This is the chassis for plants with dirty power: welding equipment nearby, large motor starters cycling, or lightning-prone regions. It adds another layer of protection between your incoming AC and your 212-series power supply.
The model number signals a meaningful upgrade: “300CCH” is the standard chassis, and “ABM5” tells you this is the revision with the enhanced filter package. The “B” filter gives you 80dB of attenuation at 150kHz (compared to 60dB on the “A” filter) and adds a 20kA surge protector across the line and neutral. - 531X300CCHABM5 with a 211-series backplane: The chassis comes with a 213-series backplane. A 211-series backplane won’t fit—the screw holes are in different positions. No other backplane fits.
- 531X300CCHABM5 in a rack depth under 15 inches: The chassis is 14.5″ deep with the B filter and the rear shroud. Shallow cabinets (14″ or less) will not accommodate it. Measure your cabinet depth before ordering. If you have a 12″ deep cabinet, you’d need the A filter chassis (CCHAAM5) which is about 13.5″ deep—and even that might be tight.

Q: What’s the difference between the A and B filter versions?
A: The A filter (CCHA) provides 60dB attenuation at 150kHz and basic surge protection (5kA). The B filter (CCHAB) provides 80dB attenuation at 150kHz and 20kA surge protection. The B filter is about 20% larger and adds about 1″ to the chassis depth. If you’re in an area with frequent lightning strikes or you have heavy welding equipment on the same power feed, the B filter is worth the extra space. If your power is clean, the A filter is sufficient. Practically, the B filter is a nice-to-have, not a must-have for most plants.
Q: Does the B filter cause any issues with GFCIs?
A: Yes, it can. The B filter has a leakage current of about 3mA at 230V AC. A typical GFCI trips at 5mA, so the filter alone draws 60% of the trip threshold. If you have any additional leakage from cabling or other equipment, the GFCI may nuisance-trip. The solution is to either (a) use a GFCI with a higher threshold (10mA or 30mA), or (b) use a non-GFCI circuit for the drive. Many industrial installations use 30mA GFCIs for this reason. Check your local electrical code before making a decision.
Q: The B filter has a surge protector. How do I know if it’s been triggered?
A: The surge protector is a metal-oxide varistor (MOV) across the line and neutral. It doesn’t have a status indicator. If a large surge hits, the MOV may short out—that will blow the input fuse on the power supply. If you find a blown fuse with no apparent cause, the MOV might have sacrificed itself. We don’t repair filters; we replace them.
Q: Can I bypass the filter if it fails?
A: You can, but it’s not recommended. The filter is part of the chassis; you can’t “bypass” it—you’d have to remove it and wire the AC input directly to the power supply. That’s a modification that voids the chassis’s UL rating and exposes your boards to line noise. If the filter fails, it’s better to replace the entire chassis or swap in a new filter module. We stock replacement B filters separately if you prefer to swap just the filter.
Q: The chassis depth is 14.5″. Is that with or without the rear cable trough?
A: The 14.5″ depth includes the rear cable trough and the filter. The chassis without the trough is 13.5″ deep. The trough adds about 1″ to the overall depth. If you’re tight on space, you can remove the trough (four screws) to reduce the depth to 13.5″. The trough provides strain relief for your cables, so we recommend keeping it if you have the space.
Q: Can I use this chassis with a 24V DC power supply instead of the 212-series PSU?
A: The chassis is designed for the 212-series AC-to-DC power supply. If you want to use a 24V DC external supply, you’d need to bypass the AC input filter and the power supply bay entirely, and wire the 24V directly to the backplane’s 24V rails. That’s a major modification—you’d need to remove the 212-series PSU and fabricate a custom connector for the backplane. We don’t recommend it. The 212-series PSU is the proper power source for this chassis.
Q: The M5 fans are 65 CFM. Is that enough for a fully loaded rack with the B filter?
A: Yes. The B filter adds about 5W of heat dissipation to the chassis (the filter itself gets warm). The M5 fans move 65 CFM each, which is sufficient for the 250W total dissipation of a fully loaded rack. At 40°C ambient, the internal temperature will be about 55°C—within spec for most boards. If you’re in a 50°C ambient, you’ll need to derate or add external cooling.
Q: Does the chassis come with the fan guard grilles?
A: Yes. The M5 revision includes metal fan guard grilles on both fans. They’re powder-coated to match the chassis. The grilles prevent fingers or cables from getting caught in the fans. They’re removable for cleaning.
Q: How do I clean the filter without damaging it?
A: The filter is a sealed module—you don’t clean it. It’s a passive component with no moving parts. If it gets dirty, the chassis is in a dirty environment. The only maintenance on the filter is to check for blown fuses or signs of overheating (discoloration on the potting compound). If the filter looks burnt, replace the chassis or the filter module. There’s no user-serviceable part inside the filter.
Q: Can I rack-mount this chassis with the handles facing forward?
A: The chassis has handles on both the front and rear panels. The rack ears are designed for the front panel to face forward. You can mount it backwards if you want the rear panel accessible, but then the fan grilles would face inward and the air intake would be restricted. We recommend mounting it with the front panel (with the slot labels) facing the front of the rack. That’s the orientation GE designed for.
Q: Is there a version of this chassis with a 24V DC fan instead of 12V?
A: No. The M5 revision uses 12V DC fans. The power supply provides 12V on the backplane specifically for the fans. If you need 24V fans, you’d need to modify the chassis—a non-standard modification. We don’t recommend it. The 12V fans are readily available and have been used in GE chassis for decades. We stock replacements if needed.
