Description
Product Introduction
Large motors with multiple temperature points need a lot of RTD inputs. A 10,000 HP motor might have 18 winding RTDs and 6 bearing RTDs—24 RTDs total. The 531X191RTBAFG1 gives you 24 RTD inputs and 12 analog inputs in a single board.
The AFG1 is the high-channel RTD input board for the 1910 platform. It replaced the AEG2, which had 16 RTD and 8 analog inputs. GE added 8 more RTD and 4 more analog inputs, keeping the same 16-bit resolution and 2,500 V isolation. I’ve used the AFG1 on a 10,000 HP compressor—the board monitored all 24 temperature points in a single slot.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AFG1 boards were produced from 2012 through 2015. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have a precision ADC (Analog Devices AD7691) with the ADI logo. Visual inspection: we check the RTD terminal blocks for bent pins. Accessories: we inventory the calibration plug and the 24 jumper shunts.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1910 drive simulator with a Fluke 712 RTD calibrator and a Keysight 34465A multimeter. Power-up: 5 V DC from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2 flashes during scanning; D3 stays off.
RTD test: we inject 0 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C into each RTD input—the reading must be within 0.2 °C. Analog test: we inject 0–10 V—the reading must be within 0.5%. Open-circuit test: we open one RTD connection—the reading goes to -100 °C within 1 second. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V for 1 minute—no breakdown.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.
Firmware Verification
We read the firmware version—the AFG1 runs firmware v2.06 or later.
Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Calibration certificate included. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date, firmware version, and inspector ID.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. RTD Wiring—3-Wire Only
The AFG1 supports Pt100 RTDs in 3-wire configuration. ❗ Use 3-wire RTDs.
2. Excitation Current—Self-Heating
The 1 mA excitation current heats the RTD element. At 1 mA, self-heating is about 0.1 °C.
3. Power Dissipation—High Current Draw
The AFG1 draws 1.1 A at 5 V. Check the rack’s power supply capacity.
4. Ground Loops—Single-Point Grounding
The RTD inputs are grounded at the sensor end. Don’t ground the shield at the board end.
5. Sampling Rate—1 Hz
The AFG1 samples at 1 Hz—fine for temperature.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2015 production. The ADC is factory-tested. The RTD inputs have zero hours.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The RTD excitation current sources drift with age—a refurbished board might have 0.3 °C error. The ADC’s reference drifts—we measured a refurbished board with a 0.2 °C offset.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A 10,000 HP compressor’s winding RTD is read 3 °C low—the winding overheats and fails. Cost: 80,000. The refurbished AFG1 cost 1,400; the new surplus board costs 1,700. Pay the 300.

Performance Benchmarks & Test Results
All tests run on a GE 1910 drive simulator, ambient 25 °C ±1 °C, 5.00 V DC logic supply, firmware v2.06.
| Test Condition | Measured Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| RTD accuracy (100 °C) | ±0.15 °C | |
| RTD accuracy (200 °C) | ±0.25 °C | |
| Analog input accuracy (10 V) | ±0.4% | |
| Lead resistance cancellation (10 Ω) | 0.05 °C error | |
| Sampling rate | 1.0 Hz | |
| 5 V current draw | 1.05 A at 5.00 V | |
| MTBF | 38,000 hours | Derates to 19,000 hours at 55 °C |
Field reality: The AFG1 is a high-channel RTD input board—24 RTD inputs, 12 analog inputs, 16-bit resolution, and 2,500 V isolation. We’ve used it on 10,000 HP compressors and large motors. The 24 RTD inputs are enough for the largest motors. The AFG1 is a reliable high-channel RTD temperature monitoring board for large motors.
