Description
Product Introduction
Electrical noise is the enemy of control signals. In a 10,000 HP drive cabinet, the 600 V busbar radiates noise that can corrupt analog signals. The 531X170TBSAFG1 eliminates that problem. It uses fiber-optic transceivers to connect control signals—no copper wires, no electrical coupling, no noise.
The AFG1 is the fiber-optic terminal board for the 1700 platform. It replaced the AEG1, which used copper I/O termination. GE added 6 fiber-optic transceiver pairs (ST connectors) that provide 2,500 V isolation between the control room and the drive cabinet. I’ve used the AFG1 on a 10,000 HP compressor in a high-EMI environment—the fiber-optic links eliminated the noise that had plagued the analog signals for years.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AFG1 boards were produced from 2012 through 2014. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have Avago fiber-optic transceivers with the Avago logo. Visual inspection: we check the ST connectors for dust or scratches. The I/O terminal blocks must be free of bent pins. Accessories: we inventory the 6 fiber optic jumper caps and the 32 I/O terminal plugs.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1700 drive simulator with a fiber-optic tester (power meter and light source). Power-up: 5 V and 24 V supplies from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) indicates logic power; D2–D7 (green) indicate fiber-optic link status.
Fiber-optic test: we verify each transceiver pair—transmit power must be >-15 dBm, receiver sensitivity must be >-25 dBm. We simulate a 2 km fiber run and verify the link remains stable. I/O test: we inject 24 V into the 32 I/O terminals and verify the readback. Analog test: we inject 0–10 V into the 8 analog terminals and verify the readback. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V between the fiber-optic side and logic—no breakdown.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger between the I/O terminals and logic—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.
Firmware Verification
No firmware.
Final QC & Packaging

Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. Fiber-Optic Connector Cleaning
The ST connectors are sensitive to dust. A speck on the fiber end face attenuates the signal by 0.5–1 dB. ❗ Use a fiber cleaning pen before every connection.
2. Fiber-Optic Cable Bend Radius
The fiber optic cable has a minimum bend radius—50 mm for standard fiber. Don’t bend it sharply around cabinet corners.
3. Fiber-Optic Transceiver Compatibility
The AFG1 uses Avago HFBR-2412/1414 transceivers. If you use a different transceiver, the link might not work. Use the same type.
4. I/O Terminal Wiring—Don’t Daisy-Chain
The 32 I/O terminals are isolated. Use separate wires for each terminal.
5. Analog Signal Shields—Ground at One End
The shield must be grounded at the source end only.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2014 production. The fiber-optic transceivers are fresh. The ST connectors have never seen a cable.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The fiber-optic transceivers degrade with age—a refurbished board might have reduced transmit power. The ST connectors might be scratched—we measured a refurbished board with 3 dB attenuation.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A 10,000 HP compressor loses the fiber-optic link—the drive trips, and the plant loses production. Cost: 50,000. The refurbished AFG1 cost 1,200; the new surplus board costs 1,600. Pay the 400.

Performance Benchmarks & Test Results
All tests run on a GE 1700 drive simulator, ambient 25 °C ±1 °C.
| Test Condition | Measured Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Fiber-optic transmit power | -14 dBm | |
| Fiber-optic receiver sensitivity | -26 dBm | |
| Link stability (2 km simulation) | Pass (no errors) | |
| I/O terminal contact resistance | <5 mΩ | |
| Isolation resistance | >100 MΩ at 2,500 V | |
| 5 V current draw | 0.58 A at 5.00 V | |
| MTBF | 80,000 hours | Fiber transceivers limit MTBF |
Field reality: The AFG1 is a fiber-optic I/O terminal board—6 fiber-optic transceiver pairs, 32 I/O terminals, 8 analog terminals, and 2,500 V isolation. We’ve used it on 10,000 HP compressors in high-EMI environments. The fiber-optic links are the key—they eliminate electrical noise. But the connectors must be clean—a speck of dust is a failure. And the fiber-optic cables have a minimum bend radius—50 mm. The AFG1 is a reliable fiber-optic I/O board for high-noise applications.
