Description

Product Introduction

The solar farm inverter station sat in direct desert sunlight. The standard KLDA screen was unreadable — washed out by the sun. Operators used flashlights to see the display. The plant installed DS200KLDBG1A boards. 1000 nit backlight (5x brighter). Anti-glare coating. The screen is readable in full sun. The operators put away their flashlights.

The DS200KLDBG1A is the high-brightness outdoor operator interface for Mark V drives. Same graphic LCD and 20-key keypad as the G1A, but with 1000 nits backlight (standard: 200 nits). The KLDB also has anti-glare and anti-reflective coatings, UV-resistant front panel, and extended temperature range (-30 °C to +60 °C). The keypad is backlit (amber) for night operation. The board has a sunlight-readable mode (automatically boosts backlight when ambient light is high).

What makes the G1A different from the ACC (marine)? The KLDB is for direct sunlight (brightness), not salt spray. The front panel is UV-resistant (won’t yellow). The LCD has anti-glare (not anti-fog). The temperature range is wider (-30 °C vs -25 °C). The KLDB is for desert solar, outdoor pump stations, and any application where the sun hits the display.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)

High-brightness testing requires a light meter and a solar simulator.

Incoming Verification: OEM packing slip. Visual inspection: LCD has anti-glare coating (slightly matte, not glossy). The ambient light sensor (small photodiode) is near the top of the bezel. The keypad legends are UV-resistant (slightly textured).

Brightness Test (Sunlight Mode): Place board in dark room. Cover ambient light sensor (simulate dark). Backlight must be 200 nits (±10%). Shine 100,000 lux light on sensor (solar simulator). Backlight must boost to 1000 nits (±10%) within 1 second. Measure with light meter.

Sunlight Readability Test (Subjective): Place board in outdoor sunlight (100,000 lux). Display must be readable from 1 meter. Anti-glare coating must eliminate reflections.

UV Exposure Test (Sample): Expose front panel to UV lamp (equivalent to 5 years sunlight) for 500 hours. No yellowing, no cracking, legends must remain readable.

Keypad Backlight Test (Night Mode): Adjust backlight from 0% to 100% in 10% steps. Even illumination, no bright spots.

Temperature Test (60 °C Ambient): Run board at 60 °C for 4 hours. Backlight must maintain 1000 nits (LEDs derate at high temperature — expect 900 nits minimum). LCD must remain readable (contrast compensation).

Cold Test (-30 °C Ambient): Run board at -30 °C for 4 hours. LCD response time slow (normal). Backlight must operate (LEDs work at cold). Keypad must register presses (rubber dome may stiffen — test).

Field reliability note (from our RMAd board tracking): We sold 16 units of DS200KLDBG1A over 18 months. One field failure — sunlight sensor failed (stuck in sunlight mode, backlight always at 1000 nits). Board still usable but power consumption high. 6% failure rate.

Field Replacement Pitfalls

Get these five right and you’ll cut rework time by 90%. The KLDB is for outdoor use — installation matters.

Ambient Light Sensor — Keep Clean (Dust Blocks Sensor)
The ambient light sensor is a small photodiode. Dust or dirt on the sensor will block light. The board will stay in indoor mode (200 nits) even in sunlight. One site had a dusty desert environment. The sensor was caked with dust. The display was unreadable in sunlight. Clean the sensor with a soft cloth. The sensor is under the front bezel (small hole). Keep it clear.

Sunlight Mode Timeout — 30 Seconds (Adjustable)
Sunlight mode (1000 nits) draws 600 mA (double the current). The board has a 30-second timeout — after 30 seconds without high ambient light, it returns to indoor mode. One site expected the board to stay in sunlight mode all day (it doesn’t). It cycles: bright light triggers boost, then times out, then triggers again. Normal behavior. If you need constant 1000 nits, disable timeout (parameter P2055). But monitor backplane power (600 mA may exceed your rack’s limit).

UV Exposure — Front Panel Will Yellow After 5+ Years
The UV-stabilized front panel is rated for 5 years outdoor. After 5 years, the plastic may yellow slightly. One site had a 7-year-old KLDB with yellowed bezel (still functional, but looks aged). The LCD and keypad were fine. The bezel is not field-replaceable (entire front assembly). Plan to replace the board after 5-7 years for cosmetic reasons. The electronics last longer.

IP66 Sealing — Gasket Must Be Compressed Evenly
IP66 requires the gasket to be compressed evenly. One site overtightened the mounting screws. The gasket squeezed out. Water entered. The board corroded. Torque mounting screws to 0.4 Nm (3.5 in-lbs). Use a torque screwdriver. The gasket has a compression limit.

Power Supply — Sunlight Mode Draws 600 mA (Check Backplane Limit)
Sunlight mode draws 600 mA from +5 V backplane. Standard KLDA draws 300 mA. One site had a rack with 2 KLDB boards (1.2 A), a controller (600 mA), and 4 I/O boards (200 mA each = 800 mA). Total = 2.6 A (exceeds 2.5 A limit). The backplane voltage dropped to 4.6 V. The KLDB boards reset randomly. Moved one KLDB to a remote rack. Problem solved. Calculate your backplane current in sunlight mode.

New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters

The KLDB’s high-brightness backlight (1000 nits) degrades with age. Refurbished boards have dimmer backlights.

What “New Original (New Surplus)” means on this model:
GE manufactured the KLDBG1A in limited quantities. Our stock comes from a solar farm’s overstock — original GE cartons, boards never powered. The high-brightness LED backlight has zero hours. The anti-glare coating is pristine. The UV-stabilized panel is not yellowed.

Refurbished risk in plain terms:
One refurbished KLDB we tested had a backlight of only 600 nits at 100% (spec: 1000 nits). The LED had aged. The seller tested indoors (200 nits mode) and didn’t measure sunlight mode. Another refurbished board had a scratched anti-glare coating (cleaned with abrasive cloth). The display reflected sunlight — unreadable.

Real cost of a refurbished failure:
An unreadable display in direct sunlight means the operator cannot monitor the drive. They have to return to the control room (5-10 minutes walk). Multiple trips waste hours. A refurbished KLDB sells for 500-900 online. Our new surplus price is 1,500. The difference is $600-1,000. One week of lost productivity pays for the delta.

What we provide as proof:

  • Original GE carton
  • Brightness test (1000 nits ±10%)
  • Sunlight readability test (100,000 lux)
  • Ambient light sensor test (auto-boost)
  • UV exposure sample test (batch)
  • Backlight power measurement (600 mA)
  • 12-month warranty (including backlight degradation)

Our price sits roughly 35% below GE’s last list price ($2,300) and about 70% above typical refurbished listings. The delta pays for high-brightness LED verification, anti-glare coating inspection, and UV stability.

Performance Benchmarks & Test Results
