Description

Product Introduction

The DS3800NFCG1E1B is a single-channel fiber optic communications board with a built-in optical isolator—a feature designed to protect the Mark IV backplane from electrical transients that can occur on long fiber runs. The suffix tells the story: the first “1” indicates a hardware revision. The “E” specifies 1300nm long-wave transceivers with APD receivers for extended reach. The second “1” adds enhanced diagnostics. The final “B” is the conformal coating with humidity-resistant components. This board was designed for installations where long fiber runs are necessary and where electrical isolation from the remote site is critical.

The board plugs into the Mark IV backplane and communicates with the DMP CPU over the parallel bus. The integrated optical isolator provides an additional layer of isolation—beyond the standard 2,500V DC optical isolation of the fiber transceivers—protecting the backplane from ground potential differences and transients. Compare this to the NFCF1D1D (same 8km range, APD receiver, but no optical isolator). The 1E1B gives you the same range with added isolation and conformal coating.

Compatible Replacement Models

Model Compatibility Level Notes
DS3800NFCF1D1D ⚠️ Software Compatible Same 8km range and APD receiver, but no optical isolator. If you don’t need the extra isolation, this is a cost-effective alternative.
DS3800NFCG ⚠️ Software Compatible Base model, 4km range, no APD, no coating. Only suitable for shorter links.
DS3800NFCG1E ⚠️ Software Compatible Same 8km range and isolator, but without conformal coating.
DS3800NFCG1E1 ✅ Drop-in Replacement Same board without the “B” coating. Functionally identical.
DS3800NFCD1H1D ✅ Drop-in Replacement Dual-channel version with 8km range and APD, but no optical isolator.
DS3800NECA ❌ Functionally Incompatible Ethernet board. Different protocol and physical layer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What does the integrated optical isolator do?
The integrated optical isolator is an additional isolation stage on the board, beyond the standard 2,500V DC isolation provided by the fiber optic transceivers. It uses a second optical coupler to isolate the backplane from the fiber interface, providing an additional 5,000V DC of isolation. This is useful when the Mark IV cabinet and the remote site have significantly different ground potentials, or when the fiber run is subject to lightning-induced transients.

Is the optical isolator necessary?
Only if you’re experiencing ground potential differences or transients on your fiber runs. In most power plants, the standard 2,500V DC isolation of the fiber transceivers is sufficient. The optical isolator is an additional safety margin for installations with long cable runs, outdoor fiber, or known grounding issues. We’ve seen it used in installations where the remote site is physically separated from the main control room by a large distance, or where there are potential differences between cabinets.

Can I use this board with multimode fiber?
The 1E1B is designed for single-mode fiber (9/125µm). The transceivers are optimized for single-mode coupling. You can use it with multimode fiber in a pinch, but the range will be reduced to about 3-4km. Use single-mode fiber for full performance.

Do I need to upgrade my DMP firmware for this board?
The enhanced diagnostics require DMP firmware v3.5 or later. If you’re running an older firmware version (v3.0 or earlier), the board will still work, but the diagnostics won’t be available. We can provide the firmware EPROMs for the upgrade if needed.

What’s the Isolator Status LED?
The Isolator Status LED indicates the health of the optical isolator. The isolator has its own LED and monitoring circuit. If the LED is green, the isolator is functioning properly. If it’s red, the isolator has failed or is out of specification—the board will still work (the primary fiber transceivers are still functional), but the additional isolation is lost. We recommend replacing the board if the Isolator Status LED turns red.

Can I hot-swap this board?
No. Mark IV backplanes are not hot-swappable. Power down the cabinet, lock out the breaker, and wait 60 seconds before removing or installing the board.

What’s the most common failure mode on the NFCG1E1B?
We’ve serviced a handful of these boards. The most common failure is the optical isolator—it’s an additional component that can fail. The Isolator Status LED gives you advance warning. The second most common failure is the APD bias voltage supply. The board is repairable.

What’s your warranty and lead time?
We stock the NFCG1E1B in limited quantities. Lead time is 2-3 business days. We offer a 1-year warranty. We test every board with a 24-hour burn-in, a fiber optic loopback test (with a spool of 8km fiber), and a diagnostic verification. The test report is included.

Is this board compatible with the Mark VIe?
No. This board is for Mark IV systems only. The backplane architecture is different.
