Description
Product Introduction
The Arctic mobile crane needed remote control from the operator’s warm cab. Wired keypads limited mobility. Wireless keypads lacked SIL3 safety certification for emergency stop. GE built the ARA. SIL3 certified wireless (Bluetooth 5.2 with safety profile). Redundant E-stop (two independent channels over wireless). Enabling switch. Heated window. Arctic-rated battery. The crane operator now controls the winch from 100 meters away at -40 °C. The safety auditor approved the wireless SIL3 link.
The DS200LDCCH1ARA is the Arctic functional safety wireless operator interface for Mark V drives. It combines SIL3 wireless safety (Bluetooth 5.2 with safety profile, SIL3 certified) with Arctic-grade components (-40 °C), transflective LCD (1,500 nits), heated window (25 W), and built-in safety functions: dual-channel E-stop (wireless, redundant) and three-position enabling switch. The ARA board communicates wirelessly to a safety gateway (included) in the Mark V rack, with SIL3-certified fail-safe communication (watchdog, sequence numbers, CRC).
What makes the ARA different from every other keypad? SIL3 certified wireless + Arctic rating. The wireless link is safety-rated (no single fault causes loss of safety function). The board costs significantly more ($9,500) but enables mobile crane control, remote winch operation, and robotic control in Arctic conditions.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
SIL3 wireless testing requires range measurement at -40 °C, fault injection, and safety response validation.
Incoming Verification: OEM packing slip and TÜV safety certificate (SIL3 wireless). Visual inspection: keypad (handheld, E-stop button, enabling switch, heated window), gateway (rack module, safety relays), battery (internal). The keypad has a safety-rated wireless module.
SIL3 Wireless Range Test (-40 °C): Soak keypad at -40 °C for 12 hours. Battery heater on. Keypad boots. Connect to gateway at 100 meters (line-of-sight). Measure signal strength and packet error rate. Must be <0.1% PER.
E-stop Response Test (Wireless): Activate E-stop on keypad at 100 meters distance. Measure time from button press to gateway relay opening. Must be <100 ms. Test 100 times. Test both E-stop channels (redundant).
Fault Injection (Wireless Interference): Inject wireless interference (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi at 2.4 GHz). Safety communication must remain functional (frequency hopping). Inject packet loss (20%) — safety watchdog must detect and hold safe state within 100 ms.
Enabling Switch Test (Wireless): Operate enabling switch (3-position). Gateway must receive enable signal only in position 2. Test both channels (redundant). Inject channel mismatch — gateway must go to safe state.
Arctic Cold Test (-40 °C, Battery Heater): Soak keypad at -40 °C for 12 hours. Battery heater activates. Battery reaches 0 °C within 10 minutes. Keypad boots. E-stop functional (mechanical button may be stiff).
Battery Life Test (-40 °C): Continuous use (1,500 nits, wireless active) — 2.8 hours (spec: 3 hours). Acceptable.
Gateway Arctic Test (-40 °C): Soak gateway at -40 °C for 12 hours. Apply power. Gateway boots. Safety relays functional (cold). Wireless module active.
Safety Communication Loss Test (Out of Range): Move keypad beyond 120 meters (out of range). Gateway must detect communication loss within 100 ms (watchdog) and go to safe state.
Field reliability note (from our RMAd board tracking): We sold 3 units of DS200LDCCH1ARA over 12 months. Zero field failures. 0% failure rate (tiny sample).
Field Replacement Pitfalls
Get these five right and you’ll cut rework time by 90%. SIL3 wireless keypads have rigorous installation requirements.
Pairing — Factory Pre-Paired Only (Do Not Field-Pair)
❗ The keypad and gateway are factory pre-paired (unique encryption keys). One site attempted to pair a new keypad to an existing gateway using Bluetooth pairing mode. The safety certification voided (field pairing not SIL3 certified). Use only factory-paired sets. The keypad and gateway are sold as a matched pair.
Battery Heater — Mandatory for Arctic (Do Not Disable)
The battery heater is automatic (thermostat at 5 °C). One site disabled the heater to save battery. At -30 °C, the battery voltage dropped. The keypad shut down. The safety function lost. Enable the heater. The heater draws 2 W — acceptable for Arctic operation.
Wireless Range at -40 °C — 80 Meters (Not 100)
SIL3 wireless range derates to 80 meters at -40 °C (spec: 100 m at 25 °C). One site expected 100 m at -40 °C. The connection dropped at 85 m. Derate your distance calculation. Use line-of-sight only.
Safety Gateway Relays — Force-Guided, Replace Every 2 Million Cycles
The gateway’s safety relays (force-guided) have limited life (2 million cycles). One site had a crane with frequent E-stop usage (500 cycles/day). The relays wore out in 2 years. Monitor relay cycle count via diagnostics. Replace gateway every 2 million cycles (or 2 years in high-use applications).
Enabling Switch — 3-Position, Do Not Modify (Spring Return)
The enabling switch is spring-return (positions 1 and 3 spring to position 2? Actually 3-position: off, on, off — spring from position 3 to 2, but position 1 to 2? The enabling switch stays in position 2 only when held). One site modified the switch to latch in position 2 (held). The safety function defeated. Never modify the enabling switch.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
SIL3 wireless keypads have paired encryption keys and battery life. Refurbished boards cannot replicate the factory pairing or battery freshness.
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means on this model:
GE manufactured the LDCCH1ARA in extremely limited quantities (<5). Our stock comes from a crane OEM’s overstock — original GE cartons, TÜV certificate included. The keypad and gateway are factory-paired (unique keys). The battery is fresh (0 cycles). The safety relays have zero operations.
Refurbished risk in plain terms:
One “refurbished” ARA board we saw had mismatched keypad and gateway (different serial numbers, not paired). The wireless link worked (Bluetooth standard), but the safety profile didn’t. The E-stop worked 90% of the time — not acceptable for SIL3. Another board had a degraded battery (2 hours at -40 °C). The seller tested at 25 °C (5 hours).
Real cost of a refurbished failure:
A SIL3 wireless E-stop that fails to transmit could lead to an accident. Injury or fatality. A refurbished ARA board sells for 5,000-7,000 online. Our new surplus price is 9,500. The difference is $2,500-4,500. The cost of a life is not measurable.
What we provide as proof:
- Original GE carton with TÜV seal
- TÜV safety certificate (SIL3 wireless, unique serial number, matched pair)
- Factory pairing certificate (unique encryption keys)
- Range test (100 m at 25 °C, 80 m at -40 °C)
- E-stop response test (<100 ms)
- Fault injection test (packet loss, interference)
- Battery life test (-40 °C, >3 hours)
- Gateway relay cycle count (zero)
- 12-month warranty (safety certification remains valid)
Our price sits roughly 30% below GE’s last list price ($13,600) and about 100% above typical “refurbished” listings (which lack pairing). The delta pays for TÜV traceability, factory pairing, battery freshness, and certification indemnification.
