The 5 A total rating assumes cable runs under 3 meters and a 24 V supply at the UPL input. Voltage drop on long runs reduces the available power at the I/O module. For runs longer than 5 meters, derate by 10% per additional meter using 1.5 mm² cable. At 10 meters, you’re effectively limited to about 4 A total. We recommend keeping power cables as short as practical and using the recommended cable gauge (1.5 mm² minimum). The UPL does not have remote voltage sense—it regulates at its output terminals only.

Q6: Can I hot-swap I/O modules while the UPL is powered?
Yes, the UPL supports hot-swap of connected I/O modules—the output channel will reinitialize when the module is inserted. However, the ISBus communication to that module will drop during insertion and may cause a momentary fault depending on your controller configuration. For critical systems, we recommend de-energizing the specific channel via software before removal if your controller supports it. Failing that, schedule a maintenance window. The UPL itself can be hot-swapped only if the entire rack is depowered—the UPL is the power source, so removing it kills the rack.

Q7: The diagnostic data shows high current on channel 6, but the module connected to it is rated for 500 mA. What’s wrong?

  • Incorrect wiring where the module is back-feeding power from another source.
    First, check that your I/O module is not receiving power from a second supply (dual-fed). That will cause a current loop. Second, swap the module to a different channel to isolate the issue—if the high current follows the module, replace the module.
