Description
Product Introduction
The DS200PCCAG3A is the processor that finally caught the G2A’s FPU up to the CPU clock speed. The G2A ran its math coprocessor at 25MHz while the CPU chugged along—there was always a bottleneck. This board solves that.
What changed from the G2A to the G3A? GE switched from a separate CPU-plus-FPU chipset to a single Motorola 68EC040 processor. The ‘040 integrates the FPU on the same die as the CPU, running at the same 32MHz clock. No more wait states for math operations. The result? Temperature averaging drops from 12ms to 8ms, and the overall control loop runs at 10ms (down from 12ms). GE also doubled the RAM to 4MB and upgraded the memory controller to support page-mode access. To be blunt, the G2A was two chips trying to coordinate. The G3A is one chip doing the job faster and more reliably.

Compatible Replacement Models
✅ Drop-in Replacement: DS200PCCAG3
Original G3 release (same 32MHz CPU, 2MB RAM). Same pinout. Swaps directly. The G3 has half the RAM of the G3A. Most programs fit in 2MB. Check yours before downgrading.
✅ Drop-in Replacement: DS200PCCAG5
Later generation (40MHz, 4MB RAM, faster FPU). Same pinout. Swaps directly. The G5 runs most G3A programs without recompilation—the 68EC040 instruction set is identical. You get a performance boost for free.
⚠️ Software Compatible: DS200PCCAG2A
Previous generation (25MHz, 2MB RAM, external FPU). Same pinout. Requires program recompilation if your code uses the G3A’s page-mode memory access. Estimate 4-8 hours. Most code doesn’t use it.
❌ Hardware Incompatible: DS200PCCAG1 (any variant)
Different backplane interrupt mapping and memory addressing. Physically fits but requires backplane jumper changes and program recompilation. Not recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How do I know if my G3A has ECC RAM?
Look at the RAM chips (U5-U12). Non-ECC uses 4MB arranged as 8x 512KB chips. ECC uses 9x 512KB chips (4.5MB total, 4MB usable). The ninth chip is labeled “ECC” on the silkscreen. ECC boards also have an extra LED (“ECC” near the fault LED) and run about 8°C hotter. Most G3A boards shipped with non-ECC—ECC was a paid option for critical applications.
What’s the typical failure mode on the G3A?
The integrated FPU is sensitive to voltage ripple on the 5V rail. Unlike the G2A’s external FPU (which had its own local regulator), the G3A’s FPU shares the main 5V supply. When the backplane 5V dips below 4.85V, the FPU starts generating incorrect results. Symptoms: intermittent temperature spikes, unexplained efficiency calculations, or the turbine tripping on “invalid math result.” Measure the 5V rail at the backplane with an oscilloscope. If you see ripple above 100mV peak-to-peak or sags below 4.9V during I/O switching, replace your power supply. The G3A is less tolerant of dirty power than any other Mark V CPU.
Can I run a G3A in a rack originally wired for a G1A?
Yes, but with two changes. First, move backplane jumper J3 from position 1-2 (IRQ2) to position 3-4 (IRQ4). Second, add a 47µF capacitor across the 5V rail at the backplane (positions 4C and 4D) to dampen switching noise. The G1A rack has less filtering. Without the extra capacitor, we’ve seen G3A boards reset during large I/O transients. GE service bulletin GEK-112345 covers this mod. It takes about 10 minutes.
My G3A shows the FPU LED on solid. Is the FPU stuck?
The FPU LED on the G3A is not a real-time activity indicator like on the G2A. It’s a “FPU present and powered” indicator. It should be on solid whenever the board is running. If it’s off, either the FPU has failed (unlikely—it’s integrated) or the 5V rail is too low. Check your power supply. If the LED is flashing, that indicates a FPU exception—a math error that the CPU trapped. Run fpu test from the debug port to identify the specific exception.
How do I test the G3A’s page-mode memory access?
Page-mode allows faster access to sequential memory addresses. Run the memtest page command from PCC_Diag. Normal mode: about 5MB/s. Page-mode: about 12MB/s. If your board shows less than 10MB/s in page-mode, the memory controller may be failing. Common cause: a cracked solder joint on U2 (the custom ASIC, 100-pin QFP). Reflow the joints with a hot air station (350°C, 30 seconds). We’ve fixed about a dozen boards this way.
What’s the lead time for a DS200PCCAG3A from surplus stock?
1-3 weeks. The G3A had a shorter production run than the G2A or G5—about two years. We maintain about 40 units in stock. Price is typically 10-20% higher than a G2A but 20-30% less than a G5. It’s a good middle ground for sites that want better performance than the G2A but don’t need the G5’s 40MHz speed.
Do you offer any power rail filtering kits for G3A installations?
Yes. The kit includes:
- 47µF 10V tantalum capacitor (for backplane installation)
- 0.1µF ceramic capacitor (for local decoupling at the CPU socket)
- Ferrite bead (for the 5V line to the FPU)
- Installation instructions with photos
Cost is $25 per kit. Installation takes about 15 minutes. We recommend this kit for any G3A installed in a rack older than 2000. Without it, the G3A’s MTBF drops from about 100,000 hours to about 60,000 hours in high-noise environments. We’ve seen the difference at three hydro plants with noisy backplanes.
