Description

Product Introduction

Big drives in cold environments need both power and warmth. The GE 531X302DCIAHG2 is the 302-series high-power DC chassis with an integrated thermostatically controlled heater—a 50W resistive element that keeps the internal temperature above 5°C. It’s the chassis for large DC bus systems in unheated enclosures, outdoor cabinets, or high-humidity environments where condensation is a problem.

The model number is descriptive: “302” is the high-power DC chassis, “DCI” indicates DC input with isolation, “A” is the standard A-type filter, “H” adds the heater, and “G2″ is the revision with the 80mm fans. The heater is identical to the one in the 300CCHAHM2: 50W, fixed 5°C thermostat, and a backup power input (24V DC). The chassis includes the 300W DC power module (5V @ 20A, ±15V @ 5A, 24V @ 10A), the heavy-duty backplane, and the 80mm fans (45 CFM). The depth is 17.5″ to accommodate the heater and the larger power module. One caveat: the G2 has the older .093” fan connectors. If you need the Mini-Fit connector, you’d need a later revision. Also, the backup power input is separate from the main DC input—you’ll need to supply a separate 24V battery or UPS for the heater to run when the main DC is off.

Compatible Replacement Models

✅ Drop-in Replacement:

  • 531X302DCIAHG2 directly replaces 531X302DCIAHG1 and 531X302DCIAHG0. The HG2 has the same heater, same thermostat, same 300W power module. The only difference is the fans—the HG2 has 80mm fans (same as the HG1). The HG2 revision improved the fan bearings and added a thermal sensor. Swap your boards and power module over.
  • 531X302DCIAAG5 (A-filter, no heater): The AHG2 is the heated version of the AAG5. If you need a heater, the AHG2 is a direct replacement. The backplane and slot spacing are identical.

⚠️ Software Compatible (Requires Recompile):

  • None. The heater is an analog control system—thermostat and resistive element. No firmware, no communication. No recompile needed.

❌ Hardware Incompatible:

  • 531X302DCIAHG2 with a backup power input below 22V: The heater requires 24V ±10% for proper operation. At lower voltage, the heater won’t reach full temperature.
  • 531X302DCIAHG2 with a master chassis that doesn’t support expansion: The 302 can be a master or expansion chassis. If you’re using it as an expansion, the master must support the 302 interface.
  • 531X302DCIAHG2 with a 212-series AC power supply: The 302 is DC input only.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why does a 300W chassis need a heater?

A: 302-series chassis are often used in large drive systems placed in outdoor cabinets, unheated warehouses, or high-humidity environments (e.g., paper mills). The heater keeps the internal temperature above 5°C, preventing condensation from forming on the boards and power module. Condensation can cause short circuits and corrosion. The heater also prevents electrolytic capacitors from freezing (they can fail when frozen).

Q: How does the heater get power when the main DC input is off?

A: The chassis has a separate backup power input (24V DC). You connect this to a UPS or battery. When the main DC input is on, the heater draws power from the main input. When the main input is off, the thermostat still senses the temperature. If the chassis drops below 5°C, the heater draws power from the backup input. This keeps the chassis warm even during extended power outages.

Q: Can I adjust the thermostat setpoint?

A: No. The thermostat is fixed at 5°C. This is optimal for condensation prevention. If you need a different temperature, you’d need to replace the thermostat—a modification we don’t recommend.

Q: The AHG2 has 80mm fans. Is that enough with the heater and 300W module?

A: Yes. The heater adds 50W of heat, but the 300W power module is about 40W dissipation. The 80mm fans (45 CFM) are sufficient for the combined thermal load. In a cold environment, the heater is on but the ambient air is cold, so heat is easily dissipated. In a warm environment, the heater is off, so the thermal load is just the power module and boards. The fans handle both scenarios.

Q: Can I use the AHG2 with a 24V DC input?

A: Yes. The DC power module accepts 24V, 48V, or 125V DC, jumper-selectable. At 24V input, the module draws up to 15A at full load—so ensure your DC bus can provide that current. The heater backup input is separate and also requires 24V DC.

Q: Does the heater affect the chassis’s UL rating?

A: No. The heater and thermostat are UL-recognized components, and the chassis retains its UL 508A certification. The heater is fully isolated from the logic circuits and has its own fuse.

Q: The AHG2 is 33 lbs empty. Is that a problem for rack mounting?

A: The AHG2 is the heaviest of the 302-series chassis—use all four mounting screws on each rack ear. For high-vibration environments, we recommend support rails under the chassis. The weight is within the standard 19″ rack capacity, but it’s near the upper end.

Q: Can I use the AHG2 with a 120V AC input?

A: No. The AHG2 is DC input only. If you have AC power, you need the AC-input version (531X302ACIAxx).

Q: Does the AHG2 have a ground lug?

A: Yes. There’s an M6 ground stud on the rear panel. Connect it to your plant grounding bar. The heater’s backup power input also has a separate ground terminal.

Q: Does the AHG2 come with the expansion cable?

A: No. The expansion cable (fiber-optic or backplane ribbon) is not included. The AHG2 has the ports for the cable, but you need to supply the cable separately.

Q: Can I upgrade the AHG2 from 80mm to 92mm fans?

A: The AHG2 chassis is designed for 80mm fans. 92mm fans won’t fit without modifying the fan housings. If you need more airflow, you’d need the G5 revision (531X302DCIAHG5), which has 92mm fans. The AHG2 is fine for most installations; the G5 is for hotter cabinets or if the heater runs frequently.
