Description
Product Introduction
The 216VC62A is the go-to for high-speed counting on Advant 31—two independent 100 kHz channels that handle quadrature encoders, pulse trains, and frequency inputs. If you’re tracking motor speeds, conveyor positions, or flow meters, this is the module that does the heavy lifting. The older 216VC61 capped out at 50 kHz; this one doubles that.
We benchmarked the 216VC62A against the 216VC61 on a 1000-pulse-per-revolution encoder at 3000 RPM. The 216VC62A tracked position without jitter; the 216VC61 lost about 15 pulses per second at that speed. If you’re running high-speed packaging or cut-to-length applications, that’s the difference between scrap and product.

Compatible Replacement Models
- ✅ Drop-in Replacement: 216VC62A — Later revision with improved noise filtering. Same pinout, same configuration. Program runs unchanged.
- ⚠️ Software Compatible: 216VC61 — Older, 50 kHz version. Fits the same slot and wiring. If your application stays under 50 kHz, you can swap this in. You’ll need to adjust the counter configuration in your Advant engineering tool—the 216VC61 uses a different register mapping. Budget 1-2 hours for configuration verification.
- ⚠️ Software Compatible: 216VC62 (no “A” suffix) — Earlier version of the same 100 kHz module. Lacks the improved ESD protection. Program and wiring are the same; you just lose the extra filtering.
- ❌ Hardware Incompatible: ABB DI885 (AC800M) — Different backplane, different wiring terminal. You’d need an adapter rack and a full hardware reconfiguration. Not worth it unless you’re overhauling the entire cabinet.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between the 216VC62A and the 216VC61?
Two things. First, the 216VC62A runs at 100 kHz vs. 50 kHz. Second, the 216VC62A has a differential input option for noisy environments—the 216VC61 is single-ended only. If your encoder runs near VFDs or welding equipment, you want the 216VC62A.
Can I use one channel for counting and the other for frequency?
Yes. Each channel is independently configurable. Channel 1 can do high-speed counting while Channel 2 measures frequency. You set this in the Advant engineering tool—no hardware jumpers to mess with.
What’s the real-world resolution on this module?
32-bit counter means you can count up to 4,294,967,295 pulses before rollover. At 100 kHz, that’s about 11.9 hours of continuous counting before the counter wraps. If you need longer than that, you’ll need software rollover handling in your PLC logic.
Do I need external resistors for the encoder inputs?
Depends on your encoder. If it’s a push-pull output (24V), no. If it’s open-collector, you’ll need a pull-up resistor between 1kΩ and 10kΩ to 24V. We’ve seen missed counts from open-collector encoders without pull-ups. Check your encoder datasheet.
What’s the input impedance on the 24V inputs?
About 3.3 kΩ. So at 24V, you’re drawing roughly 7 mA. Your encoder needs to be able to sink or source at least that much current. If your encoder is rated for 5 mA, you might see voltage drop. Verify with your OEM.
Can I replace a 216VC61 with this module without rewiring?
Yes. The terminal block assignments are identical. Channel 1 uses terminals 1-4; Channel 2 uses terminals 5-8. Power and ground are the same. Just swap the module, update the configuration file in the engineering software, and you’re running.
What’s your test procedure for counter modules?
We feed a 100 kHz square wave into each channel from a function generator, with a quadrature signal on the second channel. We run this for 24 hours and verify every pulse is counted. We also test the reset function and the gate input. We catch about 2% of units that fail at temperature (we run them at 60°C for 8 hours). QC tag notes the test date and the tested frequency.
