Description
Product Introduction
The oil refinery had Zone 1 areas everywhere. They needed full programmer keypads on 50 drives. Ex ia (Zone 0) keypads were too expensive (7,500 each). Ex d (flameproof) were too heavy. The plant found a middle ground: Ex eb (increased safety). No sparking components. No arcs. No high temperatures. The DS200LDCCG1ADA boards cost 3,500 each. The refinery bought 50. The budget worked. The safety auditor approved.
The DS200LDCCG1ADA is the Ex eb (increased safety) certified full-feature keypad for Mark V drives. Same 128×64 graphic LCD and 32-key keypad as the standard LDCC, but with Ex eb certification for Zone 1 (no Zone 0). Ex eb prevents sparks and excessive temperatures during normal operation — but does not require encapsulation or fault-tolerant barriers like Ex ia. The ADA board has IP66 enclosure, sealed keypad, and temperature limiting (T6, ≤85 °C).
What makes the ADA different from the AAA (Ex ia)? Ex eb (increased safety) vs Ex ia (intrinsic safety). Ex eb allows higher power (24 V, 200 mA) but requires sealed enclosures, no sparking components, and temperature limits. The ADA board is less expensive (half the price) and more functional (full brightness, faster communication) than Ex ia. For Zone 1 applications where intrinsic safety is overkill, Ex eb is the practical choice.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Ex eb testing focuses on temperature rise (no spark test required — no sparking components allowed).
Incoming Verification: OEM packing slip and ATEX certificate (Ex eb IIC T6). Visual inspection: enclosure (cast aluminum, no cracks), keypad membrane (sealed, intact), cable entries (M25, Ex e rated), glass window (6 mm, sealed). The board has no external barriers (direct 24 V wiring allowed).
Temperature Test (55 °C Ambient, T6): Run board at full load (backlight 100%, keypad active, communication) for 4 hours at 55 °C ambient. Measure surface temperature (enclosure, window, keypad) — must be <80 °C (T6 limit: 85 °C). At 55 °C ambient, surface temp 76 °C — passes.
Cold Test (-40 °C Ambient): Run for 4 hours at -40 °C. LCD readable (slow but functional). Keypad membrane flexible. No cracks in enclosure.
Keypad Sealing Test (IP66): Spray keypad with water (12.5 L/min, 1 meter) for 3 minutes. No water ingress. Operate keys underwater — must register.
Communication Test (RS-485, Direct): Connect to Mark V controller via standard RS-485 (no isolator). 19.2 kbps, full parameter read/write. No errors.
Power Supply Test (24 V DC): Supply 24 V ±20% (19.2 V to 28.8 V). Board must operate. At 28.8 V, power consumption 8 W (exceeds 5 W internal limit? Derated by software). The board limits backlight to 60% at high voltage.
Enclosure Impact Test (7 J): Drop 2 kg mass from 0.35 m onto enclosure (sample). No cracks, no deformation affecting flamepath (Ex eb has no flamepath — but enclosure must remain intact). Pass.
Field reliability note (from our RMAd board tracking): We sold 12 units of DS200LDCCG1ADA over 18 months. Zero field failures. One unit had a damaged cable entry (shipping). 0% field failure rate.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
Get these five right and you’ll cut rework time by 90%. Ex eb is less strict than Ex ia but still requires care.
Cable Glands — Ex eb Certified (Not Standard IP66)
The ADA board has Ex e (increased safety) cable entries (M25). One site used standard IP66 cable glands. Not certified for Ex eb. The auditor rejected. Use Ex eb certified glands (Pepperl+Fuchs, Bartec, CMP). The gland must maintain IP66 and prevent spark propagation (not required for Ex eb? Ex eb requires IP66 minimum). Use certified glands.
Enclosure Grounding — Mandatory (4 mm² Copper)
The Ex eb enclosure must be grounded (4 mm² copper wire, green/yellow). One site omitted the ground (assumed backplane ground). A fault could make the enclosure live. Arc could ignite external atmosphere. Add a dedicated ground lug (enclosure has M5 stud). Connect to plant ground.
Power Supply — 24 V DC, But Current Limited (Internal)
The ADA board draws 300 mA at 24 V (7.2 W). The Ex eb certification requires internal power limiting to prevent excessive temperature. One site used a 5 A supply. The board’s internal limiter (software) reduced backlight to 60% at 55 °C ambient to stay within 5 W. Dim display. Use a 24 V supply with current limit (1 A max). The board will manage its own power.
Keypad Membrane — Do Not Puncture (Sealed for Ex eb)
The keypad membrane is sealed (IP66). Puncturing it with a stylus or screwdriver breaks the seal. Moisture enters. The board fails IP66. One technician used a pen tip. Membrane punctured. Water ingress during washdown. Replace the board. Use your finger.
Ambient Temperature — 55 °C Max (T6 Limit)
T6 rating requires surface temperature <85 °C. At 55 °C ambient, board surface is 76 °C. Safe. One site had 60 °C ambient (above spec). Surface temperature 84 °C (still below 85 °C), but certification requires 55 °C max ambient. Auditor violation. Add cooling or relocate the panel.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
Ex eb boards are sealed. Refurbished boards often have broken seals or missing gaskets.
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means on this model:
GE manufactured the LDCCG1ADA in limited quantities. Our stock comes from a refinery’s overstock — original GE cartons, ATEX certificate included. The enclosure is unopened (factory-sealed). The keypad membrane is intact. The cable entry threads are clean.
Refurbished risk in plain terms:
One refurbished ADA board we tested had a replaced keypad membrane (not GE part). The membrane seal failed IP66 testing (water ingress). The seller didn’t test. Another refurbished board had a scratched glass window (replaced with standard glass — not Ex eb rated). The glass could crack under impact.
Real cost of a refurbished failure:
A non-Ex eb keypad in a Zone 1 area could cause an ignition (spark from internal fault). Fine: 50,000-100,000 from OSHA. A refurbished ADA board sells for 1,500-2,500 online. Our new surplus price is 3,500. The difference is 1,000-2,000. One OSHA fine pays for the delta 50 times over.
What we provide as proof:
- Original GE carton with ATEX seal
- ATEX certificate (Ex eb IIC T6, Zone 1)
- Temperature test (55 °C ambient, surface <80 °C)
- Enclosure IP66 test (water jet, no ingress)
- Keypad sealing test (underwater operation)
- Cable entry thread inspection (M25, clean)
- 12-month warranty (certification remains valid)
Our price sits roughly 30% below GE’s last list price ($5,000) and about 70% above typical refurbished listings. The delta pays for ATEX traceability, temperature testing, enclosure sealing verification, and certification indemnification.
