Description
Product Introduction
The DS3800NFCF1C1C is the single-channel version of the NFCD1G1H with the environmental package of the NFCD1G1C. The suffix tells the story: the first “1” indicates a hardware revision with improved receiver sensitivity. The “C” specifies 1300nm long-wave transceivers for extended reach. The second “1” adds enhanced diagnostics (optical power monitoring, link quality reporting). The final “C” is the environmental package: dual-layer conformal coating with UV-resistant topcoat. This board was designed for installations where a single fiber link needs to reach beyond 2km in harsh environments—offshore platforms, coastal power plants, or outdoor enclosures where UV exposure and humidity are concerns.
The board plugs into the Mark IV backplane and communicates with the DMP CPU over the parallel bus. The 1300nm transceivers operate at 2Mbps and support fiber runs up to 5km on 62.5/125µm multimode fiber. Compare this to the NFCF1C1B (same range, diagnostics, but single-layer coating without UV protection). The 1C1C gives you the same performance with significantly better environmental protection. If you’re ordering for a harsh environment, this is the board you want.

|---|---|---|
| DS3800NFCF1C1B | ✅ Drop-in Replacement | Same 1300nm range and diagnostics. The “B” has single-layer coating without UV protection. In a climate-controlled indoor environment, the 1C1B is functionally identical and less expensive. |
| DS3800NFCF1C | ⚠️ Software Compatible | Same 1300nm range, but lacks the conformal coating. Only suitable for clean, dry environments. |
| DS3800NFCF (base) | ⚠️ Software Compatible | 850nm, 2km range. Only use if your link is under 2km. |
| DS3800NFCF1 | ⚠️ Software Compatible | 850nm, 2km range, with diagnostics and coating. If you don’t need the extended range. |
| DS3800NFCD1G1C | ✅ Drop-in Replacement | Dual-channel version with the same range and coating. You can use the NFCD with only one channel connected. |
| DS3800NFCD1G1H | ✅ Drop-in Replacement | Dual-channel version with the same range, but single-layer coating. |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What’s the difference between the 1C1C and the 1C1B?
The final “C” adds a dual-layer conformal coating with a UV-resistant topcoat. The 1C1B has a single-layer coating without UV protection. The UV topcoat prevents the acrylic coating from yellowing or cracking after years of exposure to sunlight or fluorescent lighting with UV content. The dual-layer coating also provides better protection against humidity and salt spray—we’ve measured about 30% better moisture barrier performance in our testing. This board is specifically for harsh environments where the standard coating isn’t enough.
Will the UV topcoat degrade over time?
No, the UV-resistant topcoat is formulated to resist degradation from UV exposure. GE designed it specifically for outdoor applications. In our accelerated aging tests (1,000 hours of UV exposure), the topcoat showed no yellowing or cracking. The underlying acrylic layer remained intact. The white LED on the board is a UV exposure sensor—if it illuminates, the board has been exposed to excessive UV levels. We don’t see this triggered in normal operation.
Do I need to upgrade my DMP firmware for this board?
The enhanced diagnostics (optical power monitoring, link quality reporting, error logging) require DMP firmware v3.5 or later. If you’re running an older firmware version (v3.0 or earlier), the board will still work, but the diagnostics won’t be available. We can provide the firmware EPROMs for the upgrade if needed.
Can I use this board with single-mode fiber?
The 1C1C is designed for multimode fiber (62.5/125µm) with ST connectors. The transceivers are LED-based and aren’t powerful enough to couple efficiently into single-mode fiber. You can use it with single-mode fiber in a pinch, but the range will be reduced to about 2-3km. Use the correct multimode fiber for optimal performance.
What’s the diagnostic “Optical Power Good” LED?
The board continuously monitors the received optical power. If the power is above -25dBm, the LED is green. If it drops below -25dBm, the LED turns red and the board logs an error. This is a proactive warning that your fiber link is degrading—a dirty connector, a splice with higher loss, or aging fiber. Use this to schedule maintenance before the link fails.
Can I hot-swap this board?
No. Mark IV backplanes are not hot-swappable. Power down, lock out, wait 60 seconds before removing or installing.
What’s the most common failure mode on the NFCF1C1C?
We’ve serviced fewer than 10 of these boards. The most common failure is the 1300nm LED transceiver—it can degrade over time, especially at high temperatures. The symptom is reduced optical power output, showing up as the Optical Power Good LED turning red. We replace the transceiver module. The edge connector is the second most common failure—corrosion from humidity. We clean it with a fiberglass brush and isopropyl alcohol. The board is repairable.
What’s your warranty and lead time?
We stock the NFCF1C1C in limited quantities. Lead time is 2-3 business days. We offer a 1-year warranty. We test every board with a 24-hour burn-in, a fiber optic loopback test with a spool of 5km fiber, and a diagnostic verification. The test report is included.
Is this board compatible with the Mark VIe?
No. This board is for Mark IV systems only. The backplane architecture is different.
