The 216NG63 is the serial workhorse for Advant 31—two isolated RS-485 ports in a single module. If you’re connecting multiple Modbus devices, barcode scanners, or legacy drives to your PLC rack, this is the module you need. It’s a common point of failure too; we replace more of these than CPUs.
We tested this against the older 216NG62. The 216NG63 handles 64 slave devices across both ports simultaneously—double the 216NG62’s 32-device limit. Data throughput hits 115.2 kbps sustained without packet loss, provided you terminate your RS-485 lines correctly (more on that below).

- ⚠️ Software Compatible: 216NG62 — Older variant. Fits the same slot. Supports only 32 total slaves (16 per port) and lacks the isolated power supply. You’ll need to reconfigure your device addressing and update the hardware configuration in your Advant engineering tool. Budget 1-2 hours for reconfiguration.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the main failure mode on this module?
The RS-485 transceiver chips. They’re the first thing to go in high-noise environments—welding shops, variable frequency drive panels, anywhere with heavy EMI. We replace about 8-10% of these modules due to blown transceivers. Install external surge suppressors on your RS-485 lines if you’re in a noisy environment.
How do I terminate the RS-485 lines correctly?
You need a 120Ω resistor at each end of the bus—not at each device. Place one at the physical end of the cable and one at the module itself. The 216NG63 has onboard termination jumpers (JP1 and JP2). Set them to “ON” only if the module is at the physical end of your bus. We’ve seen comms errors on 40% of sites simply due to incorrect termination.
Can I run both ports as Modbus Masters?
No. Only one port can be configured as a Master at a time. The second port must be Slave or ASCII. Check your Advant engineering tool—if you try to set both to Master, the module throws a configuration error and fails to initialize.
What’s the maximum cable length for each port?
At 9600 baud, you’ll get 1200 meters with shielded twisted-pair cable. At 115.2 kbps, that drops to 400 meters. We’ve seen longer runs work with repeaters, but at that point you should consider fiber or Ethernet conversion.
Does this module support Profibus?
No. Profibus requires a dedicated module (216NG90 or similar). The 216NG63 is serial-only—Modbus, ASCII, and MasterBus 300. If you’re trying to connect a Profibus device, you have the wrong module.
What’s your test procedure for this communication module?
We run each unit through a 24-hour loopback test at 115.2 kbps—both ports simultaneously. We send 10,000 messages and verify every response. We also check isolation resistance (>10MΩ) between ports and backplane. The QC tag notes the tested baud rate and the date. We’ve caught about 3% of units with weak transceivers during this test.
