Description

Product Introduction

Expansion chassis are often placed in harsh environments—paper mills, chemical plants, outdoor cabinets. The GE 531X301DCCCAM1 is the 301-series expansion chassis with conformal coating applied to the backplane, power module connectors, and critical traces. It’s the same DC-powered expansion rack as the AM1, but with a protective acrylic layer that shields against moisture, chemical vapors, and conductive dust.

The model number is descriptive: “301” is the expansion series, “DC” indicates DC input power, “CC” confirms the conformal coating, “A” is the standard Class A filter (DC version), and “M1″ is the revision with the 80mm fans and the 50W DC power module. The conformal coating is an acrylic resin, 2 mils thick, applied to the backplane, the expansion interface connectors, and the power module bay. The coating is UV-cured and meets GE spec E-1000. The chassis includes the standard 50W DC power module (5V @ 10A, 24V @ 3A), the expansion interface (fiber or cable), and the 80mm fans. The depth is 14.5” (same as the standard AM1). One caveat: the conformal coating makes repairs more difficult—you’ll need to strip the coating before soldering. It also adds a slight dielectric, but we haven’t seen any signal integrity issues at the backplane speeds.

Compatible Replacement Models

✅ Drop-in Replacement:

  • 531X301DCCCAM1 directly replaces 531X301DCCCAM0. The CCAM1 has the same conformal coating, same backplane, same power module. The only difference is the fans—the CCAM1 has improved fan bearings. Swap your boards and power module over.
  • 531X301DCCAM1 (standard expansion chassis): The CCAM1 is the conformal-coated version of the standard AM1. If you need harsh environment protection, the CCAM1 is a direct replacement. The backplane and slot spacing are identical. Move your boards over—the coating is already applied.

⚠️ Software Compatible (Requires Recompile):

  • None. The conformal coating is a protective layer—it doesn’t affect the electrical signals. No firmware, no configuration. No recompile needed.

❌ Hardware Incompatible:

  • 531X301DCCCAM1 with non-GE boards that have tight connector tolerances: The coating adds about 0.002″ to the connector surfaces. Some third-party boards with tight tolerances may not seat fully. Stick with OEM boards for guaranteed fit.
  • 531X301DCCCAM1 with a master chassis that doesn’t support expansion: The master must have the expansion interface connector.
  • 531X301DCCCAM1 with a 212-series AC power supply: The CCAM1 is DC input only.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What’s the purpose of conformal coating on an expansion chassis?

A: Expansion chassis are often placed in harsh environments—paper mills (high humidity, chlorine), cement plants (conductive dust), chemical processing (acid vapors), or outdoor cabinets. The coating prevents moisture and contaminants from corroding the copper traces and solder joints. It’s a vapor barrier, not a waterproof seal. The coating extends the life of the backplane in corrosive environments.

Q: Can I add conformal coating to a standard AM1 chassis myself?

A: You can, but we don’t recommend it. Conformal coating is tricky to apply properly—too thin and it doesn’t protect, too thick and it affects signal integrity. You also need to mask off the connectors and test points. GE applied this in a controlled environment. We’ve seen field-applied coating jobs that did more harm than good—the coating got into the connector pins and caused intermittent connections. Buy it pre-coated.

Q: How do I know if the chassis is coated?

A: Under good lighting, you’ll see a slight gloss or sheen on the backplane traces. The coating is clear acrylic, so it’s transparent, but it gives the surface a shiny, slightly plastic feel. If you run your fingernail lightly across a trace, you’ll feel the coating—it’s slightly rubbery. The model number also includes “CC” (conformal coating).

Q: Does the conformal coating affect the cooling performance?

A: No. The coating is on the backplane and connectors—not on the fans or airflow path. The coating doesn’t block airflow, and it doesn’t insulate heat-generating components (there are none on the backplane). Thermal performance is identical to the standard AM1.

Q: Can I use the CCAM1 with a 24V DC input?

A: Yes. The DC power module accepts 24V, 48V, or 125V DC, jumper-selectable. The input range for 24V is 19-30V. The module is field-replaceable (531X301PWR1). The coating doesn’t affect the power module.

Q: How long does the conformal coating last?

A: In a typical harsh environment, the acrylic coating lasts about 10-15 years before it starts to yellow and crack. Once it cracks, moisture can get under the coating and cause corrosion. If you see flaking or cracking, it’s time to replace the chassis. You can’t recoat a field-installed chassis—the coating process requires specialized equipment.

Q: Can I use the CCAM1 with a 120V AC input?

A: No. The CCAM1 is DC input only. If you have AC power, you need the AC-input expansion chassis (531X301DCCAxx). The CCAM1 is for battery-backed or DC bus systems.

Q: The CCAM1 has 80mm fans. Is that enough?

A: Yes. The coating doesn’t add heat. The expansion chassis has a lower thermal load than a master chassis. The 80mm fans (45 CFM) are sufficient for a fully loaded expansion chassis.

Q: Does the CCAM1 have a ground lug?

A: Yes. There’s an M6 ground stud on the rear panel. Connect it to your plant grounding bar. This is required for safety and EMI performance. The coating doesn’t affect the ground connection—the lug is uncoated.

Q: Does the CCAM1 come with the expansion cable?

A: No. The expansion cable (fiber-optic or backplane ribbon) is not included. The CCAM1 has the ports for the cable, but you need to supply the cable separately. We recommend using the GE-supplied cable. We stock the cables if you need them.

Q: Is the CCAM1 compatible with the standard AM1’s power module?

A: Yes. The CCAM1 uses the same 50W DC power module (531X301PWR1). The power module is interchangeable between the CCAM1 and AM1. The coating is only on the chassis backplane and connectors—the power module is not coated (except for the connector pins). So you can swap modules between coated and uncoated chassis without issue.

Q: What’s the maximum number of expansion chassis I can connect if I’m using the CCAM1?

A: The expansion interface supports up to 4 expansion chassis in a daisy chain. The CCAM1 is just another expansion chassis—it doesn’t limit the daisy chain. The coating doesn’t affect the expansion interface.
