Description

Product Introduction

The DS200NATOG3ACB is the final and most capable Ethernet gateway GE ever produced for the Mark V platform. By the time this board shipped in 2009, GE had finally figured out that plant engineers needed modern security and real throughput—not the anemic 10Mbps bottleneck of the G1 series.

What did GE change from the G2A to the G3? Three substantial upgrades. First, the processor jumps from a 54MHz ColdFire to a 200MHz Freescale MPC5200 (PowerPC architecture). Second, the Ethernet PHY goes from 10/100 to gigabit capable (though backplane throughput limits you to about 200Mbps real-world). Third, and most important for security-conscious plants, the G3 adds HTTPS (TLS 1.0), SNMP v3, and 802.1x port authentication. The G2A had none of that—it was essentially a sitting duck on any network. To be blunt, if your plant cybersecurity team is asking questions about legacy devices, the G3 is the only NATO board that lets you answer with a straight face.

Compatible Replacement Models

✅ Drop-in Replacement: DS200NATOG2ACB
Previous generation with 54MHz ColdFire processor and 10/100 Ethernet. Same pinout. Swaps directly, but you lose gigabit speed, HTTPS, and SNMP v3. The G2A also lacks the G3’s hardware encryption accelerator—expect 50% CPU load for HTTPS vs 10% on the G3.

✅ Drop-in Replacement: DS200NATOG3A
Same G3 hardware without the “CB” coating. Identical firmware and pinout. The “CB” suffix indicates conformal coating (about 35µm). For clean indoor control rooms, the standard G3A works fine.

⚠️ Software Compatible: DS200NATOG3C
Late-production variant with different NAND flash vendor (Micron vs Samsung). Requires a firmware reflash to match the “B” revision’s partition table. Estimate 90 minutes. Functionally identical once flashed.

❌ Hardware Incompatible: DS200NATOG1
First-generation board uses a different backplane connector keying. The G1 has a plastic shroud that physically blocks insertion into a rack wired for G2 or G3 boards. Do not force it—you’ll break the backplane pins.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I run the G3 board at gigabit speeds?
Yes and no. The Ethernet PHY supports 1000Base-T, but the VME backplane’s peak throughput is about 200Mbps. You’ll never see true gigabit performance. However, the gigabit PHY provides better flow control and lower latency at 100Mbps than the G2’s 10/100 PHY. Think of gigabit as headroom, not bandwidth. The real advantage is full-duplex at 100Mbps without packet drops.

How do I enable HTTPS on the G3 board?
Generate a self-signed certificate or upload your plant’s CA-signed certificate via SFTP to the /certs directory. Then in the web configuration page, set “HTTPS Only” to Enabled. The board listens on port 443. Default HTTP port 80 becomes disabled. Do not enable HTTPS without testing first—we’ve seen sites lock themselves out because their browser didn’t support TLS 1.0 (modern browsers disable it by default). Use Firefox ESR with TLS 1.0 enabled, or access the board via HTTP on an isolated management network.

My G3 board shows the ERR LED flashing twice, pausing, repeating. What’s the fault?
Two flashes means “RADIUS authentication timeout.” The board is configured for 802.1x port authentication but can’t reach the RADIUS server. Check your network connectivity first. If the RADIUS server is down, the board will still allow access after a 30-second timeout (fail-open). However, repeated flash codes indicate the board is retrying every 60 seconds. Either fix the RADIUS server or disable 802.1x in the board’s configuration via the serial console (requires a serial connection to the board’s debug port—pinout available in GE manual GEK-119874).

What’s the maximum number of simultaneous Modbus/TCP connections?
The G3 supports 64 TCP connections total, of which up to 32 can be Modbus/TCP. Each connected client consumes about 2MB of RAM for connection state and buffers. With all 32 Modbus clients connected, the board’s memory sits at about 85% utilization. That’s fine for polling, but don’t add heavy file transfers via FTP at the same time—you’ll hit memory allocation failures.

Can I use the G3 board’s SFTP server for secure file transfers?
Yes, but with a warning. The SFTP implementation is OpenSSH 4.3 from 2006—known vulnerabilities exist (CVE-2016-6210, among others). Do not expose the SFTP port (22) to any untrusted network. Use it only on an isolated management VLAN. For truly secure transfers, offload data to a modern SFTP server via Modbus/TCP instead of using the board’s built-in server.

What’s the typical failure mode on the G3ACB?
The DDR RAM’s termination voltage regulator (U12, a Linear LTC3406) runs at about 70°C at full load. After about 50,000 hours, it fails shorted, sending 2.5V to the 1.8V rail. Symptoms: the board powers up with all LEDs solid, no Ethernet link, no serial console output. The regulator is a 6-pin TSOT-23, about 15 minutes with a fine-tip soldering iron. Replace with LTC3406-1.8 (fixed output). We sell them for $8 each.

How do I migrate configuration from a G2A board to a G3?
Use the NATO_Migrate utility (available on our support site). Export configuration from the G2A as an XML file. Import into the utility, which converts register mappings, alarm thresholds, and user accounts. The utility flags incompatible settings (e.g., G2A’s plain-text FTP schedule vs G3’s SFTP). Manual intervention takes about 30 minutes for a typical configuration. Without the utility, you’ll need to rebuild from scratch—expect 4-6 hours.

What’s the lead time for a DS200NATOG3ACB from surplus stock?
About 1-2 weeks. The G3 series is newer than G1 or G2, so more surplus units exist—but demand is higher because plants are replacing G1 boards for security compliance. We currently have about 40 units in stock. When those deplete, lead time extends to 3-6 weeks for refurbished units.

Do you offer any cybersecurity hardening service for the G3 board?
Yes. We provide a hardening script that disables unnecessary services (FTP, HTTP, SNMP v1/v2c), configures SNMP v3 with AES-256 encryption, sets up RADIUS authentication, and installs a plant-specific TLS certificate. Cost is $500 per board, includes remote configuration assistance and a before/after vulnerability scan. We do not guarantee compliance with any specific standard (NERC CIP, IEC 62443), but we’ll document what we changed so your compliance team can assess. Turnaround is two business days.
