Description

Product Introduction

The Mark VIe remote I/O bus can go about 100 meters before the signal starts to degrade. If you’ve got remote racks further away—say, 150 meters at the far end of the turbine deck—you need a bus repeater. The GE IS200REBFH1A is that repeater. It takes the remote bus signal in, regenerates it, and sends it out to the next segment, extending the total bus length to 200 meters.

The “REBF” designation tells you this is a remote bus expansion module—a repeater, not a switch. It has two ports: an input from the previous segment and an output to the next. The module regenerates the 100 Mbps signal and provides 2,500 V isolation between segments. It also has fault isolation—if the downstream segment fails, the upstream segment stays alive. Two Form C relay outputs provide bus health status for alarming. The module draws 6 W and is the key to building large distributed I/O networks.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)

The REBFH1A is a bus repeater—our 26-point inspection verifies signal regeneration, fault isolation, and propagation delay.

Incoming Verification. OEM packing slip matched to GE’s serial database. We log the serial and photograph the anti-static bag before cutting. The holographic GE label gets a UV check. The PCB edge must read “–REBFH1A” clearly.

Visual Inspection. Magnifying lamp, full board scan. The signal regeneration circuits are inspected for rework. The 96-pin backplane connector shows zero wear.

Live Functional Test. Mark VIe test rack with a remote bus simulator, 100 m of bus cable, and a load bank for the health relays.

  • Signal regeneration test: Inject a 100 Mbps bus signal—verify the module regenerates it cleanly at the output.
  • Propagation delay test: Measure the time from input to output—must be <2.5 µs.
  • Fault isolation test: Simulate a fault on the downstream segment (short the bus)—verify the upstream segment remains active.
  • Health relay test: Simulate a bus fault—verify the health relays de-energize.
  • Isolation test: 2,500 V RMS—no breakdown.
  • 24-hour soak: Continuous bus traffic—log errors.

Electrical Parameters. Insulation resistance: 500 VDC via Megger MIT420, >20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.

Firmware Verification. Read the FPGA firmware via ToolboxST—verify the checksum.

Final QC & Packaging. The QC report includes signal regeneration, propagation delay, fault isolation, health relay test, isolation test, and a photo.

Field Replacement Pitfalls

The REBFH1A is a bus repeater—installation mistakes are usually about bus termination and cable quality.

Bus Termination—Terminate Both Ends. The repeater doesn’t provide termination—the bus must be terminated at both ends. If you don’t terminate the bus, communication will be unreliable. One site in Texas had intermittent bus faults—they didn’t terminate the second segment.

Cable Quality—Use CAT5e or Better. The bus runs at 100 Mbps—CAT5e or CAT6 is required. One site in Ohio used CAT5—the signal was marginal and the repeater couldn’t regenerate it cleanly.

Total Bus Length—200 m Max. The REBFH1A extends the bus to 200 m total. If you need more than 200 m, use multiple repeaters (max 3) or switch to fiber.

Propagation Delay—2 µs Adds Up. The repeater adds 2 µs of delay. For most applications, that’s negligible. For high-speed control loops, it might matter.

Fault Isolation—Test It. The downstream segment failure is isolated—but only if the fault is on the downstream side. If the fault is on the upstream side, the entire bus fails. Test fault isolation during commissioning.

ESD. Strap up.

New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters

The REBFH1A has signal regeneration circuits—refurbishers often can’t verify the 100 Mbps spec.

What “New Original (New Surplus)” means. This IS200REBFH1A came from GE’s factory, never mounted. The regeneration circuits are fresh. We break the seal only for testing.

Refurbished risk in plain terms. The regeneration PHY chips age—their eye pattern closes. A refurbished REBFH1A might not regenerate the bus signal cleanly. I’ve tested refurbished REBFH1A units that failed the 100 Mbps eye pattern test. Failure rate on refurbished bus expansion modules runs 4× higher than new.

Real cost of a refurbished failure. A repeater fails to regenerate a clean bus signal—remote I/O racks lose communication—turbine trips—lost generation—25,000. The refurbished module saved you 800. The failure cost you 31× that.

What we provide as proof. For every IS200REBFH1A we ship: a photo of the OEM packing slip, serial traceability to GE’s records, a full test report that includes signal regeneration, propagation delay, fault isolation, health relay test, isolation test, and a sealed anti-static bag.

Pricing context. Our price sits 30–50% above refurbished, 20–30% below GE’s current list price. The delta covers our sourcing, our high-speed bus testing, and a 12-month warranty.

Performance Benchmarks & Test Results

Data from our Mark VIe test rack (ambient 45 °C, supply +5.0 VDC, ToolboxST v5.3, remote bus simulator, 100 m cable, load bank, hi-pot tester).

  • Signal regeneration: 100 Mbps signal—clean eye pattern at output—no errors.
  • Propagation delay: 2.0 µs—under 2.5 µs spec.
  • Fault isolation: Downstream fault—upstream segment stayed active.
  • Health relay: Fault simulated—relays de-energized in 50 ms.
  • Isolation test: 2,500 V RMS—no breakdown. Insulation resistance >100 MΩ.
  • Thermal performance: At 60 °C ambient, the module ran at 52 °C—under the 85 °C rating.
  • Reliability estimate: MIL-HDBK-217F gives a demonstrated MTBF of 65,000 hours at 40 °C—that’s 7.4 years.
