Remote expansion racks often need to connect to field devices—sensors, switches, actuators—in the plant. The GE 531X301DCCAJM1 is the 301-series expansion chassis with an integrated junction box at the bottom, complete with a 36-position terminal strip and cable entry knockouts. It saves you from mounting a separate terminal box next to the chassis and running wires through the cabinet.

Q: What’s the purpose of the junction box on an expansion chassis?
A: Expansion chassis are often placed in the field, close to the machinery. The junction box lets you land field wiring (from sensors, switches, actuators) directly on the chassis. Instead of running wires from your I/O boards to a separate terminal box, you land them on the integrated terminal strip. This saves space and reduces wiring errors. The pre-wiring from the terminal strip to the backplane is already done.
Q: Which slots does the junction box connect to?
A: The junction box is pre-wired to slots 2 through 6. Specifically, terminals 1-8 connect to slot 2, 9-16 to slot 3, 17-24 to slot 4, 25-30 to slot 5, and 31-36 to slot 6. The wiring is labeled on the terminal strip and on the backplane. Slots 7-10 are not connected to the junction box—you’ll need separate wiring for those.
Q: The JM1 is 17.5″ deep. Is that with or without the rear shroud?
A: The 17.5″ depth includes the junction box, the rear shroud, and the cable trough. The junction box extends about 2″ from the front of the chassis, and the rear shroud adds another 1″. The terminal strip doesn’t have barriers, so mixing AC and DC on adjacent terminals could cause noise coupling.
Q: The junction box has a door with a key lock. Does it come with keys?
A: Yes. The JM1 includes two keys. The lock is a standard cam lock. If you lose the keys, you can replace the lock with a standard 19mm cam lock (available at hardware stores). The lock is for basic security—keeping curious operators out. It’s not a high-security lock.
Q: Does the JM1 have a grounding terminal inside the junction box?
A: Yes. There’s an M6 ground lug inside the junction box. Connect your field wiring ground to this lug. The lug is bonded to the chassis ground. Don’t skip this—it’s required for safety and EMI performance.
Q: Can I use the JM1 with a 212-series power supply?
A: No. The JM1 has its own DC power module. The 212-series AC power supplies don’t fit in the JM1’s power bay. The bay is designed for the 301-series DC module (531X301PWR1). The JM1 is a self-contained expansion chassis.
Q: The JM1 has 80mm fans. Is that enough with the junction box?
A: Yes. The junction box is on the front of the chassis, below the fans. The 80mm fans are on the side, pulling air across the boards. The junction box doesn’t block the airflow path—it’s below the board slots. The 80mm fans (45 CFM) are sufficient for a fully loaded expansion chassis. The junction box doesn’t add significant heat.
Q: Can I use the JM1 with a 24V DC input?
A: Yes. The DC power module accepts 24V, 48V, or 125V DC, jumper-selectable. The input range for 24V is 19-30V. The module is field-replaceable (531X301PWR1). It’s not hot-swappable—power down the chassis before replacing it.
Q: What’s the maximum number of expansion chassis I can connect to a master chassis if I’m using the JM1?
A: The expansion interface supports up to 4 expansion chassis in a daisy chain. The JM1 is just another expansion chassis; it doesn’t limit the daisy chain. The total number of slots is 1 (master) + 10 (exp1) + 10 (exp2) + 10 (exp3) + 10 (exp4) = 41 slots. The junction box doesn’t affect the expansion chain.
Q: Does the JM1 come with the expansion cable?
A: No. The expansion cable (fiber-optic or backplane ribbon) is not included. The JM1 has the ports for the cable, but you need to supply the cable separately.
