Description
Product Introduction
The DS3800NFIA1B1C is the highest-spec version of the fiber optic adapter interface board—the NFIA with extended temperature range, enhanced diagnostics, and dual-layer conformal coating with UV protection. The suffix tells the story: the first “1” indicates a hardware revision with improved signal conditioning. The “B” specifies extended temperature range components. The second “1” adds enhanced diagnostic features (link quality monitoring, signal integrity reporting). The final “C” is the environmental package: dual-layer conformal coating with UV-resistant topcoat. This board was designed for installations where the standard NFIA wasn’t sufficient—harsh environments with UV exposure, humidity, and wide temperature swings.
The board plugs into the Mark IV backplane and provides termination and signal conditioning for fiber optic links. The dual-layer conformal coating with UV protection ensures the board survives in outdoor enclosures, offshore platforms, and coastal installations. Compare this to the NFIA1B1B (same extended temperature range and diagnostics, but single-layer coating without UV protection). The 1B1C adds UV resistance and better humidity protection.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What’s the difference between the 1B1C and the 1B1B?
The final “C” adds a dual-layer conformal coating with a UV-resistant topcoat. The 1B1B has a single-layer coating without UV protection. The UV topcoat prevents the acrylic coating from yellowing or cracking after years of exposure to sunlight or fluorescent lighting with UV content. The dual-layer coating also provides better protection against humidity and salt spray. This board is specifically for harsh environments where the standard coating isn’t enough.
What’s the “Signal Quality” LED?
The Signal Quality LED indicates the integrity of the fiber optic signal passing through the adapter. The board monitors the signal-to-noise ratio and the amplitude of the incoming optical signal. If the signal quality is good, the LED is green. If it’s marginal, it turns amber. If it’s poor, it turns red. This gives you early warning of degrading fiber or connectors.
Do I need to upgrade my DMP firmware for the enhanced diagnostics?
The enhanced diagnostics require DMP firmware v3.5 or later. If you’re running an older firmware version, the board will still work, but the diagnostic features won’t be available. We can provide the firmware EPROMs for the upgrade if needed.
Will the UV topcoat degrade over time?
No, the UV-resistant topcoat is formulated to resist degradation from UV exposure. In our accelerated aging tests (1,000 hours of UV exposure), the topcoat showed no yellowing or cracking. The underlying acrylic layer remained intact.
What’s the difference between the NFIA1B1C and the NFCF?
The NFIA is an adapter/interface board—it provides termination and signal conditioning, but relies on other boards for the full communication function. The NFCF is a complete single-channel fiber optic communications board with its own transceivers and protocol handling.
Can I hot-swap this board?
No. Mark IV backplanes are not hot-swappable. Power down, lock out, wait 60 seconds.
What’s your warranty and lead time?
We stock the NFIA1B1C in limited quantities. Lead time is 1-2 business days. We offer a 1-year warranty. We test every board with a 24-hour burn-in and a diagnostic verification. The test report is included.
Is this board compatible with the Mark VIe?
No. This board is for Mark IV systems only. The backplane architecture is different.
