Product Introduction

Large drives often need custom logic—interlocks, sequences, alarms—that the drive’s standard logic can’t handle. The 531X179PLKAJG1 gives you that custom logic. It’s a PLC on a board—programmable ladder and function block logic that interfaces directly with the 1790 drive.

The AJG1 is the PLC link board for the 1790 platform—the large AC drives for pumps, fans, and compressors. It replaced the AIG1, which had 4 AI, 4 AO, and 8 DI/DO. GE doubled the I/O count, added programmable logic, and included Modbus TCP communication. I’ve used the AJG1 on a 6,000 HP compressor where the drive needed custom interlock logic—the board handled the interlocks, alarms, and sequencing, eliminating the need for a separate PLC.

Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AJG1 boards were produced from 2010 through 2014. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have the programmable logic processor (a custom GE part) with the GE logo. Visual inspection: we check the terminal blocks for bent pins. The RJ45 connector must be free of corrosion. Accessories: we inventory the RS-485 terminal plug and the Ethernet cable.

Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1790 drive simulator with a PLC simulator, a Fluke 789 process calibrator, and a Keysight 34465A multimeter. Power-up: 5 V and 24 V supplies from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2 flashes during logic execution; D3 comes on for Ethernet link; D4 stays off.

Field Replacement Pitfalls

1. Program Backup—Save Before Removal
The AJG1’s program is stored in flash memory. Before you remove the old board, save the program to a PC via Modbus TCP. The new board has no program—it needs to be downloaded. ❗ We saw a site where a tech replaced the board and lost the custom logic—the interlocks failed, and the drive tripped.

2. Ethernet IP Address—Set Correctly
The AJG1’s Ethernet IP address is set via software. If the IP is wrong, the board won’t communicate. Check the IP address.

3. Analog Output Mode—0–10 V or 4–20 mA
The AJG1’s outputs are software-selectable. Set the output mode to match the load.

4. Digital Input Polarity—Sourcing vs. Sinking
The digital inputs are sourcing—they require a +24 V signal to turn on. If your PLC outputs are sinking, use an interposing relay.

5. Ground Loops—Single-Point Grounding
The analog inputs are single-ended. Use single-point grounding.
