Product Introduction
Not every application needs 4 analog inputs and 2 encoders. Some drives just need one setpoint and one feedback. The 531X175SSBABM1 gives you that—2 analog inputs, 1 analog output, and 1 encoder input—in a compact, cost-effective board.
The ABM1 is the basic speed reference board for the 1750 platform. It replaced the AAM1, which had 1 AI and no encoder input. GE added a second AI, an analog output, and an encoder input. I’ve used the ABM1 on a 2,000 HP pump drive—the board took a single 4–20 mA setpoint from the PLC and fed it to the regulator. The encoder input provided speed feedback from the motor.

Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—ABM1 boards were produced from 2010 through 2014. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have a precision ADC (Analog Devices AD7091) with the ADI logo. Visual inspection: we check the terminal blocks for bent pins. The 9-pin D-sub connector must be free of corrosion. Accessories: we inventory the 9-pin D-sub hood and the calibration plug.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1750 drive simulator with a Fluke 789 process calibrator, a pulse generator (Agilent 33220A), and a Keysight 34465A multimeter. Power-up: 5 V and 24 V supplies from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2 flashes during encoder activity; D3 flashes during setpoint activity.
Analog input test: we inject 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 V (and 4, 8, 12, 16, 20 mA)—the reading must be within 0.5%. Analog output test: we command 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 V—must be within 0.5%. Encoder test: we feed 100 kHz and 200 kHz differential encoder signals—the counter must track the frequency. Speed loop test: we set a speed setpoint and verify the board drives the regulator. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V for 1 minute—no breakdown.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.
Firmware Verification
We read the firmware version—the ABM1 runs firmware v2.04 or later.
Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date, firmware version, and inspector ID.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. Encoder Supply—Don’t Overload
The ABM1 provides 5 V at 0.5 A for the encoder. ❗
2. Analog Input Mode—0–10 V or 4–20 mA
Set the mode to match the sensor.
3. Analog Output Range—0–10 V Only
The output is 0–10 V only—no 4–20 mA. Use an external converter if needed.
4. Encoder Cable Shield—Ground at One End
Ground the shield at the drive end only.
5. Setpoint Scaling—Match the Regulator
Check the scaling to avoid speed errors.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2014 production. The ADC is fresh. The encoder interface IC is factory-new.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The encoder interface IC degrades with ESD events. The analog outputs drift with age.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A pump drive’s speed setpoint is off—the pump runs too fast and cavitates. Cost: 15,000. The refurbished ABM1 cost 600; the new surplus board costs 800. Pay the 200.

Field reality: The ABM1 is a basic speed reference board—2 AI, 1 AO, 1 encoder input, and 2,500 V isolation. We’ve used it on pump and fan drives where a single setpoint is enough. It’s a simple, reliable board—but the outputs are 0–10 V only. The ABM1 is a reliable basic speed reference board.
