2km of fiber distance isn’t always enough—not when your turbine control room is a mile away from the plant DCS. The DS3800NSFC1J1 extends the range of GE’s fiber optic termination board to 4km, using higher-power optical transceivers and lower-loss fiber interfaces. The “1J1” designation indicates the extended-range variant—same two-channel fiber optic termination, but with a longer reach.

What you get is a board that can span a plant site without repeaters or media converters. The 4km range covers most industrial installations—from the turbine deck to the main control building, or from one substation to another. Compared to the standard NSFC (2km range), the 1J1 gives you double the distance for the same fiber type. A mining operation with a turbine generator located 3km from the control room used the 1J1 to connect their Mark VIe to the plant-wide DCS—the standard 2km board couldn’t make the distance, and external repeaters were too expensive. What fiber optic cable do I need?

What’s the most common field issue?

Also, ensure the fiber cable is not bent too tightly—the minimum bend radius for 62.5/125µm fiber is about 25mm. A tight bend can cause signal loss, reducing the effective range. Finally, check your fiber connectors to ensure they are fully seated and locked into the ST port. A partially inserted connector can cause intermittent drops.
