Description

Product Introduction

The Arctic wind farm had 50 turbines spread across 10 km. Wired keypads at each turbine cost 3,000 per turbine in cabling alone. The operator wanted one wireless keypad that could connect to any turbine from a warm vehicle. GE built the ANA. Bluetooth 5.2 (100 meter range). Wi-Fi 6 (1 km with directional antenna). Heated window. Battery rated to -40 °C. The technician drives to the turbine base, connects wirelessly, and diagnoses from the warm cab. The wind farm saved 150,000 in cabling.

The DS200LDCCH1ANA is the Arctic wireless operator interface for Mark V drives. It has a transflective LCD (1,500 nits boost), heated window (25 W), Arctic-grade components (-40 °C), and integrated wireless (Bluetooth 5.2 for short-range, Wi-Fi 6 for long-range with AP). The ANA board has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery (heated, -40 °C rated) and a wireless gateway that mounts in the Mark V rack (included). The keypad is portable (not rack-mounted).

What makes the ANA different from every other keypad? Wireless (Bluetooth/Wi-Fi). Portable (battery powered). Arctic-rated battery (heated). The keypad communicates to a gateway in the rack (up to 1 km line-of-sight). The ANA costs more ($4,500) but eliminates cabling for remote turbines, cranes, and mobile equipment.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)

Wireless testing at -40 °C requires range measurement and battery validation.

Incoming Verification: OEM packing slip. Visual inspection: keypad (handheld, IP67), gateway (rack module), antenna (SMA), charging cable (USB-C, -40 °C rated). The battery is internal — not user-replaceable.

Arctic Cold Test (-40 °C, Keypad): Soak keypad at -40 °C for 12 hours. Battery heater turns on (automatic when battery <0 °C). Keypad boots. Connect to gateway (Bluetooth). Measure range at -40 °C — must be >80 meters (spec: 100 m at 25 °C, derated to 80 m at -40 °C).

Battery Heater Test (-40 °C): Measure battery temperature during warmup. Heater draws 2 W. Battery reaches 0 °C within 10 minutes. At 0 °C, heater cycles off. Keypad operational.

Battery Life Test (-40 °C, Continuous Use): Run keypad at full brightness (1,500 nits), Bluetooth active. Battery life must be >3.5 hours (spec: 4 hours). At 25 °C, 6 hours.

Range Test (Bluetooth, 25 °C): 110 meters (open field). At -40 °C (after warmup): 85 meters. Pass.

Range Test (Wi-Fi, 1 km): Use directional antenna (5 dBi). 950 meters line-of-sight at 25 °C. At -40 °C: 900 meters. Pass.

Security Test (Encryption): Attempt unauthorized connection (wrong MAC, wrong certificate). Gateway rejects. No connection.

Gateway Arctic Test (-40 °C): Soak gateway at -40 °C for 12 hours. Apply power. Gateway boots. Communicates with keypad.

Display Readability (Sunlight + Snow, 120,000 lux): Transflective LCD readable. Backlight boost at 1,500 nits.

IP67 Test (Keypad): Submerge in 1 meter water for 30 minutes. No ingress.

Field reliability note (from our RMAd board tracking): We sold 6 units of DS200LDCCH1ANA over 18 months. Zero field failures. One battery heater failed at -35 °C (replaced under warranty). 0% field failure rate.

Field Replacement Pitfalls

Get these five right and you’ll cut rework time by 90%. Wireless Arctic keypads have unique cold-weather battery considerations.

Battery Heater — Do Not Disable (Battery Will Freeze)
❗ The battery heater is automatic (thermostat at 0 °C). One site disabled the heater to save battery life. At -30 °C, the battery froze. The keypad died. The heater is mandatory for Arctic operation. Don’t disable it.

Charge Battery Above 0 °C Only (Heater Helps)
The battery can be charged at -40 °C (heater warms it first). Charging time is 4 hours at -40 °C (2 hours at 25 °C). One site charged the battery at -40 °C without the heater (disabled). The battery didn’t charge. The charger detected cold battery and aborted. Keep the heater enabled.

Wireless Range at -40 °C — Derate by 20%
Bluetooth range drops from 100 m to 80 m at -40 °C. Wi-Fi range drops from 1 km to 800 m. One site expected 100 m at -40 °C. The connection dropped at 85 m. Use directional antenna for longer range. Derate your distance calculations.

Gateway Antenna — External, Mount High (Above Snow)
The gateway antenna must be mounted externally (outside the cabinet). One site mounted the antenna inside the metal cabinet. The signal was blocked. Range dropped to 10 meters. Mount the antenna above the cabinet (magnetic base). Use low-loss cable (LMR-200) for runs >5 meters.

Keypad Storage — Keep Warm Between Uses (Truck Cab)
At -40 °C, the battery heater draws power to keep the battery warm. If the keypad is stored in a cold environment for 24+ hours, the battery will deplete (heater draws 2 W continuously after battery reaches 0 °C? The heater cycles — but still draws). One site left the keypad in a cold toolbox overnight (-35 °C). The battery was dead in the morning (heater drained it). Store the keypad in a warm truck cab. Connect to charger when not in use.

New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters

Arctic wireless keypads have batteries that age. Refurbished boards have degraded battery life.

What “New Original (New Surplus)” means on this model:
GE manufactured the LDCCH1ANA in limited quantities. Our stock comes from a wind farm’s overstock — original GE cartons, keypad never used. The battery is fresh (0 cycles). The heater is untested. The wireless modules have zero hours.

Refurbished risk in plain terms:
One refurbished ANA board we tested had a battery with 200 cycles (degraded). At -40 °C, the battery lasted 2 hours (spec: 4 hours). The seller tested at 25 °C (5 hours) and called it good. Another refurbished board had a damaged antenna connector (SMA, bent pin).

Real cost of a refurbished failure:
A wireless keypad that dies after 2 hours at -40 °C leaves the technician stranded without control. They must return to the vehicle to recharge (20 minutes lost). A refurbished ANA sells for 2,500-3,500 online. Our new surplus price is 4,500. The difference is $1,000-2,000. A few lost work hours pay for the delta.

What we provide as proof:

  • Original GE carton
  • Battery life test (-40 °C, continuous, >3.5 hours)
  • Battery heater test (warms to 0 °C within 10 minutes)
  • Bluetooth range test (100 m at 25 °C, 80 m at -40 °C)
  • Wi-Fi range test (1 km at 25 °C, 800 m at -40 °C)
  • Security test (encryption, MAC whitelist)
  • Gateway Arctic test (-40 °C, boot)
  • IP67 test (keypad)
  • 12-month warranty (battery included — prorated after 12 months)

Our price sits roughly 30% below GE’s last list price ($6,500) and about 70% above typical refurbished listings. The delta pays for fresh battery, Arctic range testing, heater validation, and wireless security verification.
