Description
Product Introduction
The PG2 combines the high-inrush tolerant power supply with an active thermal management system—a thermistor on the backplane adjusts fan speed based on internal temperature. It’s the chassis for large DC bus systems with multiple gate driver boards, where both startup current and heat are concerns.
The model number tells the story: “302” is the high-power DC chassis, “DCI” indicates DC input with isolation, “A” is the standard A-type filter, “P” indicates the high-inrush tolerant module, and “G2″ is the revision with the 80mm fans and the thermal throttle. The high-inrush module includes a soft-start circuit that limits inrush to 25A and a larger input capacitor bank (10,000µF). The thermal throttle runs fans at 30% speed below 30°C, 60% between 30-45°C, and 100% above 45°C. The chassis includes the 300W DC power module (5V @ 20A, ±15V @ 5A, 24V @ 10A), the heavy-duty backplane, and the 80mm fans (45 CFM). The depth is 17.5”. One caveat: the thermal throttle uses 4-wire PWM fans; replacing them with 3-wire units will break the throttle.

Compatible Replacement Models
✅ Drop-in Replacement:
- 531X302DCIAPG2 directly replaces 531X302DCIAPG1. The PG2 has the same high-inrush tolerant module, same backplane, same dimensions. The only difference is the thermal throttle—the PG2 has temperature-controlled fans, while the PG1 has fixed-speed fans. Swap your boards and power module over.
- 531X302DCIAAG5 (standard 302 chassis): The PG2 is the high-inrush version with thermal throttle. If you need both, the PG2 is a direct replacement.
⚠️ Software Compatible (Requires Recompile):
- None. The thermal throttle is a hardware system—no firmware, no communication. No recompile needed.
❌ Hardware Incompatible:
- 531X302DCIAPG2 with fans that don’t support PWM: The thermal throttle uses 4-wire PWM fans. If you replace the fans with 3-wire units, the throttle won’t work.
- 531X302DCIAPG2 with a 212-series AC power supply: The 302 is DC input only.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: What’s the advantage of the PG2 over the PG1?
A: The thermal throttle. The PG2’s fans run slower when the chassis is cool—quieter and longer fan life. The PG1 has fixed-speed fans. The PG2 is a drop-in replacement for the PG1; it’s the same chassis with a better fan control system.
Q: Does the thermal throttle reduce the cooling capacity?
A: No. The fans run at 100% when the chassis is above 45°C—exactly the same as fixed-speed fans. The maximum cooling capacity is the same as the PG1.
Q: Can I use the PG2 with a 24V DC input?
A: Yes. The DC power module accepts 24V, 48V, or 125V DC, jumper-selectable. At 24V input, the module draws up to 15A at full load.
Q: Does the PG2 have a ground lug?
A: Yes. There’s an M6 ground stud on the rear panel. Connect it to your plant grounding bar.
Q: Can I use the PG2 with a 120V AC input?
A: No. The PG2 is DC input only.
Q: Does the PG2 come with the expansion cable?
A: No. The expansion cable (fiber-optic or backplane ribbon) is not included. We recommend using the GE-supplied cable.
Q: What’s the maximum number of gate driver boards I can power with the PG2?
A: A typical gate driver board draws about 2.5A on the 5V rail. The 302 provides 20A on the 5V rail, so you could power up to 8 gate driver boards. The 24V rail is 10A, which is also sufficient.
Q: The PG2 is 30 lbs empty. Is that a problem for rack mounting?
A: Use all four mounting screws on each rack ear. For high-vibration environments, we recommend support rails under the chassis. Ensure your rack rails are rated for the weight.
