Description

Product Introduction

The IS200SPROH2ADD is the most rugged speed protection module in the Mark VIe line—four speed inputs, 3-out-of-4 voting, cold-rated components, and enhanced ESD protection for outdoor installations. If your turbine needs the highest level of overspeed protection redundancy and your cabinet sits in a freezing yard, this is the module that keeps the turbine safe when the temperature drops.

The “ADD” suffix means GE combined the high-density “H2” design with the extended-temperature “AA” components and enhanced ESD protection. The four input amplifiers are cold-rated parts that maintain accuracy at –40 °C. The relays have cold-rated coil drivers that pull in at 4.5 V. The voting logic FPGA is temperature-stable. The board has the full conformal coating and TVS diodes on the inputs for ESD protection up to 8 kV.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)

The SPROH2ADD gets the full thermal chamber treatment plus ESD testing—our 34-point inspection verifies speed accuracy, voting logic, relay response, analog output accuracy, and ESD protection at –40 °C and +70 °C.

Incoming Verification. OEM packing slip matched to GE’s serial database. We log the serial and photograph the anti-static bag before cutting. The holographic GE label gets a UV check. The PCB edge must read “–SPROH2ADD” clearly.

Visual Inspection. Magnifying lamp, full board scan. Conformal coating must be continuous. The cold-rated amplifiers, TVS diodes, and relays are visually confirmed. The 96-pin backplane connector shows zero wear.

Live Functional Test. Mark VIe test rack with a programmable pulse generator (0.5 Hz–10 kHz), magnetic pickup simulator, load bank, ESD simulator, and Tenney chamber.

  • Cold soak (4 hours at –40 °C): Speed input accuracy—60 Hz—within 0.02%. Voting logic—3-out-of-4 test. Relay response—<5 ms. Analog output—4 mA, 12 mA, 20 mA—within ±0.30%.
  • Hot soak (4 hours at +70 °C): Same tests—all specs must hold.
  • ESD test: Apply 8 kV contact discharge to each input—verify no damage, no false trips.
  • Magnetic pickup sensitivity at –40 °C: Simulate 140 mV, 150 mV, 160 mV—verify threshold holds.
  • Trip setpoint accuracy at extremes: Program trip at 60 Hz—apply 59.9 Hz (no trip), 60.1 Hz (trip)—verify accuracy.
  • Overspeed latch test: Trip—verify relays latch until manual reset.
  • Isolation test: 2,500 V RMS—no breakdown.
  • Thermal cycle: 3 cycles from –40 to +70 °C.
  • 24-hour soak at 50 °C.

Electrical Parameters. Insulation resistance: 500 VDC via Megger MIT420, >20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.

Firmware Verification. Read the FPGA firmware via ToolboxST—verify the checksum.

Final QC & Packaging. The QC report includes speed accuracy at extremes, voting logic, relay response, analog output accuracy, ESD test results, magnetic pickup sensitivity, isolation test, thermal cycle log, and a photo.

Field Replacement Pitfalls

The SPROH2ADD handles temperature extremes, but installation mistakes are the same as the standard version.

Voting Logic—3-out-of-4 is Fixed. The SPROH2ADD has fixed 3-out-of-4 voting. If you have only three sensors, you must disable the fourth input. One site in Alaska installed a SPROH2ADD with only three sensors and didn’t disable the fourth input—the module never tripped.

Magnetic Pickup Sensitivity—150 mV Minimum. At cold temperatures, pickup output can drop. Adjust the gap or use a proximity probe.

ESD Protection—The TVS Diodes Are for Static, Not Lightning. The diodes clamp 8 kV. A lightning strike on a 500-foot cable can induce 15 kV. Install surge suppressors on long cable runs.

Manual Reset—The Latch Requires It. After an overspeed trip, the relays latch and require a manual reset.

Analog Outputs—4–20 mA Only. If you need voltage outputs, add a resistor.

Cold Temperature Input Drift—The “ADD” Holds Accuracy. The cold-rated amplifiers maintain accuracy at –40 °C. But the field pickup or transmitter might drift.

ESD. The inputs have TVS diodes, but handle the module with care. Strap up.

New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters

The SPROH2ADD has four cold-rated inputs, TVS diodes, and conformal coating—refurbishers can’t add these.

What “New Original (New Surplus)” means. This IS200SPROH2ADD came from GE’s factory with all the upgrades. We break the seal only for testing.

Refurbished risk in plain terms. A refurbisher may buy a standard SPROH2A, clean it, and sell it as an “ADD.” At –40 °C, the standard amplifiers drift and the inputs have no ESD protection. I’ve tested refurbished “ADD” units that were actually standard SPROH2As—they failed the cold soak and ESD tests. Failure rate on refurbished extended-temp high-density speed modules runs 5× higher than new.

Real cost of a refurbished failure. Speed reading is 2% low at –35 °C—the overspeed trip setpoint is 110%—the module doesn’t trip until 112% actual speed—turbine overspeeds—damage—150,000. The refurbished module saved you 1,300. The failure cost you 115× that.

What we provide as proof. For every IS200SPROH2ADD we ship: a photo of the OEM packing slip, serial traceability to GE’s records, a full test report that includes speed accuracy at –40 °C and +70 °C on all four inputs, voting logic, relay response, analog output accuracy, ESD test results, isolation test, thermal cycle log, and a sealed anti-static bag.

Pricing context. Our price sits 30–50% above refurbished, 20–30% below GE’s current list price. The delta covers our sourcing, our extended-temperature high-density speed testing, and a 12-month warranty.
