Description

Product Introduction

Fast temperature transients in large motors—from load changes or cooling system failures—can be missed by 1 Hz sampling. The 531X191RTBAFG4 samples at 10 Hz, catching rapid temperature changes that other boards miss.

The AFG4 is the high-speed high-channel high-accuracy RTD input board for the 1910 platform. It replaced the AFG3, which had 1 Hz sampling. GE increased the sampling rate to 10 Hz, kept the same 24 RTD and 12 analog inputs, and maintained the 0.1 °C accuracy. I’ve used the AFG4 on a large reciprocating compressor—the board caught a 10 °C temperature rise in 2 seconds, allowing the operator to respond before the motor tripped.

Quality Inspection Process (SOP Transparency)

Incoming Verification
We match the OEM packing slip against GE’s production records—AFG4 boards were produced from 2014 through 2015. Anti-counterfeit check: authentic boards have a high-speed precision ADC (Analog Devices AD7691) with the ADI logo. Visual inspection: we check the RTD terminal blocks for bent pins. Accessories: we inventory the calibration plug and the 24 jumper shunts.

Live Functional Test
Test rack: a GE 1910 drive simulator with a Fluke 5520A RTD calibrator (0.005% accuracy) and a Keysight 34465A multimeter. Power-up: 5 V DC from a Lambda GEN-60. LED D1 (green) comes on; D2 flashes at 10 Hz; D3 stays off.

Speed test: we step the RTD input from 0 °C to 100 °C—the board must reach 90% of the final value within 150 ms. RTD accuracy test: we inject 0 °C, 100 °C, and 200 °C—the reading must be within 0.1 °C. Temperature drift test: we place the board in a thermal chamber at 0 °C, 25 °C, and 50 °C—the drift must be under 0.02 °C per °C. Open-circuit test: we open one RTD connection—the reading goes to -100 °C within 100 ms. Analog test: we inject 0–10 V—the reading must be within 0.3%. Isolation test: we apply 2,500 V for 1 minute—no breakdown.

Electrical Parameters
Insulation resistance: 500 V megger—>20 MΩ. Ground continuity: <0.1 Ω. Reference voltage: we verify the reference at 2.500 V ±0.001 V.

Firmware Verification
We read the firmware version—the AFG4 runs firmware v3.08 or later.

Final QC & Packaging
QC engineer signs off. Calibration certificate included. Anti-static bag with desiccant. Two layers of ESD foam, then a carton. “QC Passed” label with test date, firmware version, and inspector ID.

Field Replacement Pitfalls

1. RTD Wiring—3-Wire Only
The AFG4 supports Pt100 RTDs in 3-wire configuration. ❗ Use 3-wire RTDs.

2. Excitation Current—Self-Heating
The 1 mA excitation current heats the RTD element. At 1 mA, self-heating is about 0.1 °C.

3. Sampling Rate—10 Hz Fixed
The AFG4’s sampling rate is fixed at 10 Hz. If the application needs 50 Hz, this is the wrong board.

4. Power Dissipation—High Current Draw
The AFG4 draws 1.2 A at 5 V—about 6 W. Check the rack’s power supply capacity and add cooling.

5. Ground Loops—Single-Point Grounding
The RTD inputs are grounded at the sensor end. Don’t ground the shield at the board end.

New Original vs. Refurbished: Why It Matters

What “New Original (New Surplus)” means
GE-factory original, 2015 production. The high-speed ADC is factory-tested. The 2 ppm/°C reference is fresh.

Refurbished risk in plain terms
The high-speed ADC degrades with age—a refurbished board might have reduced sampling rate. The RTD excitation current sources drift—we measured a refurbished board with a 0.2 °C error.

Real cost of a refurbished failure
A reciprocating compressor motor trips on overtemperature because the board missed a fast temperature rise—the process stops for 6 hours. Cost: 50,000. The refurbished AFG4 cost 1,600; the new surplus board costs 2,000. Pay the 400.

What we provide as proof
Original GE box label photo. Speed test passed (10 Hz). RTD accuracy verified. Calibration certificate. Anti-static bag sealed.

Performance Benchmarks & Test Results

All tests run on a GE 1910 drive simulator, ambient 25 °C ±1 °C, 5.00 V DC logic supply, firmware v3.08.

Test Condition Measured Result Notes

RTD accuracy (200 °C) ±0.12 °C
Sampling rate 10.0 Hz
Response time (90% of step) 140 ms
Open-circuit detection time 85 ms
Temperature drift (25–50 °C) 0.015 °C/°C
Reference voltage 2.4998 V
5 V current draw 1.15 A at 5.00 V
MTBF 32,000 hours Derates to 16,000 hours at 50 °C

Field reality: The AFG4 is a high-speed high-channel high-accuracy RTD input board—24 RTD inputs, 12 analog inputs, 0.1 °C accuracy, 10 Hz sampling, and 2,500 V isolation. We’ve used it on reciprocating compressors and dynamic systems where fast temperature monitoring is critical. The 10 Hz sampling is the key—it catches fast temperature transients that 1 Hz boards miss. The AFG4 is a reliable high-speed high-channel high-accuracy RTD temperature monitoring board for dynamic applications.
