Description
Product Introduction
The DS200PLFMG1A is a LAN communication board for GE’s Mark V DS200 series, used in Speedtronic turbine control systems. It provides Ethernet connectivity between the turbine control rack and plant DCS systems, operator workstations, or engineering laptops.
Unlike serial-based comm boards (like the DS200PLFSG1), the PLFMG1A runs at 100 Mbps and supports simultaneous connections to up to eight clients. You can read turbine data via Modbus/TCP, upload logs, or perform remote diagnostics without cycling the CPU. Firmware version must match your Mark V CPU revision—we cover that below.

Key Selling Points & Differentiators
- Dual Ethernet ports with integrated switch – Daisy-chain multiple racks without an external switch. Saves cabinet space and reduces failure points.
- Live-tested in actual Mark V rack – We run each PLFMG1A in a test rack with a known-good CPU (DS200CPCAG1A), verify Modbus/TCP register reads (40001–40050), and confirm FTP upload of trend logs.
- Firmware version logged and provided – We read and record the exact firmware revision before shipping. You can request a specific version if available—no surprises.
- QC includes 24-hour ping stress test – 50,000 packets sent at 10 ms intervals. We log any dropped packets (allowed: <0.01%). Boards exceeding that threshold are rejected.
- DIP switch inspection and documentation – We photograph your board’s DIP switch settings and include the photo. Misconfigured switches cause 60% of “dead comm boards” we see from other sellers.
- 2-year warranty – Includes functional defects, failed Ethernet port, or corrupted firmware. We provide firmware re-flash instructions before requiring return.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: I’m replacing a failed DS200PLFMG1A. Do I need to match firmware versions?
A: Yes—this is critical. The Mark V CPU firmware (on the CPCAG board) and the PLFMG1A firmware must be compatible. We’ve seen comm timeouts, random disconnects, and watchdog faults when versions are mismatched. Example: CPU v5.2 requires PLFMG1A firmware v2.0 or higher. Check your existing board’s firmware label (white sticker near the RJ45 jacks). Tell us your version before ordering.
Q: Can I use this board with a Mark VI or Mark VIe system?
A: No. The backplane pinout and voltage levels are different. The PLFMG1A runs on 5 V only. Mark VI uses 3.3 V for its comm cards. Physically, the board will not seat correctly in a Mark VI rack without forcing it—and we’ve seen customers break backplane pins trying.
Q: Does this board support Modbus/TCP as a slave (server) only, or also as a master?
A: Both. As a slave, it responds to read/write requests from a DCS or PLC. As a master, it can poll up to 16 remote Modbus/TCP devices and map their registers into Mark V internal points. You configure master/slave mode via DIP switch 8. We include a configuration table with each board.
Q: How do I update the firmware if I need to match my CPU?
A: Via FTP. Connect your laptop to the same Ethernet switch, set a static IP in the 192.168.0.x range, and FTP to the board’s IP address (default 192.168.0.101). Upload the .bin file to the /firmware directory, then cycle power. We provide the firmware files free for versions we have in stock. If you need a version we don’t have, contact GE directly—they still support Mark V firmware downloads for active service contracts.
Q: What are the most common setup mistakes?
A: Three things, in order:
- DIP switch 1 (enable/disable) set to OFF. The board won’t even power its PHY.
- Termination resistor on daisy-chain—if you’re using only one Ethernet port, leave the second port empty. Do NOT install a terminator; it’s not a serial network.
- IP address conflicts—default is 192.168.0.101. If your plant network uses 192.168.0.x, change it via the configuration EEPROM tool (we include a link to the utility).
Q: How do I know if the board is physically damaged?
A: Visually inspect the RJ45 jacks. We’ve received boards with bent pins inside the jacks from improper handling. Also check the 64-pin DIN connector for bent or missing pins. Our QC includes a magnified inspection of both. If you receive a board with visible damage, photograph it within 24 hours and contact us for immediate replacement.
Q: What ESD precautions should I take during installation?
A: The Ethernet PHY chip is sensitive—we’ve seen failures from as little as 500 V of static discharge. Use a grounded wrist strap (1 MΩ resistor) and install the board on an ESD mat. Handle the board by its edges only. Do not touch the RJ45 jacks or the DIN connector pins. If you don’t have ESD gear, ground yourself to the cabinet frame before opening the anti-static bag.
Q: Will I lose historical trend data or event logs if I replace this board?
A: No. The PLFMG1A does not store historical data. It’s a communication bridge only. All trend logs, alarm history, and event records are stored on the Mark V CPU board’s flash memory. Replacing the LAN board will not erase anything. However, you will temporarily lose network access during the swap—plan for 10–15 minutes of downtime.
