Product Introduction
You don’t always need 4 analog inputs and 2 encoder inputs. Sometimes you just need a speed setpoint—one analog signal from the PLC. The 531X175SSBAEM1 gives you that—1 analog input, 1 analog output—at a lower cost.
The AEM1 is the economy speed reference board for the 1750 platform. It replaced the ABM1, which had 2 AI, 1 AO, and an encoder input. GE stripped the encoder and one analog input to reduce cost. I’ve used the AEM1 on a 1,500 HP fan drive—the board took a single 4–20 mA setpoint from the DCS and fed it to the regulator.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AEM1 boards were produced from 2010 through 2014. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have a precision ADC (Analog Devices AD7091) with the ADI logo. Visual inspection: we check the terminal blocks for bent pins. Accessories: we inventory the calibration plug.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1750 drive simulator with a Fluke 789 process calibrator and a Keysight 34465A multimeter. Power-up: 5 V and 24 V supplies from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2 flashes during setpoint activity.
Analog input test: we inject 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 V (and 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 mA)—the reading must be within 0.5%. Analog output test: we command 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 V—must be within 0.5%. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V for 1 minute—no breakdown.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.
Firmware Verification
We read the firmware version—the AEM1 runs firmware v2.03 or later.
Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date, firmware version, and inspector ID.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. Analog Input Mode—0–10 V or 4–20 mA
The AEM1’s input is software-selectable. Set the mode to match the sensor. ❗
2. Analog Output Range—0–10 V Only
The output is 0–10 V only—no 4–20 mA. Use an external converter if needed.
3. Setpoint Scaling—Match the Regulator
Check the scaling to avoid speed errors.
4. Ground Loops—Single-Point Grounding
Use single-point grounding for the analog input.
5. No Encoder Input—Use Tachometer Instead
The AEM1 has no encoder input. If you need speed feedback, use a tachometer connected to the drive’s regulator.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2014 production. The ADC is fresh. The output has zero hours.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The ADC’s reference drifts with age—a refurbished board might have a 0.3% offset. The output amplifier degrades with age.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A fan drive’s speed setpoint is off—the fan runs too slow and the process overheats. Cost: 10,000. The refurbished AEM1 cost 400; the new surplus board costs 550. Pay the 150.

Field reality: The AEM1 is an economy speed reference board—1 AI, 1 AO, and 2,500 V isolation. We’ve used it on fan and pump drives where a single setpoint is all you need. It’s a simple, reliable board—but it has no encoder input. The AEM1 is a reliable economy speed reference board for basic applications.
