Description
Product Introduction
The previous LRPA ran hot. The fan was loud. The efficiency was 88% — 50 W of heat. The new G1A runs at 94% efficiency — 25 W of heat. The fan is silent (25 dBA at full load). The power supply runs cool. The operators don’t complain about noise. The cabinets stay within temperature spec. The G1A is the upgrade everyone wanted.
The DS200LRPAG1A is the high-efficiency primary power supply for Mark V racks. It accepts universal AC input (85-264 V, no selector switch) and outputs +5 V at 25 A, +15 V at 8 A, -15 V at 6 A, and 24 V at 10 A — higher current than the original G1. The board has active power factor correction (PFC, >0.99), 94% efficiency, and a silent fan (fluid dynamic bearing, 25 dBA). The G1A mounts in slot 0.
What makes the G1A different from the G1? Higher output currents. Universal input (no switch). Higher efficiency (94% vs 88%). Silent fan (25 dBA vs 45 dBA). The G1A also has better hold-up time (25 ms) and wider operating temperature (-25 °C to +60 °C). For new systems or upgrades, the G1A is the superior choice.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
High-efficiency testing requires power analyzer to measure input/output.
Incoming Verification: OEM packing slip. Visual inspection: AC input connector (IEC C14), fan (60 mm, fluid dynamic bearing — spins silently), capacitors (Japanese brand, long-life). No voltage selector switch (universal input).
Efficiency Test (Full Load, 4 Hours): Apply 120 V AC. Loads: +5 V @ 25 A, +15 V @ 8 A, -15 V @ 6 A, 24 V @ 10 A (575 W total). Measure input power via power analyzer. Efficiency must be >93.5% (spec: 94%). At 240 V AC, >94.5%.
Load Test (All Outputs, Full Load, 8 Hours): Same loads, 8 hours at 40 °C ambient. Monitor output voltages. Ripple <spec.
Thermal Test (60 °C Ambient, Derated 10%): Derate outputs to 90% (22.5 A on +5 V, etc.). Run for 4 hours at 60 °C. Fan must run at 100% (inaudible over ambient). Internal temperature must stay <85 °C.
Hold-Up Time Test: Remove AC input at full load. Measure time before +5 V drops below 4.75 V. Must be >23 ms (spec: 25 ms). At 120 V AC, 26 ms.
Fan Noise Test (Anechoic Chamber): Measure fan noise at 1 meter. At 10% load: 18 dBA (inaudible). At 100% load: 24 dBA (spec: 25 dBA). Silent.
Universal Input Test (85 V and 264 V): Apply 85 V AC (low line) and 264 V AC (high line). Output must remain in regulation. At 85 V, efficiency 92% (acceptable).
Communication Test (I/O Bus): Read status — voltages, temperature, fan speed, efficiency. All values must be within spec.
Field reliability note (from our RMAd board tracking): We sold 45 units of DS200LRPAG1A over 24 months. One field failure — lightning strike on AC input (MOV sacrificed itself, board protected — replaced MOV, board still working). 2.2% failure rate (non-catastrophic).
Field Replacement Pitfalls
Get these five right and you’ll cut rework time by 90%. The G1A is efficient but has specific installation requirements.
Fan — Fluid Dynamic Bearing (Do Not Oil)
The G1A’s fan has a fluid dynamic bearing (sealed, no oil ports). One site tried to oil the fan (noise). The oil damaged the bearing. The fan seized. Replace the fan (GE# 336A6300P2). Do not oil. The fan is sealed for life (50,000 hours, 5.7 years).
No Voltage Selector — Universal Input (85-264 V)
The G1A has no voltage selector switch (universal input). One site assumed it was 120 V only and connected 240 V. The board worked fine (universal). But they used the wrong plug (NEMA 5-15 vs C13). The C13 connector fits, but the voltage is fine. Universal input means no switch needed.
Load Derating Above 50 °C — 10% per 5 °C
Above 50 °C ambient, derate 10% per 5 °C. At 60 °C, output is 90% (22.5 A on +5 V). One site had a rack drawing 24 A at 55 °C. The board derated to 92%? Actually 92% of 25 A = 23 A. Not enough. The board current-limited. The controller reset. Reduce load or add cooling.
Hold-Up Time — 25 ms, Still Not for Long Sags
The G1A holds up for 25 ms (1.5 cycles at 60 Hz). One site had a power sag lasting 50 ms (3 cycles). The +5 V dropped. The controller rebooted. Use a UPS for longer sags. The G1A is better than G1 (20 ms) but still not a UPS.
Mounting — Slot 0 Only, But Keying Changed
The G1A fits only in slot 0 (same as G1). The backplane connector keying is slightly different (the G1A has an extra key). One site tried to install a G1A in a G1 backplane (older rack). The board didn’t fit (keying mismatch). The G1A requires a newer backplane (revision H or later). Check your backplane revision before ordering.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
The G1A’s high-efficiency design uses advanced components. Refurbished boards may have counterfeit parts.
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means on this model:
GE manufactured the LRPAG1A until 2023. Our stock comes from a drive OEM’s overstock — original GE cartons, boards never powered. The fan has zero hours. The high-efficiency MOSFETs are genuine.
Refurbished risk in plain terms:
One refurbished G1A we tested had a counterfeit fan (loud, 40 dBA at full load). The seller replaced the original fan with a cheap unit. Another refurbished board had 90% efficiency (spec: 94%) — counterfeit MOSFETs with higher resistance.
Real cost of a refurbished failure:
A counterfeit fan fails after 6 months (bearing noise, then seizure). The board overheats. The rack shuts down. Downtime: 5,000-10,000 per hour. A refurbished G1A sells for 300-500 online. Our new surplus price is 800. The difference is 300-500. One hour of downtime pays for the delta.
What we provide as proof:
- Original GE carton
- Efficiency test (>93.5% at full load)
- Fan noise test (<25 dBA at 1 meter)
- Full load test (8 hours, 575 W)
- Hold-up time test (>23 ms)
- Universal input test (85 V, 264 V)
- 12-month warranty
Our price sits roughly 35% below GE’s last list price ($1,250) and about 60% above typical refurbished listings. The delta pays for efficiency verification, genuine fan, and component authenticity.
