A single Ethernet port is a single point of failure—if that cable breaks or the switch goes down, your turbine disappears from the network. The DS3800NSWA solves that with two isolated Ethernet ports, giving you redundant network connections for your Mark VIe turbine control. You can connect to two separate networks or switches, or use one port for a DCS link and the other for a data historian.

What you get is the same 1500V magnetic isolation and signal integrity as the single-port NSQE, but in a two-port package. The board has two independent RJ-45 connectors, each with its own isolation transformer and impedance matching. A utility with a critical peaking plant uses the NSWA to connect their Mark VIe to two separate network switches—if one switch fails or a cable is damaged, the turbine stays visible to the control room.

What is the maximum cable length?
100 meters (328 feet) per port for Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 cable. Use shielded cable in industrial environments to reduce EMI. The two ports are independent—you can have one cable 100m long and the other 50m long.

Does the NSWA support network redundancy protocols?
The board provides the physical layer—the redundancy is handled by the Ethernet communication module. The NSWA supports dual-homed configurations (two separate network interfaces) and can work with network redundancy protocols like PRP (Parallel Redundancy Protocol) if the module supports them.

Can I connect both ports to the same switch?
Yes, but for true redundancy, connect each port to a different switch. If both ports go to the same switch and the switch fails, both links fail. For maximum reliability, connect to separate switches or separate network segments.

What’s the most common field issue?
Using the wrong cable or terminating it poorly. The NSWA requires Cat5 or better cable. Make sure the cable shield is properly grounded if you’re using shielded cable. Also, remember that the 100-meter limit is total—if you add a patch panel, the total run including all patch cables must be under 100 meters. Finally, for redundant connections, make sure each port is on a separate network segment—if both are on the same subnet and you’re using the same gateway, you may have routing issues.
