What’s the maximum distance?

What’s the difference between multimode and single-mode fiber?
Multimode fiber (62.5/125µm or 50/125µm) is cheaper and uses shorter-wavelength transceivers (850nm/1300nm). Single-mode fiber has a smaller core (9/125µm) and uses longer-wavelength transceivers (1310nm/1550nm) for much longer distances (10-40km). The NSFC uses multimode transceivers—it’s not compatible with single-mode fiber.

Can I use the 1J1G with 50/125µm fiber?
Yes, and you’ll get better range (up to 5km) because 50/125µm fiber has lower attenuation. The board’s optical transceivers work with both 50/125µm and 62.5/125µm fiber.

What’s the most common field issue?
Dirty fiber connectors. The 1J1G’s ruggedization doesn’t protect against dirt. Clean ST connectors with a fiber optic cleaning pen before each connection. Also, remember that the 1J1G’s extended temperature range doesn’t apply to the fiber cable—use fiber cable rated for your environment. Finally, check your fiber bends—a tight bend can cause signal loss, which reduces the effective range. For 62.5/125µm fiber, the minimum bend radius is 25mm.
