Field Replacement Pitfalls

The STAIH1A is a TC input module—installation mistakes are usually about wiring and TC type selection.

TC Type—Program It Correctly. Each input must be programmed for the correct TC type. One site in Texas programmed a K-type input for a J-type TC—the temperature was off by 20 °C.

Polarity—TCs are Polarity-Sensitive. The positive and negative leads must be connected correctly. One site in Ohio reversed the leads—the temperature read negative.

Cold-Junction Compensation—The Sensor is Onboard. The cold-junction compensation sensor is on the terminal block. If you have a heat source near the terminal block, the CJC will be off. Keep the terminal block at ambient temperature.

Extension Wires—Use the Correct TC Extension Wire. Use TC extension wire (not copper) between the TC and the module. One site in Pennsylvania used copper wire—the reading was off by 5 °C.

ESD. The TC input circuits are sensitive. Strap up.
