But watch the airflow: the OEM fans move 65 CFM each. A quieter fan might move only 35 CFM, which could be insufficient for a fully loaded rack in a hot cabinet. Q: How do I mount this chassis in a 19″ rack?

A: Yes. The rear trough is held on by four screws. You can remove it if your cabinet has limited depth. However, the trough provides strain relief for your cables—without it, cables can pull on the board connectors and cause intermittent faults. A: Yes. The keying bars are pre-installed in the chassis. They prevent you from inserting a board into the wrong slot (each slot has a unique key pattern). For standard GE boards, the default keying works.
Q: Is there a difference between the M5 and the M3 revision in terms of board compatibility?

A: The chassis is rated for 250W of total heat dissipation (the power supply limit). At 250W, the internal temperature rise is about 25°C above ambient with the fans running. So at 25°C ambient, the internal air is at 50°C, which is within spec for most boards. If you’re running at 40°C ambient, the internal temp hits 65°C—above the derating point for many boards. You’d need to add external cooling in that case. The M5 fans are 65 CFM each, which is sufficient for 250W dissipation at 30°C ambient.
Q: Does the chassis have a ground lug?
A: Yes. There’s an M6 ground stud on the rear panel, near the power supply bay. Connect it to your plant’s grounding bar using #10 AWG green wire. This is required for safety and for EMI performance. The chassis ground is separate from the board grounds.
Q: Can I order this chassis without the backplane?
A: No. The 531X300CCHAAM5 is sold as a complete assembly with the backplane pre-installed. GE didn’t offer a “bare chassis” option.
