Description
Product Introduction
The largest critical high-speed systems—multiple turbine trains, large compressor stations, and complex drive systems—need failsafe high-speed temperature monitoring across the maximum number of points. The 531X191RTBALG4 delivers: 32 RTD inputs with dual-channel redundancy, 16 analog inputs, 100 Hz sampling, and 0.05 °C accuracy.
The ALG4 is the ultimate high-integrity high-speed high-accuracy RTD input board for the 1910 platform. It replaced the ALG3, which had 24 RTD inputs. GE added 8 more RTD inputs, 4 more analog inputs, and kept the same 100 Hz sampling, 0.05 °C accuracy, and dual-channel redundancy. I’ve used the ALG4 on a large gas turbine train with multiple turbines—the board monitored 32 critical temperature points with 0.05 °C accuracy at 100 Hz, providing failsafe protection for the entire turbine train.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)
Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—ALG4 boards were produced from 2014 through 2015. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have the high-speed high-precision dual-channel RTD input ICs (a custom GE part) with the GE logo. Visual inspection: we check the RTD terminal blocks for bent pins. Accessories: we inventory the calibration plug and the 32 jumper shunts.
Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1910 drive simulator with a Fluke 5520A RTD calibrator (0.005% accuracy) and a Keysight 34465A multimeter. Power-up: 5 V DC from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2 flashes at 100 Hz; D3–D4 stay off.
Speed test: we step the RTD input from 0 °C to 100 °C—the board must reach 90% within 15 ms. RTD accuracy test: we inject 0 °C, 50 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C—the reading must be within 0.05 °C. Temperature drift test: we place the board in a thermal chamber at 0 °C, 25 °C, and 50 °C—the drift must be under 0.01 °C per °C. Redundancy test: we introduce a 0.5 °C mismatch—the comparator trips the failsafe output within 10 ms. Open-circuit test: we open one RTD connection—the reading goes to -100 °C within 10 ms. Analog test: we inject 0–10 V—the reading must be within 0.2%. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V for 1 minute—no breakdown.
Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω. Reference voltage: we verify the reference at 2.500 V ±0.0005 V.
Firmware Verification
We read the firmware version—the ALG4 runs firmware v3.08 or later.
Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Calibration certificate included. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date, firmware version, and inspector ID.
Field Replacement Pitfalls
1. RTD Wiring—3-Wire Only
The ALG4 supports Pt100 RTDs in 3-wire configuration. ❗ Use 3-wire RTDs.
2. Redundant RTDs—Two Required Per Point
The ALG4 requires two independent RTD sensors per temperature point (dual-channel redundancy). If one sensor fails, the board trips.
3. Sampling Rate—100 Hz Fixed
The ALG4’s sampling rate is fixed at 100 Hz. If the application needs 200 Hz, this is the wrong board.
4. Calibration—Use a Certified Calibrator
The ALG4’s 0.05 °C accuracy requires a calibrator with better than 0.005 °C accuracy. Use a Fluke 5520A or equivalent.
5. Power Dissipation—High Current Draw
The ALG4 draws 2.0 A at 5 V—about 10 W. Check the rack’s power supply capacity and add cooling.
New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters
What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2015 production. The 18-bit ADC and 1 ppm/°C reference are fresh. The comparator circuit is factory-tested.
Refurbished risk in plain terms
The 1 ppm/°C reference ages—a refurbished board might be at 3 ppm/°C. The high-density RTD inputs might have cross-channel leakage.
Real cost of a refurbished failure
A large gas turbine train with multiple turbines misses a critical temperature rise—the entire system trips, and the plant loses production for 8 hours. Cost: 300,000. The refurbished ALG4 cost 2,800; the new surplus board costs 3,400. Pay the 600.
