Expansion chassis often sit in remote locations where noise and fan wear are concerns. The GE 531X301DCCATM1 is the 301-series expansion chassis with a thermal throttle system that adjusts fan speed based on internal temperature—quiet and efficient when cool, full cooling when needed. The fans run at 30% speed below 30°C, 60% between 30°C and 45°C, and 100% above 45°C.
The model number is descriptive: “301” is the expansion series, “DC” indicates DC input power, “CA” is the standard Class A filter (DC version), “T” adds the thermal throttle, and “M1″ is the revision with the 80mm fans and the 50W DC power module. The thermal throttle system uses a thermistor on the backplane to monitor temperature, with a small control board that adjusts the fan speed using PWM. The fans are 4-wire 80mm units. - 531X301DCCAM1 (standard expansion chassis): The TM1 is the thermal throttle version of the standard AM1. If you want smart fan control, the TM1 is a direct replacement. The backplane and slot spacing are identical. Move your boards over—the thermal system is ready to go.
⚠️ Software Compatible (Requires Recompile):
- None. The thermal throttle system is entirely analog—thermistor, comparator, PWM driver. No microcontroller, no firmware, no communication. No recompile needed.
❌ Hardware Incompatible:
- 531X301DCCATM1 with a master chassis that doesn’t support expansion: The master must have the expansion interface connector.
- 531X301DCCATM1 with fans that don’t support PWM: The thermal throttle system uses 4-wire fans (PWM controlled). If you replace the fans with 3-wire or 2-wire fans, the thermal throttle won’t work. Stick with 4-wire 80mm fans.
- 531X301DCCATM1 with a 212-series AC power supply: The TM1 is DC input only.

Q: What’s the advantage of thermal throttle over fixed-speed fans?
A: Two main advantages: (1) The fans run slower when the chassis is cool (below 30°C), which reduces noise and extends fan life. In a normal room-temperature environment, the fans run at 30% speed, which is very quiet. (2) The fans ramp up when needed—so you get maximum cooling when the chassis is hot, but without the constant noise of full-speed fans. This is especially useful for expansion chassis in quiet areas or where fan replacement is difficult.
Q: Can I adjust the thermal throttle thresholds?
A: No. The thresholds are fixed by the hardware (30°C and 45°C). GE designed the system to be simple and reliable—no user adjustments. The standard thresholds work well for most applications. If you want custom thresholds, you’d need to modify the control board—a modification we don’t recommend.
Q: What’s the typical fan speed in a normal room-temperature environment?
A: At 25°C ambient, the chassis internal temperature is typically about 30-35°C, so the fans run at 60% speed. That’s about 30 CFM and 38 dBA—noticeably quieter than full speed (40 dBA). In a cold room, the fans drop to 30% speed (18 CFM, 32 dBA) and run very quietly.
Q: The TM1 has 80mm fans. Are they the same as the standard AM1 chassis?
A: Yes—the TM1 uses the same 80mm fans as the AM1 chassis. The difference is the PWM control board that adjusts the fan speed. The fans themselves are standard 4-wire, 12V DC units. If a fan fails, you can replace it with the same part. We stock replacement fans.
Q: Can I use the TM1 in a 50°C ambient environment?
A: Yes. At 50°C ambient, the internal temperature will be above 45°C, so the fans will run at 100% speed continuously. The TM1 provides the same maximum cooling as the AM1 chassis. The thermal throttle doesn’t reduce the maximum cooling capacity—it just reduces the speed when cooling isn’t needed.
Q: Does the thermal throttle system require any configuration?
A: No. The system is plug-and-play. Install the chassis, power it up, and the fans will adjust automatically. There are no DIP switches, no jumpers, no software settings. The thermistor and control board are factory-calibrated.
Q: The thermistor is on the backplane. Where is it located?
A: The thermistor is near the center of the backplane, between slots 4 and 5. It’s a small bead-type sensor. It measures the temperature of the air flowing across the boards. It’s not a board temperature sensor—it measures the ambient temperature inside the chassis. The thermistor is soldered to the backplane and is not field-replaceable.
Q: What happens if the thermistor fails?
A: If the thermistor fails (open or short circuit), the control board interprets it as an over-temperature condition and runs the fans at 100% speed continuously. The chassis will still cool properly, but the fans won’t throttle down. The thermistor failure is rare—we’ve seen it in less than 1% of chassis. The fan control board is the more likely point of failure, but even that is rare.
Q: Can I override the thermal throttle and run the fans at 100% all the time?
A: You could, but you’d need to modify the control board. There’s no switch or jumper for manual override. If you want fixed-speed fans, you’re better off buying the standard AM1 chassis. The TM1 is designed for automatic control, and GE didn’t provide a manual override.
Q: Does the TM1 have a ground lug?
A: Yes. There’s an M6 ground stud on the rear panel. Connect it to your plant grounding bar. This is required for safety and EMI performance. The chassis ground is separate from the board grounds.
Q: Can I use the TM1 with a 24V DC input?
A: Yes. The DC power module accepts 24V, 48V, or 125V DC, jumper-selectable. The input range for 24V is 19-30V. The module is field-replaceable (531X301PWR1). It’s not hot-swappable—power down the chassis before replacing it.
