Remote expansion racks often sit in less-than-ideal environments—unheated cabinets, outdoor enclosures, or damp basements. The GE 531X301DCCAHM1 is the 301-series expansion chassis with an integrated thermostatically controlled heater, designed to keep condensation and freezing at bay. It’s the same DC-powered expansion rack as the ADM1, but with a 50W heater, a fixed 5°C thermostat, and the standard 80mm fans.

The model number tells the story: “301” is the expansion series, “DC” indicates DC input power, “CA” is the standard Class A filter (DC version), “H” adds the heater, and “M1″ is the revision with the 80mm fans and the DC power module. The heater is identical to the one in the 300CCHAHM2 chassis—50W resistive element, fixed 5°C thermostat, backup power input (24V DC). The heater is on the bottom of the chassis, controlled by a thermostat. Q: Why would an expansion chassis need a heater?

A: Expansion chassis are often placed in remote cabinets—outdoor, unheated, or damp. The heater keeps the internal temperature above 5°C, preventing condensation from forming on the boards. Condensation can cause short circuits, corrosion, and intermittent faults. The heater also prevents the electrolytic capacitors from freezing (they can fail when frozen). If your expansion chassis is in a conditioned control room, you don’t need the heater.

Q: How does the heater get power when the main DC input is off?

A: The chassis has a separate backup power input (24V DC). You connect this to a UPS or battery. When the main DC input is on, the heater draws power from the main input. When the main input is off, the thermostat still senses the temperature. If the chassis drops below 5°C, the heater draws power from the backup input. The backup input is isolated from the main power supply—it only powers the heater, not the boards.

Q: Can I adjust the thermostat setpoint?

A: No. The thermostat is fixed at 5°C. This is optimal for condensation prevention. If you need a different temperature, you’d need to replace the thermostat (a modification we don’t recommend). The 5°C setpoint ensures the chassis stays above the dew point in most environments.

Q: The HM1 has 80mm fans. Is that enough with the heater?

A: Yes. The heater adds 50W of heat, but the expansion chassis has a lower thermal load than a master chassis. The 80mm fans (45 CFM) are sufficient. In a cold environment, the heater is on, but the ambient air is cold, so the heat is easily dissipated. In a warm environment, the heater is off, so the thermal load is just the boards and power module. The 80mm fans handle both scenarios.

Q: Does the heater affect the chassis’s UL rating?

A: No. The heater and thermostat are UL-recognized components, and the chassis retains its UL 508A certification. The heater is fully isolated from the logic circuits and has its own fuse. The UL certification covers the entire assembly.

Q: The HM1 has a backup power input. Can I use 12V instead of 24V?

A: No. The heater requires 24V DC ±10%. At 12V, the heater would draw twice the current (4.2A) and might not reach full temperature. The thermostat is designed for 24V. If your backup system is 12V, you’d need a DC-DC converter to step it up to 24V. We don’t stock those, but they’re available from electronics distributors.

Q: Can I use the HM1 with a 120V AC input?

A: No. The HM1 is DC input only. If you have AC power, you need the AC-input expansion chassis (531X301DCCAxx). The HM1 is for battery-backed or DC bus systems. Applying AC will damage the DC power module.

Q: Does the HM1 have a status LED for the heater?

A: No. There’s no indicator that the heater is running. The only way to know is to feel the chassis or measure the current draw. The chassis has a green “PWR” LED for the main power, but nothing for the heater. The heater is designed to be “set and forget.”

Q: What’s the typical power draw of the heater in a 0°C environment?

A: The heater draws 50W when it’s on. In a 0°C ambient, the heater cycles on for about 10 minutes, then off for 20 minutes—so the average power draw is about 17W. In a -20°C environment, the heater might run almost continuously (50W). The average power draw depends on the ambient temperature and the insulation of your cabinet.

Q: Can I use the HM1 with a 24V DC expansion cable instead of fiber?

A: The expansion interface is independent of the heater. You can use either fiber-optic (up to 100m) or backplane cable (up to 3m). The heater is a separate system. The choice of expansion cable doesn’t affect the heater. Use whatever connection method is appropriate for your installation distance and noise environment.

Q: The HM1 is deeper than the standard ADM1. Why?

A: The heater module adds about 1″ to the chassis depth. The heater is mounted at the bottom of the chassis, and it requires additional clearance for the heating element and the thermostat. The depth increase is similar to the 300CCHAHM2 chassis. If you’re tight on cabinet space, you may need to remove the rear shroud to save an inch (drops depth to 15.5″).

Q: Does the HM1 require special mounting for ventilation?

A: The HM1 has the same cooling requirements as the ADM1. The 80mm fans are on the side; they pull air across the boards. The heater doesn’t block airflow. However, the heater adds heat, so ensure your cabinet has adequate ventilation. The HM1 is not sealed—it’s an open-frame chassis inside a cabinet. For best results, keep the cabinet below 50°C. If your cabinet exceeds 50°C, you’ll need external cooling (fan or AC). The heater is for cold environments, not hot ones.
