Product Introduction
Large 1860 drives with dozens of I/O boards need high-capacity control power. The 531X186CPSAFG1 delivers it—24 V at 10 A, 5 V at 15 A, and ±15 V at 3 A—enough for the largest configurations.
The AFG1 is the high-capacity control power supply for the 1860 platform. It replaced the AHG1, which had 5 A on 24 V and 8 A on 5 V. GE doubled the current ratings, added a more efficient power stage, and kept the same 1,500 V isolation. I’ve used the AFG1 on a 10,000 HP compressor with a full rack of I/O boards—the board powered the entire system without breaking a sweat.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AFG1 boards were produced from 2012 through 2015. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have the high-capacity power supply ICs with the GE logo. Visual inspection: we check the input terminal block for arc marks. The input fuse must be intact. Accessories: we inventory the DC output header plug and the input terminal cover.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1860 drive simulator with a 120 V AC source and resistive load banks. Power-up: 120 V AC from a variac. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2–D4 light as the outputs stabilize; D5 stays off.
Output test: we load each output to its rated current and measure the voltage—24 V ±0.5 V, 5 V ±0.25 V, +15 V ±0.5 V, -15 V ±0.5 V. Regulation test: we step-load each output and measure the regulation—must be within ±2%. Thermal test: we run all outputs at full load for 4 hours in a 50 °C chamber—the supply must not trip. Isolation test: we apply 1,500 V for 1 minute—no breakdown.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 1,500 V megger—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω. Efficiency: we measure input power vs. output power—must be >85%.
Firmware Verification
No firmware.
Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date and inspector ID.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. Input Voltage—120 V AC Only
The AFG1 is rated for 120 V AC ±10%. ❗ Measure the input voltage before connection.
2. Input Current—10 A Maximum
The AFG1 draws up to 10 A at full load. Use 14 AWG wiring and a 15 A circuit breaker.
3. Output Loading—Don’t Exceed Ratings
The AFG1 has current limits: 10 A on 24 V, 15 A on 5 V, 3 A on ±15 V.
4. Cooling—Keep It Cool
The AFG1 dissipates about 40 W at full load. Add a fan in sealed cabinets.
5. Grounding—Use the Common Return
The outputs share a common return. Don’t tie the returns together at different points.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2015 production. The high-capacity power supply ICs are fresh. The input fuse is factory-new.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The power supply capacitors age—a refurbished board might have reduced output voltage under load. The high-current traces might be damaged—we measured a refurbished board with a 0.1 Ω trace resistance.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A 10,000 HP compressor loses control power—the drive trips, and the process stops. Cost: 50,000. The refurbished AFG1 cost 1,200; the new surplus board costs 1,500. Pay the 300.
