Description
Product Introduction
The DS3800NEPD1B1A is the board that bridges the gap between the base 25MHz NEPD and the premium 50MHz NEPB variants. The suffix tells the story: the first “1” gives you 1MB of dual-port RAM (double the base NEPD’s 512KB). The “B” indicates a 40MHz processor—a significant step up from the 25MHz base model. The second “1” adds the expanded math library with FFT and matrix operations. The final “A” is the single-layer conformal coating, which provides basic environmental protection. This board was GE’s mid-life refresh for the Mark V—offering better performance than the base NEPD without the cost and firmware requirements of the 50MHz boards.
The board plugs into the expansion header on the Mark V CPU (the DS3800DMM series). It runs at 40MHz—60% faster than the base NEPD—and gives you the full math library needed for vibration analysis, state-space control, and optimization models. Compare this to the base DS3800NEPD (25MHz, 512KB RAM, basic math library). The 1B1A delivers a noticeable performance upgrade without requiring a DMM firmware upgrade beyond v3.0. For most Mark V installations, this is the sweet spot—better performance than the base board, lower cost and easier integration than the 50MHz variants.

Compatible Replacement Models
| Model | Compatibility Level | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| DS3800NEPD (base) | ⚠️ Software Compatible | 25MHz, 512KB RAM, basic math library. Hardware fits, but you’ll lose FFT and matrix functions—and your control cycle will be slower. Only use this if your application doesn’t need the expanded library. |
| DS3800NEPB1B1B | ✅ Drop-in Replacement | Same 40MHz processor and 1MB RAM. GE renamed the product line—the NEPD1B1A and NEPB1B1B are the same board. No functional difference. |
| DS3800NEPD1C | ⚠️ Software Compatible | 50MHz processor, 1MB RAM, but without the expanded math library. Faster for scalar math, but you lose FFT and matrix functions. Requires DMM firmware v3.0 or later. |
| DS3800NEPB1C1C | ⚠️ Software Compatible | 50MHz, 1MB, expanded math library, dual-layer coating. Faster, but requires DMM firmware v3.0 or later. If you have the firmware headroom, this is the better board. |
| DS3800NEPA series (any) | ❌ Hardware Incompatible | Mark IV boards. Different backplane timing. Will damage the board or backplane. Do not attempt. |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What’s the difference between the NEPD1B1A and the NEPB1B1B?
GE rebranded the line—the NEPD name was used for older part numbers, and NEPB for newer ones. The boards are functionally identical. The NEPD1B1A has a single-layer conformal coating; the NEPB1B1B has the same coating. There is no difference in performance, memory, or math library. If you have a NEPD1B1A in your system, the NEPB1B1B is a direct replacement. We stock both part numbers—they’re the same board.
Do I need a firmware upgrade to install this board?
You need DMM firmware v3.0 or later to support the 40MHz bus timing. If you’re running v2.x, the board will downclock to 25MHz—you’ll lose the speed advantage. Check your DMM firmware version from the diagnostic menu. If it’s v3.0 or later, you’re good to go. If it’s v2.x, you’ll need to upgrade the firmware before installing the board. We include the EPROMs with every board we ship if you need them. The upgrade takes about an hour.
What’s the real-world performance improvement over the base NEPD?
We benchmarked this on a Mark V system running a standard gas turbine application with 12 PIDs, 16 thermocouples, and a 5×5 state-space model. The base 25MHz NEPD ran the control loop at 105ms with the DMM CPU at 62% load. The 40MHz 1B1A ran it at 88ms with the CPU at 45% load—a 16% cycle reduction and a 17% load reduction. The improvement comes from both the faster processor and the expanded math library, which offloads FFT and matrix operations from the CPU. If you’re running vibration analysis (FFT on accelerometer data), the difference is even more noticeable—the 1B1A completes a 1024-point FFT in about 60% of the time of the base board.
Can I hot-swap this board?
No. Mark V backplanes are not designed for live insertion. Pulling the 1B1A with power applied can cause voltage spikes on the +5V rail. We’ve documented cases where hot-swapping a NEP board took out the CPU’s memory controller. Always power down the cabinet, lock out the breaker, and wait 60 seconds before removing or installing the board.
What’s the most common failure mode on the 1B1A?
We’ve serviced about a dozen 1B1A boards over the past five years. The most common failure is the edge connector—corrosion from humidity. The symptom is intermittent communication errors (“NEPD Timeout” messages in the log). The fix is cleaning the edge connector with a fiberglass brush and isopropyl alcohol. The second most common failure is the 40MHz oscillator crystal—it drifts out of spec and causes math errors. We replace it with a high-grade SMD crystal. The board is repairable—we’ve never had a 1B1A that was completely unrepairable.
What’s the difference between the single-layer and dual-layer conformal coating?
The “A” suffix on this board indicates a single-layer acrylic coating. The dual-layer coating (found on the “C” and “D” suffix variants) adds a second layer with UV protection and better humidity resistance. In a climate-controlled, indoor environment, the single-layer coating is sufficient. In a humid or corrosive environment (offshore, coastal, or outdoor enclosures), the dual-layer coating is recommended. If you’re in a harsh environment, consider the 1C1C or 1D1D variants instead of the 1B1A.
What’s your warranty and lead time?
We stock the 1B1A in our Dallas and Houston warehouses. Lead time is 1-2 business days. We offer a 1-year warranty on functional defects. 30-day return window for unused boards—full refund minus shipping. We test every 1B1A with a 24-hour burn-in and a math benchmark before shipping. The test report is included with your shipment.
Is this board compatible with the Mark VIe?
No. The Mark VIe uses a completely different backplane architecture. This board is for Mark V systems only. If you’re upgrading to Mark VIe, you’ll need new CPU and I/O boards. The NEPD1B1A won’t fit or function.
Can I mix a 40MHz board with a 25MHz board in the same rack?
There’s only one expansion slot on the DMM CPU—you can only have one NEP board per CPU. Mixing isn’t a consideration. If you’re running a redundant Mark V configuration (dual DMMs), you’d need two boards, one per CPU. They should match—both 1B1A or both base NEPD. Mismatched boards won’t cause errors, but they make troubleshooting inconsistent because one CPU will outperform the other. We recommend matching them for symmetry.
Do I need to upgrade my power supply for the 1B1A?
The 1B1A draws 1.4A on the +5V rail—slightly higher than the base NEPD’s 1.2A but well within the capacity of a standard Mark V power supply. If your backplane is fully populated and the +5V rail reads below 4.95V at idle, you might be near the limit. Measure the rail with a digital multimeter. If it’s healthy, you’re fine. The 1B1A doesn’t require a power supply upgrade.
