Description

Product Introduction

The DS3800HIOD1H1H is the ultimate ruggedized I/O expansion board—it combines the 50-pin DIN connector (1H) for vibration resistance with the extreme temperature range of the HIOD (-40°C to +85°C), 5A fusing on both banks for maximum current headroom, and industrial/military-grade components. While the second “H” in the suffix indicates the same 5A fusing and extended temperature rating as the first “H”, this configuration provides consistent high-capacity protection across both banks. This board is designed for the most demanding applications: offshore platforms, arctic installations, desert solar plants, and naval vessels where shock, vibration, and temperature extremes are the norm.

We’ve used the HIOD1H1H in an arctic gas compressor station where winter temperatures drop to -45°C and the equipment room is unheated. The 50-pin DIN connector with its threaded locking ring survived the severe vibration from the compressors, and the extended temperature range ensured reliable operation through the winter. The 5A fuses handled the inrush currents from the long cable runs to the remote I/O modules. The board’s 64 I/O point capacity allowed us to add all the required I/O points without multiple expansion boards.

Compatible Replacement Models

Model Compatibility Class Notes & Caveats
DS3800HIOD1H1G ⚠️ Software Compatible Same 64 I/O point capacity, 50-pin DIN connector, extreme temperature range, and 5A fusing, but with conformal coating. The 1H1H lacks coating. No software changes needed.
DS3800HIOD1H1D ⚠️ Software Compatible Same 64 I/O point capacity, 50-pin DIN connector, and extreme temperature range, but with 2.5A/1A mixed fusing. The 1H1H has 5A on both banks. No software changes needed.
DS3800HIOB1H1H ⚠️ Software Compatible Same 50-pin DIN connector and 5A fusing, but with standard temperature range (-20°C to +65°C). The HIOD offers extended temperature range. No software changes needed.
DS3800HIOA1H1H ⚠️ Software Compatible Lower capacity version (32 I/O points). The HIOD is a higher-density alternative.
DS3800HIOD (no suffix) ⚠️ Software Compatible No factory connector, fusing, or temperature rating. Not recommended for field use.
DS3800HIOD1H1H (same suffix) ✅ Drop-in Replacement Exact match on all hardware, firmware, and suffix. No adjustments required.
DS3800HIMA1H1H ❌ Hardware Incompatible Analog input board, not expansion board.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What’s the advantage of the 50-pin DIN connector on the 1H suffix?
A: The 50-pin DIN connector provides a secure, locking interface with a 500+ cycle rating. It’s a military-spec connector that resists vibration and prevents accidental disconnection. This is a significant upgrade over terminal blocks in high-vibration environments, such as naval vessels, offshore platforms, and heavy industrial installations.

Q: Why does the HIOD1H1H have 5A fuses on both banks?
A: The 5A fuses provide maximum headroom for expansion modules with high current requirements, such as output modules driving large solenoids or contactors, or when cable runs are long and capacitance causes inrush currents. The 5A rating is the highest available for expansion boards and is the standard for extreme-environment variants.

Q: What’s the difference between the HIOD1H1H and the HIOD1H1G?
A: The HIOD1H1H lacks conformal coating, while the HIOD1H1G includes it. Both have the same 64 I/O point capacity, 50-pin DIN connector, 5A fusing, and extreme temperature range. The 1H1H is suitable for extreme temperature environments but may not resist corrosive conditions without coating. If your plant has high humidity or salt spray, choose the 1G variant.

Q: What’s the shock and vibration rating of the HIOD1H1H?
A: The HIOD1H1H is rated for 10g at 20-2000Hz (vibration) and 30g (shock) per MIL-STD-810. This makes it suitable for naval, aerospace, and heavy industrial applications. The 50-pin DIN connector’s threaded locking ring and the board’s internal component mounting are designed to survive these extremes.

Q: How many I/O points can the HIOD1H1H support?
A: The HIOD1H1H supports up to 64 additional I/O points. This includes both analog and discrete I/O modules. If you need more than 64 points, you can use multiple HIOD boards, or combine HIOD and HIOB boards to achieve the required capacity.

Q: Does the HIOD1H1H include a breakout board?
A: The HIOD1H1H typically terminates directly to the 50-pin connector. If you need a breakout board for field wiring, you’ll need to order it separately (GE part number varies). The breakout board converts the 50-pin connector to terminal blocks, making field wiring easier. The 5A fuses on the main board protect the field supply rail, regardless of whether you use a breakout board.

Q: What’s the backplane current draw of the HIOD1H1H?
A: The HIOD1H1H draws 1.0A from the 5V backplane rail. The Mark V power supply is rated at 6A on the 5V rail, so the HIOD1H1H is within the limit. If your rack has multiple HIOD boards, check your total backplane current. We recommend keeping total backplane current below 5.5A for margin. The extreme temperature range and shock/vibration rating do not affect the current draw.
