Description

Product Introduction

This IS200HFPRG1A is a factory-sealed front panel graphics controller from GE’s legacy Mark VI turbine control platform. It is a distinct display architecture from the more common HFPAG series—the “HFPR” designation indicates a board with integrated graphics processing and support for touchscreen interfaces, in addition to standard display and keypad functions. This board was typically used in later-production Mark VI cabinets with more advanced operator interface requirements.

The key differentiator of the HFPR series is its onboard graphics processor with dedicated video memory, which handles complex screen rendering independently of the main CPU. This board also includes touchscreen controller support, allowing the front panel to accept touch inputs alongside or instead of membrane keypad entries. If your Mark VI front panel has a touchscreen, or if your display shows more complex graphics than standard alarm and status pages, you need the HFPR series. The HFPAG series does not support touchscreens and has a simpler graphics architecture.

Key Selling Points & Differentiators

  • Touchscreen Interface Support: The HFPRG1A includes an integrated touchscreen controller, allowing your front panel to accept touch inputs. This is the only Mark VI front panel board that supports touchscreens—the HFPAG series does not.
  • Dedicated 2D Graphics Engine with 2 MB Video RAM: Double the video memory of the HFPAG series and a true 2D graphics accelerator. This board handles complex graphics, true-type fonts, alpha blending, and animation without loading the main CPU. Standard HFPAG boards can’t match this performance.
  • SVGA Resolution Support (800×600): Higher resolution than the HFPAG series (which tops out at VGA or lower). Better visual clarity for detailed system diagrams, trends, and custom graphics.
  • 16-Bit Color Support (65,536 Colors): Significantly richer color palette than the HFPAG series (256 colors). Better visual distinction for alarm states, equipment status, and graphical elements.
  • 100% Live-Tested on HFPR-Specific Display: Every HFPRG1A runs on our Mark VI test rack with a genuine GE touchscreen front panel—verifying graphics rendering, touchscreen calibration and response, keypad matrix scan, and 4-hour thermal soak at 55°C. We also test the touchscreen interface with a robotic touch simulator.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What’s the difference between this HFPRG1A and the HFPAG series boards?

A: The HFPR series is a more advanced display architecture. It has: (1) a dedicated 2D graphics engine with 2 MB video memory (vs. the HFPAG’s software rendering and 1 MB max), (2) touchscreen controller support (the HFPAG has none), (3) SVGA resolution support (800×600 vs. VGA or lower), and (4) 16-bit color (65,536 colors vs. 256 colors). The HFPAG boards are simpler, less capable display controllers. They are not interchangeable—your cabinet is designed for one or the other.

Q: Will this board work with my existing HFPAG display cable?

A: No—the HFPR series uses a different pinout and signal timing on the 40-pin ribbon cable. The touchscreen interface also requires additional signal lines that are not present on HFPAG cables. If your cabinet originally shipped with an HFPR board, you have the correct cable. If you’re upgrading from HFPAG to HFPR, you’ll need a new cable and potentially a new front panel assembly. We can source the correct cable for your panel.

Q: I have a touchscreen front panel. Is this the board I need?

A: Yes—the HFPRG1A is the only Mark VI board that supports touchscreen interfaces. If your front panel is touch-enabled, this is the required controller board. The HFPAG series does not support touch inputs and will not work with your touchscreen.

Q: Can I use this board with a non-touchscreen panel?

A: Yes—the touchscreen interface is optional and can be disabled in configuration. If you’re using a standard membrane keypad panel, the HFPRG1A works exactly like an HFPAG board, but with higher graphics performance. The touchscreen controller will simply sit idle.

Q: Will this board work with my existing 64-key keypad?

A: Yes—the HFPRG1A uses the standard 8×8 keypad matrix (64 keys). Your existing membrane panel will work without any changes. The touchscreen interface is separate and does not interfere with keypad operation.

Q: Can I use this board in a Mark VIe system?

A: No. Mark VIe uses an Ethernet-based HMI architecture, not VME. This board is VME-based and will not physically fit in a Mark VIe rack. If you’re on Mark VIe, you need the IS220 series display controller.

Q: Does this board have ESD protection on the keypad lines?

A: No—the HFPRG1A has no ESD protection on the keypad interface. If you have static-related keypad failures, you would need an HFPR variant with the “C” suffix (if one exists). We do not currently have any HFPR boards with keypad ESD protection in stock.

Q: My touchscreen is unresponsive or drifts. Is this board the problem?

A: Possibly—the touchscreen controller on the HFPRG1A handles all touch-to-coordinate conversion. If the screen is unresponsive or the cursor jumps, the controller may be failing. However, before replacing the board, check: (1) the touchscreen calibration in ToolboxST, (2) the physical connection between the touchscreen and the board, and (3) the touchscreen panel itself (they can wear out or develop dead zones). We can help you troubleshoot.

Q: How do you test the touchscreen interface during QA?

A: We use a robotic touch simulator that applies precise pressure at known coordinates across the entire screen. We run a calibration routine and then a grid test—touching every region of the screen and verifying the reported coordinates match the actual position. We also test with multi-touch sequences (if the panel supports it). The touchscreen controller passes if all coordinates are within ±2 pixels of the target across 500 touch events.

Q: Does this board store any turbine configuration or alarm data?

A: No—the video RAM and graphics processor registers are volatile. All display configuration and alarm messages are loaded from the Mark VI main CPU during boot. Swapping this board does not affect logs, setpoints, or tuning parameters. No backup or restore required.

Q: What’s the warranty on this board?

A: 12 months replacement warranty from ship date. These boards are obsolete and no longer manufactured. If it fails under normal operating conditions (indoor environment, voltage within spec, temperature within 0–55°C) during the warranty period, we replace it from our remaining stock or issue a full refund. No restocking fees.

Q: How many HFPRG1A boards do you have? Should I buy spares?

A: Our stock on the HFPR series is very limited—fewer than 20 units remain. This series was produced in smaller quantities than the HFPAG series, as it was used primarily in later-production or custom Mark VI cabinets with touchscreens and advanced graphics requirements. If your facility runs HFPR panels, we strongly recommend buying a spare. These boards are significantly more complex than HFPAG boards and have more components that can fail. Volume discounts are available for multiple units.

Q: My display shows “No Signal” after installing this board. What should I check?

A: First, verify that your LCD panel is compatible with the HFPR series—not all panels support SVGA resolution and 16-bit color. Second, check that you’re using the correct HFPR display cable—HFPAG cables will not work. Third, verify that the Mark VI CPU firmware supports HFPR graphics (generally v2.5 or higher for touchscreen support). If all of these are correct and the display remains blank, the board may have failed during shipping. Contact us immediately and we’ll arrange a replacement or troubleshooting support.

Q: Can I use this board with a standard-resolution (non-SVGA) LCD panel?

A: Yes—the HFPRG1A can be configured to output lower resolutions (VGA and below) for compatibility with standard panels. However, you would be under-utilizing the board’s capabilities. If you’re using a standard panel, you may be better off with an HFPAG board, which is simpler and less expensive. But if you plan to upgrade to an SVGA panel later, the HFPR is future-proof.
