Description
Product Introduction
The DS3800NEPF is the entry-level expansion processor for the Mark V—the board that GE shipped in standard configurations before the performance upgrades arrived. The “F” suffix indicates the base 25MHz processor with 512KB of dual-port RAM and the basic math library (floating-point, trigonometric, logarithmic functions). This is the board that came in most Mark V cabinets from the factory—the workhorse that’s been running turbines for decades. It’s not fast, it’s not fancy—but it works, and it’s what your system was probably designed around.
The board plugs into the expansion header on the Mark V CPU (the DS3800DMM series) and offloads math tasks. The 25MHz clock is a quarter of the speed of the later 66MHz prototypes, and the 512KB RAM is a fraction of the 4MB found on the premium boards. Compare this to the DS3800NEPB1B1B (40MHz, 1MB RAM) or the DS3800NEPB1C1C (50MHz, 1MB RAM). The NEPF is the slowest, least-capable Mark V expansion processor—but it’s also the most common, the most available, and the cheapest. If your system was designed around a 25MHz board, upgrading to a faster variant won’t improve performance without firmware changes and control loop re-tuning. The NEPF is the board you replace like-for-like when the original fails.

Compatible Replacement Models
| Model | Compatibility Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DS3800NEPD (base) | ✅ Drop-in Replacement | Same 25MHz processor and 512KB RAM. GE renamed the product line—the NEPD is the same board as the NEPF. The NEPF is an older part number. If you have a NEPF, any base NEPD will work. |
| DS3800NEPB (base) | ✅ Drop-in Replacement | Same 25MHz processor and 512KB RAM. Another GE renaming. The NEPB base model is the same board. |
| DS3800NEPD1 | ✅ Drop-in Replacement | 25MHz, 1MB RAM (double). Hardware fits. The extra RAM gives you more buffer space for FFTs and larger matrices. No firmware changes needed. |
| DS3800NEPD1B | ⚠️ Software Compatible | 40MHz processor, 1MB RAM. This will physically fit, but the DMM firmware may not support the faster bus timing. If your firmware is v3.0 or later, the board will work. If it’s v2.x, the board will downclock to 25MHz—you won’t get the speed advantage. Check your firmware version before ordering. |
| DS3800NEPD1C | ⚠️ Software Compatible | 50MHz processor, 1MB RAM. Requires DMM firmware v3.0 or later. If you upgrade the board without upgrading firmware, the board will downclock and the extra speed will be wasted. |
| DS3800NEPA series (any) | ❌ Hardware Incompatible | Mark IV boards. Different backplane timing. Will damage the board or backplane. Do not attempt. |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What’s the difference between the NEPF and the NEPD?
GE rebranded the board line—the NEPF is an older part number for the same base 25MHz board. The NEPD name replaced NEPF around 1999. If you have a NEPF in your system, any base NEPD is a direct replacement. There is no functional difference. The NEPD line then evolved into the “1B,” “1C,” etc., variants with faster processors and more memory. The NEPF is the original base model, and it’s the oldest part number of the Mark V expansion processor family.
Do I need a firmware upgrade if I replace a NEPF with a NEPD?
If you’re replacing with a base NEPD (25MHz, 512KB), no firmware changes are needed. If you’re replacing with a faster variant (40MHz or 50MHz), you’ll need DMM firmware v3.0 or later. Check your firmware version from the diagnostic menu. If it’s v2.x, upgrade before installing the faster board. We can provide the EPROMs for the firmware upgrade.
What’s the typical CPU load reduction with the NEPF?
On a standard Mark V gas turbine application (12 PIDs, 16 thermocouples, basic control logic), the DMM CPU alone runs at about 60-65% load. Adding the NEPF drops that to about 50-55%—a 10-15% reduction. The reduction is smaller than the 30-35% figure quoted for the 50MHz boards because the NEPF is slower and has less memory. If your CPU load is already high (above 70%), you might want to consider upgrading to a faster board instead of replacing the NEPF with another NEPF. The faster board will give you more headroom.
Can I hot-swap this board?
No. Mark V backplanes are not hot-swappable. Pulling the NEPF with power applied can cause voltage spikes on the +5V rail. Power down the cabinet, lock out the breaker, and wait 60 seconds before removing or installing the board.
What’s the most common failure mode on the NEPF?
We’ve repaired about 40 NEPF boards over the past eight years. The most common failure is the edge connector—corrosion from humidity. The symptom is intermittent communication errors (“NEPF Timeout” messages in the log). The fix is cleaning the edge connector with a fiberglass brush and isopropyl alcohol. The second most common failure is the 25MHz oscillator crystal—it drifts out of spec and causes math errors. We replace it with a high-grade SMD crystal. The board is repairable—we’ve never had a NEPF that was completely unrepairable.
What’s your warranty and lead time?
We stock the NEPF in our Dallas and Houston warehouses. Lead time is 1-2 business days. We offer a 1-year warranty on functional defects. 30-day return window for unused boards—full refund minus shipping. We test every NEPF with a 24-hour burn-in and a math benchmark before shipping. The test report is included with your shipment.
Can I upgrade a NEPF to a faster variant?
Physically, yes—the boards are the same form factor. But you’ll need to verify your DMM firmware version first. If you’re running v3.0 or later, you can upgrade to a 40MHz or 50MHz board. If you’re running v2.x, the faster board will downclock to 25MHz and you won’t get the performance benefit. You’d need to upgrade the firmware first, then install the faster board. We can provide the EPROMs for the firmware upgrade. Call us if you’re considering this—we’ll walk you through the compatibility check and the firmware upgrade process.
Is the NEPF compatible with the newer NEPC?
The NEPC is a different architecture—50MHz, 2MB RAM, newer ASIC. It requires DMM firmware v4.0 or later. The NEPF is not compatible with the NEPC’s firmware, and the NEPC won’t fit in a system designed around a NEPF without a firmware upgrade. If you’re upgrading from a NEPF to a NEPC, you’ll need to upgrade the DMM firmware first. The NEPC also uses more current (1.8A on the +5V rail) than the NEPF (1.2A). Check your power supply before upgrading.
What’s the difference between the NEPF and the Mark IV NEPA?
The NEPF is for Mark V systems. The NEPA is for Mark IV systems. They are not interchangeable. The backplane bus timing is different. Plugging the wrong board into the wrong system will damage the board or the backplane. Look at your CPU board: DS3800DMP = Mark IV (NEPA). DS3800DMM = Mark V (NEPF/NEPD/NEPB). Verify before ordering.
