Description

Product Introduction

The G4 is the thermal-savvy version of the heavy-duty 302 chassis. The GE 531X302DCIABG4 combines the high-power 300W DC input and the B-type filter with an active thermal management system—a thermistor on the backplane that adjusts fan speed based on internal temperature. It’s the chassis for large DC bus systems in environments where heat and noise are both concerns.

The model number tells the story: “302” is the high-power DC chassis, “DCI” indicates DC input with isolation, “AB” is the enhanced B-type filter, and “G4″ is the revision with the 80mm fans and the active thermal throttle. The G4 has a thermistor on the backplane that monitors internal temperature. The fans run at 30% speed below 30°C, 60% between 30-45°C, and 100% above 45°C. The chassis includes the 300W DC power module (5V @ 20A, ±15V @ 5A, 24V @ 10A), the heavy-duty backplane, and the 80mm fans (45 CFM). The B-filter provides 80dB attenuation and 20kA surge protection. The depth is 17.5” (same as the G3). One caveat: the thermal throttle system uses 4-wire PWM fans. If you replace the fans with 3-wire units, the throttle won’t work.

Compatible Replacement Models

✅ Drop-in Replacement:

  • 531X302DCIABG4 directly replaces 531X302DCIABG3. The G4 has the same B-type filter, same 300W power module, same backplane. The only difference is the thermal throttle—the G4 has temperature-controlled fans, while the G3 has fixed-speed fans. The G4 is a drop-in upgrade for better noise and fan life. Swap your boards and power module over.
  • 531X302DCIAAG5 (A-filter version with thermal throttle): The G4 is the B-filter version of the AAG5. If you need both the enhanced filter and thermal management, the G4 is the chassis for you.

⚠️ Software Compatible (Requires Recompile):

  • None. The thermal throttle is a hardware system—thermistor, comparator, PWM driver. No firmware, no communication. No recompile needed.

❌ Hardware Incompatible:

  • 531X302DCIABG4 with fans that don’t support PWM: The thermal throttle uses 4-wire PWM fans. If you replace the fans with 3-wire or 2-wire units, the throttle won’t work. Stick with 4-wire 80mm fans.
  • 531X302DCIABG4 with a DC bus that has high leakage current: The B-filter’s leakage current is 3mA. If your DC bus already has leakage, you might trip GFCIs.
  • 531X302DCIABG4 with a 212-series AC power supply: The 302 is DC input only.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What’s the difference between the G4 and the G3?

A: The thermal throttle. The G4 has temperature-controlled fans that run slower when the chassis is cool—quieter and longer fan life. The G3 has fixed-speed fans. The G4 also has 4-wire PWM fans, while the G3 has 3-wire fans. The G4 is a drop-in replacement for the G3; it’s the same chassis with a better fan control system.

Q: Does the thermal throttle reduce the cooling capacity?

A: No. The thermal throttle runs fans at 100% when the chassis is above 45°C—exactly the same as fixed-speed fans. The only difference is that the fans run slower when cooling isn’t needed. The maximum cooling capacity is the same as the G3.

Q: The G4 has 80mm fans. Is that enough with the B-filter and 300W module?

A: Yes. The B-filter adds about 5W of heat, and the 300W module adds about 40W (the rest is dissipated as output power). The 80mm fans (45 CFM at 100%) provide sufficient cooling. The thermal throttle ensures they run at 100% only when needed—so the chassis stays cool under full load.

Q: Can I use the G4 with a 24V DC input?

A: Yes. The DC power module accepts 24V, 48V, or 125V DC, jumper-selectable. At 24V input, the module draws up to 15A at full load—so ensure your DC bus can provide that current.

Q: Does the thermal throttle have a manual override?

A: No. The G4 doesn’t have a switch or jumper to override the thermal throttle. If you want fixed-speed fans, you’d need the G3 chassis. The G4 is designed for automatic control.

Q: Can I use the G4 with a 120V AC input?

A: No. The G4 is DC input only. If you have AC power, you need the AC-input version (531X302ACIAxx).

Q: Does the G4 have a ground lug?

A: Yes. There’s an M6 ground stud on the rear panel. Connect it to your plant grounding bar. The B-filter’s surge protection is referenced to this ground.

Q: Does the G4 come with the expansion cable?

A: No. The expansion cable (fiber-optic or backplane ribbon) is not included. The G4 has the ports for the cable, but you need to supply the cable separately. We recommend using the GE-supplied cable.

Q: The G4 is 30 lbs empty. Is that a problem for rack mounting?

A: The G4 is heavy—use all four mounting screws on each rack ear. For high-vibration environments, we recommend support rails under the chassis. The weight is within the standard 19″ rack capacity, but it’s near the upper end. Ensure your rack rails are rated for the weight.

Q: Can I upgrade the G4 from 80mm to 92mm fans?

A: The G4 chassis is designed for 80mm fans. 92mm fans won’t fit without modifying the fan housings. If you need more airflow, you’d need the G5 revision (531X302DCIABG5), which has 92mm fans. The G4’s thermal throttle is designed for 80mm fans; changing fan sizes would affect the temperature thresholds.
