Standard chassis tap out at 55°C ambient. But some plants—steel mills, foundries, desert installations—run hotter than that. The GE 531X300CCHAEM2 is the 10-slot chassis built for those conditions. It’s the same 300 series rack with upgraded fans, wider-temperature components, and a modified thermal design that keeps your boards alive when the cabinet is pushing 60°C.

The “AEM2” suffix tells the story: “A” is the standard filter, “E” indicates extended temperature range, and “M2” is the revision with the 92mm fans and the specialized thermal management package. The extended temperature rating comes from three changes: (1) the fans are upgraded to 95 CFM each (versus 65 CFM on standard M5 chassis), (2) the capacitors on the AC input filter are rated for 105°C (versus 85°C), and (3) the chassis has additional ventilation louvers on the top and bottom covers. The result: the chassis can operate continuously at 65°C ambient with a fully loaded rack, whereas a standard chassis would be derating or shutting down at that temperature.   • 531X300CCHAEM2 with a 210-series power supply: The 210-series supply doesn’t physically fit in the 212-series power supply bay. You need a 212-series PSU (531X212DPCxx).
  • 531X300CCHAEM2 in a rack depth under 14.5″: The chassis is 14.5″ deep with the rear shroud. If your cabinet is shallower, you’ll need to remove the rear shroud (drops depth to 13.5″). However, the EM2’s additional ventilation louvers require clearance on the top and bottom—at least 2″ of open space above and below the chassis. If you’re rack-mounting it in a tight space, the louvers won’t be effective. The extended temperature rating assumes free airflow around the chassis.
  • 531X300CCHAEM2 with 3rd-party boards that have tight temperature ratings: The chassis can operate at 65°C, but your boards might not. Check the temperature rating of your specific boards (most GE boards are rated to 55°C). If you have 55°C-rated boards in a 65°C cabinet, the chassis won’t help—the boards will still overheat. The EM2 protects the backplane and filter, but it doesn’t cool the boards themselves beyond the increased airflow.

Q: What’s the actual difference between the standard chassis and the EM2?

A: Three main things: (1) fans move 95 CFM instead of 65 CFM, (2) capacitors are 105°C-rated instead of 85°C, and (3) the chassis has extra ventilation louvers on the top and bottom covers. The combination of these changes allows the chassis to operate at 65°C ambient instead of 55°C. The backplane is the same, the filter is the same (except for the caps), and the slot spacing is identical.

Q: The EM2 has 95 CFM fans. Can I replace them with quieter ones?

A: You can, but you’ll lose the extended temperature rating. The 95 CFM fans are what allow the chassis to operate at 65°C. If you swap to quieter, lower-flow fans, the maximum ambient temperature drops to 55°C or lower. If your cabinet is at 55°C or below, you can use standard fans. Q: What’s the noise level of the EM2 fans?

In a quiet control room, you will—it’s about as loud as a conversation. If noise is a concern and your cabinet is under 55°C, use a standard chassis. The EM2 is for hot environments where noise is a secondary concern.

Q: Does the EM2 require special mounting to ensure the louvers get airflow?

A: Yes. The additional louvers on the top and bottom covers need at least 2 inches of clearance above and below the chassis. If you stack chassis directly on top of each other, the louvers are blocked and the extended temperature rating is void. The EM2 is designed for a 19″ rack with 2U of space above and below (about 3.5 inches total). If your rack is tightly packed, the EM2 will perform like a standard chassis. We’ve seen customers install EM2s in tight racks and wonder why they still overheat—the louvers need room to breathe.

Q: Can I use the EM2 in a -20°C environment (cold storage or outdoor)?

A: Yes. The EM2 is rated down to -20°C ambient. However, at that temperature, the fans may run slowly (stiff grease) and the electrolytic capacitors in the power supply might have reduced capacitance until they warm up. Allow about 30 minutes of runtime before loading the chassis to full capacity. Also, condensation can form if you bring a cold chassis into a warm room—let it acclimate for 2 hours before applying power.

Q: The EM2 has a different filter capacitor rating. Does that affect the power quality?

A: No. The 105°C-rated capacitors are simply more heat-tolerant. They have the same capacitance and the same ESR as the 85°C caps in the standard chassis. The power quality (ripple, regulation, attenuation) is identical. The only difference is that the EM2’s filter will last longer in a hot environment—about 2x the lifespan at 60°C ambient.

Q: Can I buy just the EM2 fans to upgrade a standard chassis?

A: Yes, the 95 CFM fans are available as a separate part. However, upgrading a standard chassis with EM2 fans doesn’t make it a full EM2. You’d still have the 85°C-rated filter capacitors and the standard ventilation louvers. The chassis’s temperature rating would improve slightly (maybe 3-5°C), but it wouldn’t reach the full 65°C rating. If you need 65°C capability, buy the EM2 chassis. If you just want more airflow in a 50°C cabinet, the fan upgrade is a good option.

Q: The EM2 has “push-pull” airflow. What does that mean?

A: One fan is an intake (pulls air in) and the other is an exhaust (pushes air out). This configuration creates a positive pressure inside the chassis, which helps prevent dust from entering through the ventilation louvers. The intake fan has a dust filter on the outside (removable). The exhaust fan does not. If your environment is dusty, the intake filter will catch most of it. Clean the filter monthly.

Q: Is there a DC-input version of the EM2?

A: No. GE never produced an extended-temperature DC-input chassis. The EM2 is AC-input only. If you need DC input and extended temperature, you’d have to use the ADM chassis (rated to 50°C) and add external cooling to bring the cabinet temperature down to 50°C.

Q: What’s the warranty on the extended-temperature capacitors?

A: The 105°C caps on the EM2 are rated for 10,000 hours at 105°C. At 65°C ambient (the chassis’s maximum rating), the caps last about 50,000 hours (roughly 5.7 years of continuous operation). At 55°C, they last about 100,000 hours (11 years). The EM2 is designed to be field-repairable—the filter module can be replaced, and the capacitors on the backplane are accessible if needed.

Q: Can I use the EM2 with 480V AC input?

A: No. The EM2 is rated for 120V or 240V AC input (single-phase). The AC input filter and the power supply bay are designed for those voltages. 480V is three-phase and would destroy the filter and power supply. If your plant is 480V, you need a step-down transformer (480V to 240V) external to the chassis. That’s a common configuration.

Q: The EM2 has additional louvers. Can I cover them if I’m in a dusty environment?

A: You can, but you’ll lose the extended temperature rating. The louvers are part of the thermal design—they allow hot air to escape from the top and cool air to enter from the bottom. If you cover them, the chassis temperature will rise by about 10°C, which negates the EM2’s benefit. If you’re in a dusty environment, keep the intake filter clean and leave the louvers open.
