Description
Product Introduction (Anti-Template)
Sometimes you only need one serial connection—a single DCS link, a single flow computer, a single vibration monitor—and the rest of the board is wasted space. The DS3800NSCE is GE’s single-channel serial termination board for the Mark VIe system. It gives you one fully isolated, software-configurable serial port in a compact half-height form factor—no unused channels, no wasted cost.
What you get is the same 2500V optical isolation, the same surge protection, and the same protocol flexibility as the larger NSCC and NSCD boards, but in a single-channel package. It’s perfect for retrofit applications where you’re adding a single serial device to an existing Mark VIe rack and you don’t have room for a larger board. A municipal power plant added a new emissions monitor to their gas turbine and needed a single RS-485 connection to the Mark VIe. The NSCE fit perfectly in a spare slot—they got the isolation they needed without buying a four-channel board they’d never fully use.

Compatible Replacement Models
| Model | Compatibility | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DS3800NSCE | ✅ Drop-in Replacement | Exact match. Single-channel serial termination board. Direct swap. |
| DS3800NSCE-1 | ⚠️ Software Compatible | Older revision with 1500V isolation instead of 2500V. Labor: 1 hour to verify isolation requirements. |
| DS3800NSCD | ⚠️ Hardware Difference | Dual-channel version. If you need two channels, this board fits the same rack and connector. Labor: 1 hour to terminate second channel. |
| DS3800NSCC | ⚠️ Hardware Difference | Four-channel version. Fits the same rack and connector. Labor: 2 hours to terminate additional channels. |
| IS200ECC (Mark V) | ❌ Hardware Incompatible | Mark V communication board with different connector pinout. Not compatible. |
| Third-party serial breakout boards | ❌ Hardware Incompatible | Lack isolation and surge protection. Not a replacement. |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What’s the difference between the NSCE and the NSCD?
Channel count. The NSCE has one serial channel; the NSCD has two. They share the same isolation rating, surge protection, and form factor. The NSCE is for applications with a single serial device.
Can I use the NSCE if I later need a second serial connection?
Yes, you can swap the NSCE for an NSCD (two-channel) or NSCC (four-channel) board. They share the same mounting holes and 50-pin connector. The I/O module determines the number of channels supported—check your module’s capabilities.
What protocols does the NSCE support?
RS-232, RS-485, and RS-422—software-configurable. You set the protocol in the I/O module configuration.
What is the maximum baud rate?
115.2 kbps for RS-232, up to 1 Mbps for RS-485/RS-422.
How do I wire RS-485 on the NSCE?
Use the terminal blocks (A, B, shield). Enable the 120Ω termination resistor via jumper if this board is at the end of the RS-485 bus. Use shielded twisted-pair cable with the shield grounded at one end only.
What’s the isolation rating?
2500V optical isolation—enough to break ground loops and protect the Mark VIe system from surges.
Can I hot-swap the NSCE?
No. Power down the rack before swapping.
What do the LED indicators show?
Green: channel active. Yellow: data transmission (TX). Red: data reception (RX). Useful for quick diagnostics.
What’s your test procedure?
Our inbound test:
- Visual: inspect connectors, bent pins, and TVS diodes for damage.
- Isolation: 2500V DC between field and module sides—must exceed 10MΩ.
- Surge test: apply a 1kV surge—verify the board survives without damage.
- Communication test: loopback at 115.2 kbps.
- LED test: verify LEDs illuminate correctly.
We reject about 4% of inbound NSCE boards—mostly for damaged TVS diodes or poor solder joints.
What’s the most common field issue?
Using RS-232 cable beyond the 50-foot limit. The NSCE’s isolation protects against ground loops, but it doesn’t amplify the signal. For runs over 50 feet, use RS-485 or RS-422. Also, if you’re using RS-485, don’t forget the termination resistor at the end of the bus—without it, you’ll get signal reflections and communication errors.
