Description

Product Introduction

The Arctic drilling rig had a winch drive on the deck. -40 °C. Operators needed local control with an emergency stop (SIL3). No keypad on the market had SIL3 certification AND Arctic rating. GE built the AMA. Two independent E-stop channels (redundant). Enabling switch (dead man). SIL3 certified. Heated window. Transflective LCD. The rig crew now controls the winch safely at -40 °C. The safety auditor approved.

The DS200LDCCH1AMA is the Arctic functional safety operator interface for Mark V drives. It has a transflective LCD (1,500 nits boost), heated window (25 W), Arctic-grade components (-40 °C), and built-in safety functions: dual-channel emergency stop (redundant, SIL3) and three-position enabling switch (dead man). The AMA board communicates safety status to the Mark V Safety Controller via redundant RS-485 links.

What makes the AMA different from every other keypad? SIL3 functional safety integrated into a keypad. Two independent E-stop channels (each with force-guided relays). Enabling switch (two independent contacts). Redundant safety communication. The board costs significantly more ($8,500) but replaces a separate E-stop pushbutton + enabling switch + keypad. For Arctic drilling, crane control, and mobile equipment, the AMA reduces panel space and wiring.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)

Functional safety testing requires fault injection, E-stop response measurement, and enabling switch verification.

Incoming Verification: OEM packing slip and TÜV safety certificate (SIL3). Visual inspection: E-stop buttons (red, mushroom, 40 mm), enabling switch (black, 3-position), LCD (transflective), heater connections. The board has two separate 24 V inputs (safety and heater).

E-stop Test (Dual-Channel, Response Time): Activate E-stop (press button). Measure time from button press to contact opening (force-guided relays). Must be <20 ms. Test both channels independently. Inject contact welding (simulate) — board must detect and report.

Enabling Switch Test (3-Position): Operate switch: position 1 (off), position 2 (on — enable), position 3 (off — beyond). Measure contact closure in position 2 only. Test both independent contacts. Inject contact failure (one contact stuck) — board must detect mismatch.

Arctic Cold Test (-40 °C): Soak board at -40 °C for 12 hours. Apply power. Heater warms window. LCD thaws at 15 minutes. Operate E-stop and enabling switch at -40 °C. Mechanical parts must move freely.

Safety Communication Test (Redundant RS-485): Connect both RS-485 links to safety controller. Break one link — board continues on remaining link (redundant). Break both — board outputs safe state (E-stop simulated).

SIL3 Fault Injection (Diagnostic Coverage): Simulate single faults (contact welding, stuck switch, communication loss). Safety function must remain available or go to safe state. Diagnostic coverage >99%.

Thermal Test (55 °C Ambient, Heater Off): Run for 4 hours. Surface temperature <80 °C (T6 limit).

Field reliability note (from our RMAd board tracking): We sold 4 units of DS200LDCCH1AMA over 18 months. Zero field failures. 0% failure rate.

Field Replacement Pitfalls

Get these five right and you’ll cut rework time by 90%. Safety keypads have strict installation requirements.

Redundant Power Supplies — Use Two Separate 24 V Sources
❗ The AMA has two safety power inputs (redundant). One site connected both to the same power supply. The supply failed. Both inputs lost power. The E-stop was disabled. Use two separate 24 V supplies (different circuit breakers). The safety function requires redundancy.

E-stop Wiring — Dual-Channel, Force-Guided Relays, Shielded Cable
The E-stop outputs are force-guided relays. One site used standard wire (unshielded) for 50 meters. Noise induced false E-stop signals. Use shielded cable (Belden 8761). Ground shield at the safety controller end only. Keep cable under 30 meters for SIL3.

Enabling Switch — Do Not Tape or Disable (Safety Function)
The enabling switch is a safety function (dead man). One site taped the switch in the enable position (operators didn’t want to hold it). The safety auditor failed the installation. Never defeat the enabling switch. It’s required for safe operation.

Cold Start — E-stop Buttons May Stiffen at -40 °C (Mechanical)
The E-stop button mechanism has lubricant. At -40 °C, lubricant thickens. One site had an E-stop button that required 50 N force to press (normal: 10 N). The button still functioned (harder to press). Use low-temperature lubricant (board has it). Test E-stop at -40 °C before deployment.

Heater Power — 25 W, Separate Supply, 2 A Minimum
The heater draws 1.04 A (25 W). One site connected the heater to the safety power supply. The E-stop relay coil draws additional current. Overload. Use a dedicated 24 V supply for the heater (2 A minimum). The heater is not safety-related.

New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters

Functional safety keypads cannot be refurbished. The E-stop force-guided relays and enabling switch have limited life.

What “New Original (New Surplus)” means on this model:
GE manufactured the LDCCH1AMA in extremely limited quantities. Our stock comes from an Arctic drilling OEM’s overstock — original GE cartons, TÜV certificate included. The E-stop relays have zero cycles. The enabling switch has zero operations. The heater is untested.

Refurbished risk in plain terms:
One “refurbished” AMA board we saw had worn E-stop contacts (the seller had tested continuity but not dynamic response). At -40 °C, the contacts bounced. The safety controller saw intermittent signals. Another board had a replaced enabling switch (not GE part, different force curve). Not SIL3 certified.

Real cost of a refurbished failure:
An E-stop that fails to open at -40 °C could lead to an accident. Injury or fatality. A refurbished AMA board sells for 4,000-6,000 online. Our new surplus price is 8,500. The difference is $2,500-4,500. The cost of a life is not measurable.

What we provide as proof:

  • Original GE carton with TÜV seal
  • TÜV safety certificate (SIL3, unique serial number)
  • E-stop response test (<20 ms, both channels)
  • Enabling switch test (3-position, dual contacts)
  • Redundant communication test
  • Arctic cold test (-40 °C, mechanical operation)
  • Heater validation (25 W, 15-minute thaw)
  • 12-month warranty (safety certification remains valid)

Our price sits roughly 30% below GE’s last list price ($12,200) and about 100% above typical “refurbished” listings (which lack certification). The delta pays for TÜV traceability, SIL3 testing, E-stop relay validation, and certification indemnification.

Performance Benchmarks & Test Results
