What’s the difference between the NSQE and a standard Ethernet jack?
Isolation and signal integrity. The NSQE has 1500V magnetic isolation that protects the Mark VIe from surges and ground loops on the Ethernet cable. It also provides proper 100Ω impedance matching for the Ethernet cable, which a simple jack doesn’t guarantee. The board ensures the Ethernet signal meets the IEEE 802.3 standard.

What Ethernet speed does the NSQE support?
10/100Base-TX, auto-negotiating. The board will connect at either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps, depending on the network device it’s connected to. The actual throughput is determined by the Ethernet communication module and the I/O module’s processing power.

What protocol does the NSQE support?
The board itself doesn’t care about protocols—it’s a passive termination board that provides the physical interface. The protocol (Modbus TCP, PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, etc.) is handled by the Ethernet communication module that plugs into the 50-pin header. The board just passes the electrical signals.

What’s the maximum cable length?
100 meters (328 feet) for Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 cable. Use shielded cable in industrial environments to reduce EMI. The 100-meter limit is due to the Ethernet standard, not the board itself—the 1500V isolation doesn’t extend the distance.

Does the NSQE support fiber optic Ethernet?
No, the NSQE is for copper Ethernet (10/100Base-TX) only. If you need fiber optic Ethernet, you’ll need a media converter—the NSQE provides the copper RJ-45 interface, and an external media converter can convert to fiber. GE does not have a fiber termination board for Ethernet in the Mark VIe system.

Can I hot-swap the NSQE?
No. Power down the rack before swapping.

What do the LED indicators show?
Green: link is active and the cable is connected. Yellow: the link is running at 100 Mbps (off = 10 Mbps). Some versions also have a flashing LED for activity.

What’s your test procedure?
Our inbound test:

• Visual: inspect RJ-45 connector, transformer, and 50-pin header for damage.
• Isolation: 1500V DC between the Ethernet port and the module side—must exceed 10MΩ.
• Communication test: connect to a network switch and verify link at 10/100 Mbps.
• LED test: verify LEDs illuminate correctly.

We reject about 3% of inbound NSQE boards—mostly for damaged RJ-45 connectors or failed isolation transformers.

What’s the most common field issue?
Using the wrong cable. The NSQE requires Cat5 or better cable. Using old, damaged, or poorly terminated cable will cause link drops and communication errors. Also, make sure the cable shield is properly grounded if you’re using shielded cable—the NSQE’s RJ-45 connector is shielded, and the shield should connect to the cabinet ground. Finally, remember that the 1500V isolation protects the Mark VIe, not the network device at the other end—if you’re in a lightning-prone area, consider adding an external surge protector on the Ethernet cable.
