Description

Product Introduction

The DS3800NFDB1A1A is an enhanced version of the dual-channel fiber optic board—the NFDB with added diagnostics and improved component selection. The suffix tells the story: the first “1” indicates a hardware revision with improved receiver sensitivity. The “A” specifies the standard 850nm short-wave transceivers. The second “1” adds optical power monitoring and link quality reporting. The final “A” is the standard environmental package (no conformal coating). This board was designed for installations where two fiber links are needed and where diagnostic feedback is useful for preventive maintenance.

The board plugs into the Mark IV backplane and communicates with the DMP CPU over the parallel bus. Each of the two fiber optic channels operates at 2Mbps with an 850nm LED-based transmitter. The diagnostic features—optical power monitoring, link quality reporting, and error logging—give you early warning of fiber degradation. Compare this to the base DS3800NFDB (same dual-channel fiber optic functionality, but no diagnostics). The 1A1A gives you the same basic functionality with added visibility into link health.

Compatible Replacement Models

Model Compatibility Level Notes
DS3800NFDB ⚠️ Software Compatible Base model without diagnostics. Hardware fits, but you lose the optical power monitoring and link quality reporting.
DS3800NFCD ✅ Drop-in Replacement Dual-channel with the same diagnostics. The NFCD is the later generation—fully interchangeable with the NFDB1A1A.
DS3800NFCD1 ✅ Drop-in Replacement NFCD with minor revision. Same functionality.
DS3800NFCF ⚠️ Software Compatible Single-channel version. Only use if you only need one link. Hardware fits, but you lose one channel.
DS3800NECA ❌ Functionally Incompatible Ethernet board (coaxial). Different protocol and physical layer. Not a replacement for fiber optic links.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What’s the difference between the NFDB1A1A and the base NFDB?
The 1A1A adds optical power monitoring, link quality reporting, and error logging. The base NFDB has only basic link status LEDs. The diagnostic features give you early warning of fiber degradation—dirty connectors, splices with higher loss, or aging fiber. This allows you to schedule maintenance before the link fails.

What’s the “Optical Power Good” LED?
The board continuously monitors the received optical power on each channel and compares it to a threshold. If the power is above the threshold, the LED is green. If it drops below the threshold, the LED turns red and the board logs an error. This is a proactive warning that your fiber link is degrading.

Do I need to upgrade my DMP firmware for the diagnostics?
The optical power monitoring and link quality reporting require DMP firmware v3.0 or later. If you’re running an older firmware version (v2.x), the board will still work as a standard fiber link, but the diagnostics won’t be available. We can provide the firmware EPROMs for the upgrade if needed.

Can I use single-mode fiber with this board?
No, the NFDB1A1A uses 850nm LED transceivers designed for multimode fiber. Single-mode fiber won’t work—the LED doesn’t have enough power to couple into the smaller core. You’ll need 62.5/125µm multimode fiber with ST connectors.

Is the fiber link redundant?
The board has two channels (A and B), but they’re not redundant in the sense of failover. They’re two independent links to two different remote nodes. The Mark IV doesn’t support automatic failover on the fiber links.

What’s the protocol used on the fiber link?
GE uses a proprietary protocol that’s not compatible with standard industry protocols. The NFDB1A1A is for GE-to-GE communication only.

Can I hot-swap this board?
No. Mark IV backplanes are not hot-swappable. Power down the cabinet, lock out the breaker, and wait 60 seconds before removing or installing the board.

What’s the most common failure mode on the NFDB1A1A?
We’ve serviced about 15 of these boards. The most common failure is the LED transceiver—it degrades over time, reducing optical power output. The symptom is intermittent link drops or the Optical Power Good LED turning red. We replace the transceiver module. The edge connector is the second most common failure—corrosion from humidity. The board is repairable.

What’s your warranty and lead time?
We stock the NFDB1A1A in limited quantities. Lead time is 1-2 business days. We offer a 1-year warranty. We test every board with a 24-hour burn-in, a fiber optic loopback test, and a diagnostic verification. The test report is included.

Is this board compatible with the Mark VIe?
No. This board is for Mark IV systems only. The backplane architecture is different.
