Description
Product Introduction
Some expansion racks need more juice—more I/O boards, more relays, or the occasional gate driver. The GE 531X301DCCAPM1 is the 301-series expansion chassis with an enhanced 80W DC power supply, delivering 12A on the 5V rail and 5A on the 24V rail. It’s the chassis for expansion racks that are densely populated or have power-hungry boards.
The model number is descriptive: “301” is the expansion series, “DC” indicates DC input power, “CA” is the standard Class A filter (DC version), “P” indicates the enhanced power module, and “M1″ is the revision with the 80mm fans. The 80W power module (field-replaceable, 531X301PWR1H) provides 5V @ 12A, ±15V @ 3A, and 24V @ 5A—significantly more than the standard 50W module. The chassis is slightly deeper (15.5”) and heavier (21 lbs empty) to accommodate the larger module and its heat sink. The fans are 80mm (45 CFM), which is sufficient because the enhanced module is more efficient (86% vs. 82%). The expansion interface (fiber or cable) is the same. One caveat: the enhanced module draws more input current (up to 4A at 24V input), so ensure your DC bus can handle the load.

Compatible Replacement Models
✅ Drop-in Replacement:
- 531X301DCCAPM1 directly replaces 531X301DCCAPM0. The PM1 has the same enhanced power module, same ratings, same dimensions. The only difference is the fans—the PM1 has improved fan bearings. Swap your boards and power module over.
- 531X301DCCAM1 (standard 50W expansion chassis): The PM1 is the high-power version of the standard AM1. If you need more current (12A on 5V, 5A on 24V), the PM1 is a direct replacement. The backplane and slot spacing are identical. Move your boards over—the enhanced module is a drop-in upgrade.
⚠️ Software Compatible (Requires Recompile):
- None. The power module is a dumb power supply—no communication, no configuration. No recompile needed. The higher power rating doesn’t affect the logic; it just lets you install more boards.
❌ Hardware Incompatible:
- 531X301DCCAPM1 with a DC bus that can’t supply the input current: At 24V input, the PM1 draws up to 4A. If your DC bus is marginal, the voltage may drop below the module’s cutoff, causing a shutdown. Check your DC bus capacity.
- 531X301DCCAPM1 with a master chassis that doesn’t support expansion: The master must have the expansion interface connector.
- 531X301DCCAPM1 with fiber-optic cable longer than 100 meters: The fiber transceivers are rated for 100 meters max.
- 531X301DCCAPM1 with a 212-series AC power supply: The PM1 is DC input only.
- 531X301DCCAPM1 in a rack depth under 16.5″: Remove the rear shroud (drops depth to 15.5″) if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Why would I choose the PM1 over the standard AM1?
A: More power. The PM1 provides 12A on the 5V rail (vs. 10A on the AM1) and 5A on the 24V rail (vs. 3A). It also provides 3A on the ±15V rails (vs. 2A). If your expansion rack has many boards—especially boards with relays or high-current digital outputs—the PM1 gives you the headroom. The PM1 is also more efficient (86% vs. 82%), so it runs cooler despite the higher output.
Q: Can I use the PM1 with gate driver boards?
A: Possibly. A typical gate driver board draws about 2.5A on the 5V rail. The PM1 can power up to 4 such boards (12A total). The 24V rail is 5A, which is enough for several boards. The PM1 is the best choice for expansion racks with gate drivers or other high-current boards.
Q: The PM1 has a 15A input fuse. Is that different from the AM1?
A: Yes. The AM1 has a 10A fuse. The PM1’s 15A fuse reflects the higher input current—up to 4A at 24V input. Don’t replace it with a smaller fuse; it will blow during normal operation. Use the specified 15A slow-blow fuse. We stock replacements.
Q: Does the PM1 have a status LED?
A: Yes. The front panel has a green “PWR” LED. It’s on when the DC input is present and the power module is working. If the LED is off, check the DC input voltage and the fuse. The PM1 also has a separate “5V OK” LED (green) and “24V OK” LED (green) on the power module itself—visible when you open the chassis.
Q: The PM1 is 15.5″ deep. Is that with or without the rear shroud?
A: The 15.5″ depth includes the rear shroud. Remove the rear shroud (four screws) to drop the depth to 14.5″. The enhanced power module is larger, so the chassis is deeper than the standard AM1.
Q: Can I use the PM1 with a 24V DC input?
A: Yes. The PM1 accepts 24V, 48V, or 125V DC, jumper-selectable. The input range for 24V is 19-30V. At 24V input and full load, the PM1 draws 4A—so ensure your DC bus can provide that. If you’re using a 125V input, the current draw is much lower (about 0.8A).
Q: What’s the efficiency of the PM1?
A: 86% typical at full load. That’s higher than the standard AM1 (82%). The improved efficiency means less heat—about 10W less dissipation at full load. That’s why the PM1 can have higher output power with the same 80mm fans.
Q: Can I use the PM1 with a 120V AC input?
A: No. The PM1 is DC input only. If you have AC power, you need the AC-input expansion chassis (531X301DCCAxx). The PM1 is for battery-backed or DC bus systems.
Q: How do I calculate if the PM1 can handle my boards?
A: Add up the current draw on the 5V rail and the 24V rail from each board’s specification sheet. The 5V rail is limited to 12A; the 24V rail is limited to 5A. If the total exceeds either limit, you’ll need to use the master chassis for some boards. For example, a fully loaded expansion rack with 10 boards might draw 8A on 5V and 3A on 24V—well within the PM1’s limits.
Q: Does the PM1 come with the expansion cable?
A: No. The expansion cable (fiber-optic or backplane ribbon) is not included. The PM1 has the ports for the cable, but you need to supply the cable separately. We recommend using the GE-supplied cable. We stock the cables if you need them.
Q: Can I upgrade a standard AM1 to the PM1?
A: Yes. The AM1 and PM1 share the same chassis. You can remove the 50W power module (531X301PWR1) and install the 80W module (531X301PWR1H). The modules are physically the same size? Actually, the PM1 module is slightly larger—it may not fit in the AM1 chassis if the AM1 has the compact module bay. Check the chassis interior. Most AM1 chassis have the larger bay that accepts both modules. If your AM1 has the smaller bay, you’ll need a new chassis. We can advise on compatibility.
