Product Introduction

Flow loops respond quickly. Pressure transients happen in milliseconds. Standard current loop boards have 10 ms settling times—too slow for fast process control. The 531X140CCHASM2 gives you 1 ms settling time, capturing rapid changes in flow, pressure, and other fast process variables.

The ASM2 revision replaced the ASM1, which had 0.2% accuracy and 5 ms settling time. GE upgraded the accuracy to 0.1% and reduced the settling time to 1 ms. I’ve used the ASM2 on a high-speed filling line where the flow rate changed every 50 ms—the board tracked the flow changes perfectly, and the fill weights were accurate.

Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—ASM2 boards were produced from 2011 through 2015. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have a fast-settling ADC (Analog Devices AD7091) with the ADI logo. Visual inspection: we examine the terminal blocks for bent pins. Accessories: we inventory the calibration plug and the 4 jumper shunts.

Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1400 drive simulator with a Fluke 789 process calibrator, a Keysight 34465A multimeter, and a function generator (Agilent 33220A). Power-up: 5 V and 24 V supplies from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) indicates logic power; D2 (yellow) indicates loop power active; D3 (red) indicates an open loop fault.

Speed test: we step the input from 4 to 20 mA and measure the time to 0.1% of final value—must be under 1.2 ms. Accuracy test: we inject 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 mA—the reading must be within 0.1%. Output speed test: we command a step from 4 to 20 mA and measure the settling time. Loop power test: we verify the 24 V loop power. Isolation test: we apply 1,500 V between channels and verify no breakdown.

Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger between the current loop side and logic—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.

Firmware Verification
The ASM2 runs firmware v2.06 or later.

Final QC & Packaging

Field Replacement Pitfalls

1. Loop Power—Don’t Overload
The ASM2 provides 24 V loop power at 50 mA per channel. Check the transmitter’s power consumption before installation. ❗

2. Output Load—500 Ω Max
The ASM2’s outputs can drive up to 500 Ω. Use a high-impedance load.

3. Ground Loops—Isolation Matters
The ASM2 has 1,500 V isolation between channels. Use this isolation to break ground loops.

4. Burden Resistor—250 Ω
The ASM2’s current input has a 250 Ω burden resistor. If the input is connected to a powered loop, the voltage drop must be accounted for.

5. Open Loop Detection—Check the Wiring
The ASM2 detects open loops and sets the reading to 3.8 mA. Tighten the terminal screws.

 

New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters

What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original. The ADC is fresh. The isolation is factory-tested.

Refurbished risk in plain terms
The isolation degrades with age—a refurbished ASM2 might have reduced isolation. The settling time could increase—we measured a refurbished board with 1.5 ms settling time.

Real cost of a refurbished failure
A high-speed filling line’s flow control is off because the ASM2’s settling time has increased—the fill weights are inconsistent. Cost: 10,000 in scrap. The refurbished ASM2 cost 700; the new surplus board costs 950. Pay the 250.
