A: The ST bulkhead connectors are standard, so they’ll accept single-mode fiber cables. However, the internal backplane routing is designed for multi-mode fiber (62.5/125µm). The transceivers on your boards are also typically multi-mode. If you use single-mode fiber, you’ll have higher attenuation and potentially signal loss. GE specified multi-mode for this chassis. Stick with multi-mode unless you’ve verified your boards support single-mode.
Q: The AFM5 has 6 ST ports on the rear. What are they for?
A: The 6 ports correspond to the fiber optic channels on the backplane. Typically, you’ll connect gate driver boards (like the 531X210DMCAGM1) to these ports.
