Product Introduction
The 1400 drive platform is GE’s process-oriented drive family—temperature, pressure, flow, level. The 531X140CCHAMM2 is the interface between those 4–20 mA process signals and the drive’s internal 0–10 V control loops. It provides two isolated inputs and two isolated outputs, with loop power for field devices.
The AMM2 revision improved over the AMM1 in two ways: accuracy (0.1% vs. 0.2%) and isolation (1,500 V vs. 1,000 V). I’ve used the AMM2 on a 600 HP pump station where we had 4–20 mA pressure transmitters feeding back to the drive for closed-loop pump control. The board’s 0.1% accuracy held the pressure within 0.2 PSI.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AMM2 boards were produced from 2010 through 2014. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have a precision ADC (Analog Devices AD7091) with the ADI logo. Visual inspection: we examine the terminal blocks for bent pins. Accessories: we inventory the calibration plug and the 4 jumper shunts.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1400 drive simulator with a Fluke 789 process calibrator and a Keysight 34465A multimeter. Power-up: 5 V and 24 V supplies from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) indicates logic power; D2 (yellow) indicates loop power active; D3 (red) indicates an open loop fault.
Input test: we inject 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 mA into each input channel—the reading must be within 0.1% of the injected value. Output test: the drive commands 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 mA; the multimeter measures the values. Loop power test: we verify the 24 V loop power at each channel. Isolation test: we apply 1,500 V between channels and verify no breakdown.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger between the current loop side and logic—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω.
Firmware Verification
The AMM2 runs firmware v2.04 or later. We read the version via the calibration port.
Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of anti-static foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. Loop Power—Don’t Overload
The AMM2 provides 24 V loop power at 50 mA per channel. If you connect a 4–20 mA transmitter that draws more than 50 mA, the loop power drops out. ❗ Check the transmitter’s power consumption before installation.
2. Burden Resistor—250 Ω
The AMM2’s current input has a 250 Ω burden resistor. If the input is connected to a powered loop, the burden resistor creates a 5 V drop at 20 mA—acceptable. But if the loop is connected to an external power supply, the voltage drop must be accounted for.
3. Output Load—500 Ω Max
The AMM2’s 4–20 mA outputs can drive up to 500 Ω. If you connect a 1 kΩ load, the output saturates at 10 mA. Use a load resistor between 250 Ω and 500 Ω.
4. Ground Loops—Isolation Matters
The AMM2 has 1,500 V isolation between channels. Use this isolation to break ground loops. We saw a site where both channels were connected to the same grounded sensor—the isolation was defeated, and the reading was noisy.
5. Open Loop Detection—Check the Wiring
The AMM2 detects open loops and sets the reading to 3.8 mA. We saw a site where a loose connection caused intermittent faults. Tighten the terminal screws.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original. The ADC is fresh. The isolation is factory-tested.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The isolation degrades with age—a refurbished AMM2 might have reduced isolation. The burden resistors drift—we measured a refurbished board with a 0.2% gain error.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A pump station’s pressure reading is off by 0.2%—the pump runs too fast, and the pipe bursts. Cost: 8,000. The refurbished AMM2 cost 600; the new surplus board costs 800. Pay the 200.

Field reality: The AMM2 is a reliable, accurate current loop interface—0.1% accuracy, 1,500 V isolation. We’ve used it on pump stations, compressors, and process plants. The loop power is a bonus—it simplifies field wiring. But the 500 Ω output load limit is a constraint—use a high-impedance load or a buffer amplifier. The AMM2 is a solid board for process applications.
